Shotokan
The flow state on Thursday didn't flow into Friday. On Day 20, only one Shotokan and one Iaido kata. Day 21: Single leg raise 10 each leg Front snap kicks 6 each leg Fire hydrants 10 each leg Side thrust kicks 6 each leg Donkey kick 10 each leg Back kick 6 each leg Glute bridge with band 10 Side snap kick 6 each leg Swissball squeeze 12 Roundhouse kick 6 each leg Medicine ball scissor 10 x 12lbs - back to the medicine ball but a heavier one than before. I added the an extra kick to each set today. I finished up with one each of a Shotokan and Iaido kata. This weeks recap: Only one inhumane burpee, two of my kicking workouts and at least 35 katas. I was really fighting with low energy and mental drain this past week. Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Student of Karate and Iaido Link to comment
Kishi
But you did fight them, and that's worth something. 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment
Shotokan
Day 22: Ugh, not a good day. Went from almost chills to hot and sweaty. I was able to get in five Shotokan katas and one Iaido kata. Tomorrow will be better, right? 1 Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Kishi
Hopefully so! Get some rest and drink lots of water. 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment
Shotokan
This week isn't going as planned. Just a few katas each day and some teaching last night. Too much time working and no time for working is not making me happy. Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Student of Karate and Iaido Link to comment
Kishi
Well, this happens sometimes. That's life happening to you. But you're rolling with it, you know? You're still getting something to happen, still touching base with it. That's part of the beauty of martial arts is that you get to keep showing up and that there's so much you can do and take benefit from. This busyness will pass, and when it does you'll be in a far better position to ramp the intensity than you otherwise would have been. 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Shotokan
Today went better than the past few. I am having some issues with my muscles which I believe is related to not seeing my chiropractor since they changed the hours that they are in the office only one day a week. It's too bad because they really did a good job adjusting me and I know that I am out of whack right now. I am in the process of finding another one that will hopefully work but know I have to train them on what I need fixed. It's hard to explain that what I want to do with my body at 50+ years of age to most chiropractors. I had to pull out Pavel to get my body moving well enough to get in some good katas. I ended up doing his Super Joints routine and followed that up with 10 Shotokan katas along with two Iaido katas. It wasn't a spectacular workout but it was good none the less. Kishi
I mean, it's not really about spectacular training, right? Most of the effective stuff, it seems, is about showing up, putting in work that's as good as you can manage, and going home. People treat "good enough" as a minimum, but really, what if that was all we actually needed? A maximum, with anything beyond that as a bonus? From that perspective I'd say that the work you did was fantastic, and that you're in a position to do it again, which is even better. So, cool! 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment
Shotokan
Another long day today with work and going to an open house at the garage where my son just started working took most of the day but training must go on. I am really tight in my right knee and hips today but a little sweat got them moving. I have to teach Karate classes tomorrow and next week and I always try to find some interesting things for the advanced class to work on when I am there. Because of this, I spent my little time training doing kata and I ended up with 10 Shotokan katas. Eight of them were the same kata, Wankan, because I want to teach it to the advanced class tomorrow. It's a very short kata that is made of up a basic movements and stances but from what I am told, it is extremely technical. I am not sure why it is said to be so technical because all the stances and techniques are pretty basic but I will see how hard it is for everyone else when I teach it tomorrow. I was hoping to do some Pavel work again today but there are not enough hours before I have to be awake to go teach. 1 Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Shotokan
Last day of challenge went pretty well overall. Lots of kata today before teaching and during. I got in at least 10 katas and they all felt pretty good even though I was really sore today. The challenge overall didn't go as planned but I ended up getting in enough kata to satisfy me. I have more work to do and I need to get my body working right again. I am going to spend the week in between the challenges to work on mobility training. I am also going to visit a new chiropractor on Wednesday to see if he can tell me what's going on. I learned some good things from this challenge and might have to plan for some active rest days since I seemed to burn out after about two and half weeks into the challenge. 1 Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Kishi
Yeah, man. Rest needs to be a part of the things you do. Training is when you induce your adaptations, but rest is when they actually happen. I hope you get it figured out! Is there any way that you might consider kata to be active rest? 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment

I tried to use kata as active rest before but even when I do it slowly, I end up getting my heart rate up almost as high as doing the inhumane burpee circuits. I was thinking about using the mobility drills for active rest? 1 Quote Doug In search of the ever elusive side thrust kick.... Student of Karate and Iaido Link to comment

You gotta figure out what works and then do the work. 1 Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment
