C_Q: It's Time To Start Running!

Recommended Posts

By 2017 the world economy has collapsed.
Food, natural resources and oil are in short supply.
A police state, divided into paramilitary zones, rules with an iron hand.
Television is controlled by the state and a sadistic gameshow called "The Running Man" has become the most popular program in history.

No dissent is tolerated and yet a small resistance movement has managed to survive underground.....

IT'S TIME TO START RUNNING!

I have a half marathon in 10 weeks, so I'm currently two weeks into a half marathon training plan. The plan has me running 4-5 times a week, which is taking some getting used to. So I'm gamifying this challenge, and what better theme for a running challenge than the ultimate 80's Arnie movie (this challenge suddenly feels very @DJtrippyT-esque).

Game Rules

Each of my goals has a points value. Every week, I'll face off against a different stalker in the Running Man area and my fate will depend on how many points I've earned during the week

Points allocation:
Running = 5 points
Lifting & Climbing = 3 points each

Grip, Core, Domestic Rangering, Self Care = 2 points each

28+ points: Kill the stalker and escape the game zone unharmed
20-27 points: Injure the stalker and escape the game zone but sustain an minor injury in the process
10-19 points: Get injured by the stalker but narrowly escape the game zone
0-9 points: Get killed by the Stalker. Game Over!

The points are stacked in favor of running so missing even one run a week will result in a poorer result in the area. If I get killed by the stalker, I can respawn once but if I die again it's game over! The game will start when the challenge begins.

Following!  I love this movie; now I have to go see if it's on any of my streaming services.  I always thought that this was one of Hollywood's more successful adaptations of a Stephen King story.

We have a TV station over here that has this, Total Recall and Kindergarden Cop on constant rotation! I've never read the book, but the film is quite a loose adaptation of the novel isn't it?

Loose is one way to put it. About the only thing it has in common is that it is dystopian future game show that involves running away while being hunted. This is one of the few cases where I actually like the movie more than I like the book although I don't really consider them to be the same story. I'm also surprised that there hasn't been an awful remake of The Running Man. I would really hate for it to happen because I don't think you could catch that lightning twice!

I looked up the synopsis of the book after posting and I can see what you mean! It does sound like a good story and probably would work well if they remade it and followed the book more. It wouldn't feel like they were ruining the original movie either. With IT being remade, Den Of Geek are doing look backs on Stephen King adaptations at the moment. Here's their look back on The Running Man if your like that sort of thing.

Yes, and I think that's what makes it a successful adaptation -  they didn't try to do the book as written.  King's work just doesn't translate.  Although I've always wanted someone to make Eyes of the Dragon, which was the first one I ever read.

I agree that King's stuff doesn't translate well to the movies. Although there are some adaptations I really do enjoy, the very best are the ones that are based on his shorter work and that have been elaborated for the visual medium.

I've not read many of King's books actually. The ones I have read were read when I was a teen. Maybe I need to re-read them as an adult.

You could probably say the for Phillip K Dick stories. The adaptations that are the most successful are ones that don't stick to the original story. I do have a soft-spot for Screamers even though the ending was pretty terrible, as Second Variety is one of my favorite PDK stories.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday should have been squat and OHP day, but I got back from my CBT session feeling wiped so I skipped it. I had to go food shopping anyway so at least that was a reasonable excuse to not lift and I didn't just end up slumped on the couch.

Random CBT thoughts below

Spoiler

So far I'm finding the sessions frustrating as it doesn't feel like anything is actually happening except me getting more anxious! I did say this to the counselor and I was very honest with her in saying that I felt like she was expecting me to give specific answers that I just didn't have. Her response put my mind at rest on this and so I didn't focus on it so much afterwards, but the session did leave me feeling emotionally drained.

I'm a little anxious at the moment as I have a party this weekend that I'm stressing about. It's a Murder Mystery night at a hotel. So we have dinner and the murder mystery happens around us. I know, this sounds great, but there are 2 things about the night that are stressing me out. The first is the word "interactive" on the information email that came though after we booked it. I hate things where you are forced to participate, so if any of the actors come up to our table and try to get me involved, I'm probably going to crawl under the table and refuse to come out!

The second thing is the period dress that we weren't told about by the person who's birthday it is until after it was booked! It's 1920's glamour - so flappers and dappers, Gatsby type thing. I like a bit of cosplay, but this is way out of my comfort zone. The dresses of that period really don't suit me and I'm never really comfortable in a dress. I'm also having to spend ages looking up YouTube tutorials on how to do posh hair and make up techniques, because I am a completely useless girl who knows nothing about this sort of thing! Seriously, how do other girls know this kind of thing?  Does it come naturally to them? Was I sick the day in Learn To Be A Girl school when they taught this stuff? Or does every other girl stress about it too and they are just really good at hiding it? I think it's going to take a lot of gin to get me through this weekend!

Thank Wolfie. I'm not worried that I won't look authentic, more that I literally don't know how to do anything with my hair other than the one style I rock daily! The one positive is that I have a hair cut in the afternoon before we leave, so I may be able to get the stylist to show me how to do something with it.

Your OCR analogy reminds me, I must remember to wear tights that night. Bruised up legs don't really go with 1920's glamour! :D

I actually did use that article for ideas!

I was going to do this! But then I got worried because of the "glamour" part (the setting is a fashion show), so everyone else would be dolled up and I'd look like the odd one out. I'm not confident enough to be the one person going against the system! At least '20's fashion includes shawls, so that's something else to hide under!

Ugh, fair enough. I'd do exactly the same thing in your shoes. It's a shame you don't have one of the flapper dresses from BoL, that'd be job done. Just try and have fun, or drink enough gin until it becomes fun!

That's so weird! There really are no excuses now, watch it ASAP!

Weird....or fate? Or coincidence? Or ALL OF THEM...?? :P I shall go watch Running Man...more than likely I'll find it and watch it this evening  :)

That's a solid idea to see if the stylist can show you any tips and tricks for the party.

This style resembles yours a little bit so maybe just get your make-up on point and you're golden. Also...I'm not very good at applying my own makeup so any advice I give you would be shit, lol. I'm glad the article helped!! And if you can find one of these larger flowery headbands, I say that's almost a 1920's staple and would set the whole outfit off ;)

Is it fair to say that after this discussion that we'll get some pics of you all dolled up? Leggings FTW!! Though, bruised legs is a great convo starter to let all the other girls know how badass you are and that you like to get dirty ;)

Know, O prince, that once the sun burns out and the earth's core becomes solid and cold, there will come a man to provide the endless energy needed to sustain life and for the planets to keep moving. He is the source of light and the warmth of hope back into the hearts of humanity...." - Dark_Raider
