MaylaKae is a Renaissance Woman

I dove in head first. I found an awesome gym; an awesome coach. This meet is starting to feel real. I'm not showing up expecting to win with 9 months of lifting under my belt. But I am expecting—between now and my last deadlift of the day on 11/5—to continuously surprise myself. I'm listening to the new Kesha album as I write this, and her first track has these lyrics:

Been underestimated
My entire life
I know people gonna talk shit
And darling, that's fine
But they won't break my spirit
I won't let 'em win
I'll just keep on living
The way I wanna live

Powerlifting is not just a sport for me, but a physical ritual and (almost?) spiritual practice. I am not a super spiritual person, so I hesitate to say that. But training consistently and treating my body with respect is possibly the closest thing to religion I've got. I am done underestimating myself. Making myself smaller. Hesitating. Doubting. Powerlifting allows for me to access these parts of myself, and I can take it with me to other parts of my life.

Anyway.

My goal for this challenge is simple:

Eat to support the gainz. Stop cannibalizing muscle.

Since I joined NF, I've leaned out quite a bit (30% body fat to 22%). My weight has been hanging steady for awhile, but I lost a lot over the past few weeks with my new training program. I need to fuel to support the work. And I want to fill out the top end of my weight class.

For this, I've enlisted the help of Renaissance Periodization. It is essentially macros plus easy meal planning plus timing. It takes as much decision fatigue out of eating as possible. I'm doing a "soft launch" today and tomorrow and going full RP on Sunday. I expect to gain 0.5-1 pound a week.

It's a beautiful thing when the switch flips and we find a place of healthy self love :D

RP has proven successful for many,  I hope you have a good experience with it! Are you part of the Grrrl army perchance? I feel like it would be a welcome community for you. I can add you on FB if you like :)

Whoa whoa whoa. Coming up for air! This challenge has flown by me.

I'm sorry I don't have the time for funny gifs, but I do want to give y'all an update on RP, training, and life in general (and make the rounds to see how y'all are doing.)

1. I am progressing consistently and learning a lot. I think working with a coach is important for me because I wasn't pushing myself hard enough. I tend to underestimate my capabilities and hesitate to go for that last rep. Working with someone that can encourage me to safely go where I didn't think was possible has exponentially improved my process.

2. Shit's getting really personal. I am investing a lot of time and energy into training and my nutrition. I have never focused on myself this much. I have Mr. Z's support, but I still sometimes feel like I don't deserve it or I won't be good enough anyway, so why waste the energy and resources? Challenging myself physically is bringing up a lot of emotional challenges and negative self-talk. I have been treating myself like garbage since puberty and I am finally hearing myself--and witnessing how it has held me back my whole life. Awareness is the first step, and I am starting to believe I can be the person I want to be (as an athlete, partner, friend, artist, etc.)--at least on most days.

3. Nutrition is so important. I love RP because it simplifies things. I have gained the weight I lost since working with my coach 5 weeks ago, and I expect that this trend will continue (on average about .5-1lbs/week, which is right on track.) It hasn't been super disruptive or prevented me from doing things with friends. I just need to make sure I eat before I go somewhere with friends and/or bring food with me. I bought some bento boxes off Amazon, and they are a GAMECHANGER.

4. I've started to take creatine. I am on day 3 of my load phase (15g/day), and I haven't noticed any bloating. I am thirstier, which is to be expected. Always drink more water when using creatine. I had a great bench workout yesterday, but it is hard to say if creatine helped. Probably not. It is more effective over the long term, and it takes at least a few days for your muscles to absorb enough to respond. I am attributing my success over the last few weeks to solid, consistent nutrition and putting in the work.

5. I got a new freelance client, and I have decided to start looking for more. If y'all know anyone that needs a digital marketing specialist or marketing analyst, let me know. I am in the market. :-)

Awesome update! Heck yeah on the freelance, I have a dream that I do that but have no idea how to find clients. VERY cool!

Re creatine, my lifts went up a ton after I started taking it & yoga-ing - I assume because of the recovery. Yay! I may or may not weigh a couple of lbs more when I take it but not noticeable to my eyes.

Love that you're treating yourself well and working through it. Lifting heavy brought (and still does) bring up some heavy feels for me, too. I am so glad you are at your gym - I can't believe how much less I do even when my coach is on vacation. Too funny.

That's awesome and very true! I think people definitely underestimate themselves and having a coach (and a bench spotter!) helps us to push ourselves appropriately. I'm excited to see how you progress and how the rest of the year plays out for you. Also, I enjoy your IG updates and appreciate your words of truth.

YOU ARE WORTH IT. You are in the best position to be an advocate for others when you take care of yourself. You are a phenomenal woman and you deserve self-care.
