Dyego Exorcises Exercise! (Formerly Climbs Skyscrapers)

Everybody walks to Mordor, which is really cool, but I don't have much space for walking (and it's too hot most of the year.) What I DO have, indoors thank God, is a staircase! So instead of walking to Mordor, I'm going to climb skyscrapers!

 

I first have to do some maths. First, we get the top 100 buildings in the world here. All sorts of different skyscrapers have all sorts of different numbers of floors, depending on if they are residential, commercial, etc. So regardless of how many floors the building says it has, I'm going to divide height of the building (in feet) by 13 feet as a rough average of feet-per-floor. I have 9 foot ceilings, so going down and back up the stairs equals 18 feet, so a "set" of going up and down is, rounding up, 1.4 floors. The math doesn't 100% check out, but I have to make some standards somewhere, so here's where they are.

 

In short: 1 Set (go down, come back up) = 1.4 floors

 

My  first goal is not on that list of tallest buildings in the world, but a structure I've always wanted to go to the top of: The Seattle Space Needle!

 

So, maths again: Space needle = 605 feet, divided by 13 feet a floor, rounded up = 47 floors.

 

In order to climb to the top of the Space Needle for my first challenge means I'll have to do 34 (rounded up. I always round up) sets, which means 68 times up and down the stairs. I so far have averaged about 15 times up and down so far (7 complete sets per 5 minutes) so it looks like I should climb to the top of the Space Needle in 5 days. I'll be starting my 4 week challenge early, so I hope to have climbed to the top of the Space Needle before I even "officially" start the challenge!

Thanks, Hazard! I thought it would be rather fun. Once I conquer skyscrapers, it's on to mountains! (so few of those down in the Valley of the Sun, have to go north to find them)

 

2017.08.06 Update: Did 10 full sets in 5:23. It was a good day! Almost a third of the way there.

First day of my 4 Week Challenge! I decided that the floors climbed is one case where I will not be rounding up. If I didn't climb the full floor, it doesn't count! It won't matter that much to me in the end, so I don't mind. In any case, here's my update. I broke the halfway mark!

Day 2 of my 4 Week Challenge! Did the same number of sets as yesterday, just a bit slower. But I pushed through the second day blues and completed the five minutes anyway! And it's a good thing I did, because tomorrow I'll be climbing to the top of the Space Needle! Woot!

Had to take a couple of days off to rest my bad knee, but got back to the stairs today.

I climbed to the top of the Space Needle in 21 minutes and 20 seconds! The extra 3 floors were my victory lap around the top.

Finally back to the stairs after my vacation and three not-very-good days in a row afterwards. I really didn't want to do the last set today, but I pushed myself to do it anyway.

Well, it's been exactly one month since I last updated. In the meantime I helped my Grandma move (several weeks of this) and I hurt my foot. So today I decided it was time to get back to my climbing ways, start slowly, and get back in the habit.

So! I figure it would be rude of me to start a new Battle Log for every new type of exercise I try out and accomplish, so instead, Dyego Climbs Skyscrapers! will now include all of my other various efforts at exercise. Climbing Skyscrapers™ Will Return this summer! For now, I'm exorcising my exercise demons!
