I'm working as a course marshall for the Spartan race in Glen Jean, WV on Sunday, August 27th. I will also be running the Sprint at 3 pm the same day. Am I nuts? I have to be there at 5:30am Sunday morning (little over 90 minute drive for me, so I'll need to leave around 3:30-3:45) and work until 2. No, I'm not nuts. That's so exciting! I'm so happy for you. Also, your file folder story was like a dual inspiration about how even if you can blame someone else that doesn't change anything (really made me think about my own work life and blame placement) and to look in the second most obvious place, even if it doesn't seem like the second most obvious place. Always welcome. I have two stories to share. I have been trying to register to start a Master's degree program, but some hiccups with my financial aid stretched this process out almost two weeks. Hours spent on the phone, listening to hold music, trying to explain my situation to people I've never met, nearly losing my temper. My advisor did everything she could on her end, making calls and sending emails. Needless to say, my temper was flaring yesterday and I snapped at my wife when she questioned my efforts to solve this problem. My wife and I have been happily married for 17 years. She promised to speak with one of the financial aid counselors and get my problem resolved. She said, "You will hear from me before 5:00 today. We are going to figure this out." We. Not You, but We, as in she was going to do what she could to help me solve this problem. Every other person I had spoken with had repeated the problem to me and told me what I needed to do to solve it. I watched the clock and said more than a few prayers to God. Then I felt in my heart that God was asking me to trust Him. I sighed, and around 4:50 my phone rang. Problem solved. I am now enrolled at Marshall University Graduate School. Later in the day, I decided to take a quick swim in the river. It had been raining off and on that afternoon, but now it had settled. As I stepped into the river, though, a slow downpour began. It was magnificent. I swam on my back and listened to the drops fall all around me. I praised God and gave Him glory for this beauty. At one point the sun shone through the clouds enough that I could clearly see the rainfall up in the sky above me, the drops glinting in the sunlight. I laughed, I cried out in glory to God, and finished my swim across the river and back. Then (and I'm not making this up) as soon as I stepped out of the river the rain stopped. I gave God praise again as I walked back home and the sky started to clear away enough to see a beautiful sunset. Then, while running my test-out 5k this morning, I was close to quitting about a mile before the end when I heard an owl hoot "Whooo?" Still running, I listened, not sure if I had really heard it. Then it came again. "Whooo?" So I answered. "Jason Louis Lilly, adopted son of the One True God, beloved brother and friend of King Jesus, proud husband to Jennifer, father to Arabella, Gracelynn, Bianca, and Aryanna, warrior and servant, and I will not stop!" I didn't stop, and my finish time was 30:30. My test-in time was 35:27. I also didn't hear from the owl again. Here are my final Soulcon numbers: Age: 37 Height: 5'10.5" Weight: 176 Pushups: Test-in -- 20 Test-out -- 31 Sit-ups: Test-in -- 37 Test-out -- 37 5K: Test-in -- 35:27 Test-out -- 30:30 I have already joined up with another Soulcon tour, Team India. It begins September 11th. Yesterday, while millions of people were watching the eclipse, I watched a red-shouldered hawk fly slowly across the sky over the Walmart parking lot. No one else saw him because they were either walking in and out of the store, eyes downcast to resist the urge to look at the sun, or they were staring up at the sun through dark lenses to see the eclipse. I watched the hawk for a few minutes, his wings spread wide, not flapping them even once, until he disappeared over the hill. I was reminded of the story in the Bible when Elijah sees a furious windstorm, an earthquake, and a fire, but God was not in any of them. But then there was a gentle whisper. “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper." -- 1 Kings 19:11-12 You can't be amazed by what you consider big miracles or spectacles of God and not be equally amazed by the glory of God we see every day and often take for granted. This kind of sportsmanship and integrity is just incredible. Imagine the mental toughness required to find a cell phone after a chaotic event such as the Spartan and think I'm going to hold on to this because someone is going to be looking for it. A lot of people would be more likely to think Well, that person's long gone and without a phone. Plop! in the trash, or taken to Lost and Found and out of their hands. But these guys, probably exhausted from a hard day of racing, held onto the phone. I'd like to think the men, in spite of their exhaustion, wondered how they would feel it they lost their own phone; they would have appreciated someone who held onto it in hopes that the owner would call it soon.
