First things first: Soulcon will continue for the next two weeks, as will my training for the Spartan race. This challenge is not meant as a replacement, but rather a supplement in some cases and a renovation in others.

This post is inspired by this quote: "You want to improve your mental toughness? Try this: Be tougher." The construction of the challenge is based on a post by SealGrinder PT titled "10 Tips to Increase Mental Toughness."

So, without further explanation, let's do this!

pastpresentfuture.jpg

1. Focus on the Present

  • Be mindful of where you are and what you're doing right now.
  • Focus on taking the next step and the next step and the next step.
  • Make small present decisions that take you closer to your bigger goal.
  • Don't stress about the future or moan about the past; be here now and do what you can right now (even if that doesn't seem like much).
  • If you find yourself "lost" in the chaos, pause, take a deep breath, and focus your mind on the present.

2. Have a Short Memory

  • Don't dwell on past mistakes; learn from them and move on.
  • Forgive yourself and forgive others equally.
  • Don't hold on to past hurts either inflicted upon or inflicted by you; learn from them and move on.

3. Stay Positive

  • Take control of a tough situation by driving out negative thoughts reinforcing the positive.
  • Laugh out loud even when you don't feel like it; as a bonus, make someone else laugh and join them.
  • Watch a positive motivational video/movie.
  • Listen to uplifting music, something that reminds you to stay focused and not quit.
  • Read articles/stories about people overcoming negative situations by staying positive.

4. Become a Ritual-aholic

  • Be faithful to your morning routine:
    • 4:45 am wakeup (or earlier)
    • Prayer/Bible reading/quiet time with God -- There is no compromise with this; it is THE most important thing on this list.
    • Take Minnie outside
    • Pushups or burpees (at least 30)
    • Cold shower
    • Brush teeth
    • Get dressed
    • Make bed
    • Drink a tall glass of water
  • Evening Routine (to be modified later)
    • Write down at least 3 things from the day for which you are grateful.
    • No cell phone/iPad/Macbook after 9:30 pm.
    • Read every night.
    • Brush teeth
    • In bed by 10:30 pm with almost no exceptions (work, time with family, etc.)

5. Enjoy the Battle

  • Find joy in the struggle. Like this:

  • If you have to, tell yourself you are enjoying the struggle and force yourself to smile or laugh even as you sweat and grunt and push through your challenges.
  • Listen to music that gets you fired up and helps push you along (see "Stay Positive" suggestions).

6. Visualize your Future Self

  • Similar to Steve Kamb's Level 50 idea, imagine the self you want to be after this challenge.
  • Create a full mental picture as detailed as possible, a full "character study" (physical, emotional, psychological, behavioral).
  • Role play as your future self while completing your challenges, even if you aren't yet able to achieve all that you want your future self to achieve.

7. Hang Around Winners

  • Spend time with people (irl more than online) who are either at or above the level you want to be; this includes both physical ability and spiritual walk
  • Have mentors: men who are more mature and experienced with life's challenges; utilize these men as often as possible by asking questions and spending time with them to watch and learn how they navigate the trials of life.

8. Repeat Affirmations

  • Memorize Bible verses that serve as promises and affirmations from God.
  • Repeat positive affirmations in your mind or out loud that help you focus your heart or mind.
    • Abba, I belong to you.
    • I am a warrior, not a quitter.
    • I am stronger than I know.
    • I am the one Jesus loves.
    • I am an adopted son of God, brother of Jesus, husband and father, teacher, friend, and mentor.
    • I will do this.
    • What we do in life echoes in eternity.
    • When trouble smiles, I smile back.
  • Read and memorize quotes by men who have come before you and overcome challenges and adversity

9. Read Good Books

  • Read at least 10 pages total every day.
  • Choose books that contain and/or teach examples of mental toughness, either fictional or real.
  • Examples:
    • Extreme Ownership -- Jocko Willink
    • Fearless -- Eric Blehm
    • The Way of the Seal and/or Unbeatable Mind -- Mark Divine
    • Spartan Up! -- Joe De Sena
    • Matterhorn -- Karl Marlantes
    • Unbroken -- Laura Hillenbrand
    • Don't Sweat the Small Stuff -- Richard Carlson
    • A Thousand Splendid Suns -- Khaled Hosseini

10. Calm Yourself

  • Meditate daily using the Insight Timer app.
  • Practice breathing techniques (WHM, box breathing, etc.)
  • Incorporate yoga and stretching into your day.
  • Do at least one thing every day that brings you joy: sprint across the field, take a barefoot walk, go for a swim, hike deep into the woods and soak it up, sit in silence and do nothing.

This is an excellent supplement to what I posted above:

Jocko Willink's Leadership Rules

1. Lead, but be ready to follow. -- It is sometimes necessary to set aside ego and consider subordinate's insight.

2. Be aggressive but not overbearing. -- Have a powerful presence and don't tolerate laziness, but ensure your team is comfortable approaching you.

3. Be calm but not robotic. -- People lose respect for leaders who lack control of their emotions yet grow closer when leaders display anger, sadness, and frustration when appropriate.

4. Be confident but never cocky. -- Confident leaders inspire confidence in their team. Cocky leaders become dangerously complacent and arrogant.

5. Be brave but not foolhardy. -- Great leaders don't waste time excessively contemplating a decision yet work to mitigate risk before issuing an order.

6. Have a competitive spirit, but be a gracious leader. -- It's necessary to drive your team to victory while still taking ownership of failure.

7. Be attentive to details but not obsessed with them. -- Great leaders determine what needs monitoring without losing track of the bigger picture.

8. Be strong but have endurance. -- Leaders need to push themselves and their teams but know their physical and mental limits.

9. Be humble but not passive. -- The best leaders keep their egos in check but stand up for their team when an order threatens their success.

10. Be close to subordinates but not too close. -- Effective leaders know what motivates each team member and develop kinship without playing favorites or tolerating casual disrespect.

11. Exercise 'Extreme Ownership' but employ 'Decentralized Command.' -- The best leaders take responsibility for all of their team's actions yet avoid micromanagement by trusting their team.

12. Have nothing to prove but everything to prove. -- The team knows that the leader is the de facto person in charge, but the leader must must establish trust and confidence in every team member.

I love how each one of these is a dichotomy. In fact, Jocko frequently uses the expression "the dichotomy of leadership." I love how, in spite of his hardcore military background, Jocko's philosophies of leadership encourage humility and taking responsibility.

I had an opportunity to exhibit "extreme ownership" today, in fact.

Today was my first day back to work as a teacher since May. Right away, I discovered that some very important folders were missing. These folders contained vital information regarding several of my students (transcripts, contact information, class schedules, etc.) I was certain I had either left them on my desk or placed them in the file cabinet where the other student files are kept. But they were nowhere to be found. At first, I wanted to come unglued, to get angry with myself. Instead, I took a walk across campus to think and pray. I thanked God for this challenge, for the opportunity to learn whatever it was He wanted me to learn from it. Then I had a thought that this is just an inconvenience. It's bad, yes, but no one died or is going to die as a result of it, I am not going to be fired, and the information in the folders can be acquired again.

I walked back up to the office to speak with my supervisor (who was already aware that I had lost the folders). One of my coworkers suggested maybe since I left them on the edge of the desk, maybe they fell off next to the trash can and the custodians assumed they were trash. Part of me wanted to say Yeah! So it's the custodians fault! But again, I breathed and remembered what I had learned from reading Extreme Ownership. Placing blame wouldn't bring the folders back. And it wouldn't humble me enough to take responsibility. The fact is I should have put them back in the file cabinet.

I walked to my supervisor's office and offered to do the leg work, making phone calls and sending emails to acquire the information that was contained in the folders. To my surprise he was understanding and said that the counselor could get most of the information but that I would need to acquire some of it from the students when they return. Which mean once again that I would have to own up to my mistake, humble myself and admit to those students that I had lost their folder.

So that's it. I'm grateful for the opportunity to put into practice something I have learned. I didn't mope. I didn't complain. I just owned up and said, "Yep. I messed this up. I will fix it." And my supervisor wasn't angry or even disappointed. He just offered to help. He even helped me look for the folders.

Which means he's also a good leader.

Watch this video and think about the following:

  1. What did you learn from this video?
  2. Use at least three adjectives to describe this presentation.
  3. Did any part of this video resonate with you or cause any kind of emotional response? If so, what was it? If not, why not?
  4. If you could as Dr. Richardson any question after viewing this video, what would it be?

Be-The-Type-of-Person-Dwayne-Johnson-Quote.jpg

  • Lord's Prayer
  • Took Minnie for a brief barefoot walk
  • Did pushups to muscle failure: 28 total
  • Sat on the front porch for quiet time with God.

  • Read Soulcon devotional
  • Also did my own devotional using the SPACE model; this method for reading the Bible and spending time with God was suggested by my friend and founder of Real Men Connect, Joe Martin. Basically, you choose a passage of scripture based on a personal need, some area you know God wants you to grow or learn more about or an area with which you struggle. According to the site: ...simply open your Bible to the scripture (chapter) of your choice, and simply start reading. As you read, keep thinking about the SPACE acronym:

S = “Does this scripture/passage reveal any SIN in my life that I need to confess?”
P = “Is there a PROMISE in this scripture/passage I need to claim as my own?”
A = “Does this scripture/passage expose an ATTITUDE I need to change or modify?”
C = “Does this scripture/passage focus on a particular COMMAND (from God) I need to obey?”
E = “Is there an EXAMPLE in this scripture/passage I need to follow/model (or even avoid)?”

Joe encouraged me to journal my responses to these questions and even directed me to a graphic organizer on the website to help me. It's really cool because the method encourages you to respond in prayer as if you are speaking to God and He is responding through His Word. But does it work? Yes, absolutely. While reading a section in the book of James, I got to the P in SPACE and asked out loud: "God, what promise in this scripture do you want me to know and claim as mine?" Literally: "God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has PROMISED to those who love him." James 1:12

  • Took a cold shower. One of the things I love about cold showers is that it makes you mindful of feeling; warm showers/baths relax you and make you feel kind of numb, whereas cold showers perk you up and make you more alert and more aware.
  • Could not make the bed because my daughter wanted to sleep in it after Mommy and Daddy left for work (my oldest is babysitting).
  • Work today was a little less stressful. Well...sort of. One of my coworkers passed out and had a seizure in the bathroom. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I'm deeply concerned about her. I'm not familiar with all of her medical problems because even though she is a very sweet lady, funny and energetic, she's also very private about certain things, especially her health problems. And there are obvious problems. She is overweight (although she has lost over 60 pounds since last year), walks as if she has bad knees, and has an obvious imprint of what looks like the strap of a breathing mask (sleep apnea?). And of course there's the passing out and the seizures. She is also diabetic and sometimes doesn't eat (which was the case this morning).I don't know what to think other than that I'm really worried about her. My mind can only make assumptions, though, about what she should do next. But that doesn't seem right, either. I'm not her doctor. I'm not her. Only she knows what needs to be done to get better.
  • I never found those folders. Our school counselor and my supervisor are both being very gracious in helping me compile new copies of the missing papers; as I said before, I will be required to humble myself further tomorrow when I confess to the students that I lost their folders.
  • Today I am grateful for people who let you merge in traffic, excellent audiobooks (Same Kind of Different as Me), and still having energy even after being awake for almost 16 hours.

104189._UY500_SS500_.jpg

  • Planning to read more of Fearless before bed.
  • Also planning some meditation time, some deep breathing with the "Abba, I belong to you" mantra.
  • Have to get to bed early; my daughter works until 2:00 am and I have to be at work in the morning. Probably not getting up the same time as The Rock this time.

WARNING: I'm in teacher mode. ;)

Took me a while to find time to watch it, and I'm not going to do your assignment in the strict sense (I'm a true Rebel B)) but I found it thought-provoking and wanted to thank you for sharing it.

One part that really resonated with me is the reference to the medical system and its bias for intervention, even when the intervention is dangerous and has an uncertain chance of helping, because of the human need to do something, anything, in the face of danger and fear. My father-in-law died in December of metastatic colon cancer that spread to his liver, lungs, spine, brain, and lymphatic system. He was given six to eighteen months at diagnosis but endured eight years of treatment before he died. The people at the hospital called him the "miracle man" and treated him like a success story. And in some ways they were right: he lived to see his daughter married and his first grandchild born. He was there for his granddaughter's first birthday. He kept working, whenever not recovering from surgery, until six weeks before his death. He made conference calls from the hospital more than once. Those things were important to him and he was willing to endure whatever it took. And he endured a lot. Nine surgeries, and more rounds of chemo and radiation than I can even count, and then a collection of experimental treatments that in some cases had horrific side effects. Constant pain and nausea, fear and uncertainty, and gradual loss of ability. I reflected many times on the question of whether or not the cost was worth those extra years of life. In his position, I am not sure I would have made the same choices. As a society, I am not sure our approach to those choices makes sense. Sometimes I think the better answer is to accept that we don't know what to do, and accepting that with humility and grace and making peace with our mortality is a healthier, saner, more compassionate response than trying something for the sake of giving ourselves a false sense of control.

I grapple with anxiety and one of my most treasured goals is to increase my resilience, emotional regulation, and ability to choose my actions logically based on my values and goals rather than to feel swept along by overwhelming compulsions of fear or anxiety. A lot of what Dr. Richardson spoke about tied into that. And while this is a topic where it's easy to watch inspiring videos and talk about strategies and much harder to actually make those changes and choices in the moment of fear and stress, nevertheless I believe that having these conversations, listening to these ideas, and asking ourselves these questions helps us imagine a different response and make progress toward change. In fact some of this ties in to my current challenge and the things I admire about my grandmother (who is its inspiration).

Yesssss! We need to be having these conversations. Medication isn't always the answer, and sometimes it's the curse. Treatments exist beyond medication. It baffles me how few doctors are interested in looking at a patient's nutritional habits. Like it doesn't matter what you eat? Of course it does! It's almost like many of them don't want to talk about anything beyond the easy answer because the right answer might be too difficult (or in some cases too expensive).

Ahh I really really like your challenge about positivity! I think it's so important sometimes to be ambitious yes, but also to accept what is right now, embrace it and find the positive stuff. People can't live in the past like you say, and also (my problem) not live in the future (I want so many things).

Definitely following!

Update:

  • First awesome: My grandpa is coming home Monday! He has been in a nursing home for physical therapy, but we were concerned that his care needs would be so extensive that a longer-term stay would be the best option. I spoke with my mother yesterday and she told me he would be home Monday!
  • Second awesome: I found the missing folders! As it turns out, I'm an idiot. The manilla folders are kept in a file cabinet and placed inside hanging folders like this:

30216686.jpg

Well, apparently my brain either thought they were just dividers, or I thought I was placing the folders inside but was instead sliding them between. So over time my folders must have slid under to the bottom of the drawer, because that's where they all were. Duh. Apparently, God felt I needed to be humbled early in the school year.

  • Third awesome: I took my little one with me to my mentor's chicken coop yesterday. She asked so many questions about why the chickens had to be in the coop, why the coop was so dirty, if she could hold the chickens. My heart was melting.
  • Fourth awesome: It rained hard yesterday morning, and I debated postponing my usual walk across campus to sit on the porch of East Hall. But like a fool I remembered that there is this cool invention called an umbrella. So I finished brewing my coffee, poured a cup, and walked across campus.

15876497241_32e3e7c3e6_b.jpg

The bench on the left side of the porch is my spot. Great place to sit quietly and collect my thoughts before the day begins.

East Hall was built in 1895 and started out as a boy's dormitory for the college. There are offices located there now. I wish I had a photo of it when the lights on the porch are lit. It's like hanging out on the porch of history.

  • Fifth awesome: The rain stopped and the sky cleared before late afternoon, so my drive to Parent Orientation for our program was gorgeous, with golden sunlight decorating everything.
  • Sixth awesome: I had to pick my oldest daughter up from band practice and arrived early. There were some wild apples growing from a nearby tree and I picked a few. They were tart and juicy; I picked one for Arabella and she wanted more.
  • Seventh awesome. I was in bed by 10:00pm and very much ready for sleep; my wife and I talked for a little bit until she put her hand in mine, and we were soon out cold.
