Last time I tried a complicated points based challenge and I struggled to keep up with it. So I'm keeping this challenge nice and simple, with a bit of stupid thrown in for good measure.

The next few weeks are going to be a little crazy, with a few races and two weekends away. So I've worked out the amount of runs and strength workouts I can realistically do throughout the next 5 weeks.

Runs: 19

This includes all races I'm running, except one OCR that I'm doing while I'm away, as it's just a 5km inflatable obstacle course that we're doing for my soon to be sister-in-laws hen weekend and there won't be that much running involved. The first weekend away I'll only be missing one long run but the second I'll be missing one 3 mile run and one long run. The bad thing is, that long run is the last one before my half marathon! Eeek!

Strength: 10

This averages about 2 sessions a week. That's a little less than I'd like but it's probably all I'll fit in with everything else going on. I'll be doing  mostly on bodyweight workouts and I'm going to focus on pull ups and core strength.

Updates: 23

I suck at updating, especially over the weekend so I'm adding this in too. I'll also make sure when I update I check other people's challenges and comment as I've not been great at keeping up with people recently.

I'm jumping straight in and starting this challenge today. Lets get stupid!

Natural selection? I do find Sloths weirdly cute. I'm sure I watched a nature show where they were with a guy who's job it was to drive down roads and help sloths cross the roads because they were so slow they were always getting hit by cars. Best job ever!

Update 1/23 - Monday 11th

I'm not sure if I should count this as an update, as I didn't actually do anything! Monday is normally a lifting day, but it turns out that doing a 10km OCR followed by a 9 mile training run really takes it out of you! So I took it easy and just did some stretching.

Being tired after this weekend leaves me a little worried for this coming weekend, as I have Nuclear Blast on Saturday and I decided that it would be a good idea to sign up for a local 10 mile race on Sunday - because my training plan called for a 10 mile run and I thought, 'meh, why not?'.

I'm doing Blast with Hubs, and we originally planned for 2 laps*, but now we're thinking of trying to do 2 fast laps and then doing an extra slow "fun/victory" lap. It's all going to depend on how fast we can do the first 2 laps in though.

Tonight is an easy paced run of 4.5 miles and hopefully I'll be able to get through my bodyweight circuit afterwards too.

* Nuclear Blast is a time-limited lapped OCR of 5km, so it's as many laps as you can do in 2 hours. So if you get to the finish line after a lap in 1hr 58mins, you can still go out and run another lap.

That moment when you realise that maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all :D Learning ones limitations is part of the experience I suppose!  Although I don't think it is in the nature of Rangers to really ever learn that lesson. I still thinking it's a great idea to keep stacking events into a tiny window. Oh 3 ocrs and 2 races in 8 weeks, what's the problem?

Though I do think it is a good idea to treat some of the 'races' as fun training runs instead.

Wow that's a lot for the weekend. I totally think you can do it though, especially if you are treating the Sunday race more like a training run.

I always intend to treat them as training runs, but that goes out the window pretty early on in the race! I should be fine as long as I'm sensible and stretch / refuel / recover properly on Saturday afternoon.

I thought I'd learnt my lesson after my mad May of back-to-back ocrs, but apparently not! The main reason I signed up for the 10 mile race was to make sure I get my long run in this week. If I've paid for the race, I'm going to do it. If I just planned a training run on my own, there is a chance I would come up with an excuse to sit on my arse and do nothing.

Weirdly, this reminds me of when an old work friend of mine went into graphic detail about the difficult birth of her child (stay with me on this) and then said to me "I'm telling you this so if in a few years time I tell you I want another baby, you'll remind me about it so I change my mind". She now has 4 kids.

I guess over time the bad experiences fade away and you only remember the good stuff. Or the good feelings are much stronger than the bad. When I think back to Nuclear this year, I can remember being really tired and skipping a few obstacles because of it, but the overall feeling of that memory is of being really happy and laughing a lot. If I was having horrible flashbacks to being in pain or miserable, there would be no way I'd be signing up next year.

PS. I'm not being a complete douche and comparing running a race to childbirth, I'm just using it as an example of how we forget pain and discomfort over time if the result of the pain is something positive.

:D yeah and we just can't learn our limitations. I'm  trying to decide whether I should do Nuclear Blast or a 10K race the week after RRDW. Neither of them are a good idea! I'm waiting to see how much I enjoy Nuclear Fallout before I make any decisions though.

Hello!

Update 2/23 - Tuesday

Keep it Simple:

Running 1/19

4.5 miles at an easy pace, on a flat route as my calves were still a little sore. All good, except the heavens opened in the last mile and I got soaked. Suppose I better get used to that happening again! Bye bye summer.

Strength 1/10

After the run, I did my bodyweight circuit. I didn't quite finish the last circuit, as Stu came out of the kitchen carrying fajitas and nothing else in the world mattered anymore except those little Mexican beauties.  I only skipped my last plank and I still have a little core DOMS from Saturday. So not real loss. And I have left over fajitas for lunch today. Score.

Keep it Stupid:

When I got up this morning, my hair had parted itself the middle and I looked like early 90's Nick Carter. It was freaky and now I can't get Backstreet Boy's songs out of my head. Send help.
