Buses suck I had to cancel a WWOOFing appointment because I couldn't get there by bus from where I am And I had to change my New Zealand plans somewhat, and may have to cut out any hiking due to an inability to get to trails alone. Sad times THE LIST Book WOOFing from 15th to 23rd Organise how to get there and back Book first night in Auckland Figure out what I want to do for 7 days Book hostels Book transport Figure out if I'm dropping things of at the DTS base Pay for DTS Organise packing list & if I need anything & what I can leave behind Get Hep A vaccination Pick up ID from center (unknown when it will arrive) Clean room THE HABITS I am moving, uncertain, planning, a mess. #1 morning Wake up at 8 every day, no matter where I am. This will hopefully also give me a bedtime. (I woke up at 11:30 after going to bed at 5am - messes up any hope of establishing a morning routine) #2 junk Replace cereal with fruit in the morning. Only one sugary drink a day - replace rest with water or milk (Sprite is so easy to drink tons of when you're in a hot country) #3 psalms Read 5 chapters of Psalms everyday. Attach to habit of lunch. (I'm not as good at updating in the Scriptorium, but I'm writing it down, and as repetitive as it is, I love how there are solid things you can learn and implement from them) #4 things Try for two things off the to-do list a day. (This needs to get done, and the sooner the better.) #5 bonus Write. RP, my story, podcast, pilots, whatever. Figure out how to enable this. (no. 4 will run out in about a week, so if I have the energy I will add this task. SOMETHING UNEXPECTED There's a pull up bar outside my room right now. I've taken to trying to do three scapular thingies every time I enter or leave my room. Tbh the habits aren't things that I'm basing my life around, but something I can focus on and think about throughout the day to make small steps. Yeah, when you're depending on buses as your main form of transport from school or in a different country and they only run five times a day and you really need to catch the next one so you can go home. And then they don't arrive on time. (Only happened to me once so far and I was with the rest of my family but definitely not something I want to experience again in a hurry). I arrive in Auckland, so am probably going to spend some time there, but anywhere I go needs to be accessible by bus (due to aforementioned transport issues) During the course I'll be seeing plenty of Tauranga, and maybe hiking some stuff around the North Island. Severine Posted September 18, 2017 Report Share Posted September 18, 2017 Your adventure sounds so exciting. Sorry you have to depend on buses but sometimes there are ways around it. When I was in Scotland I didn't drive at all but I posted to some hiking/outdoorsy forums and found people I could carpool with to hiking spots - in some cases I even went hiking with them and met some cool people. I like super organized trips, but one time I did 3 months on my own in Europe with no itinerary and it was pretty much the coolest. Infinity.Creates Posted September 19, 2017 Author Report Share Posted September 19, 2017 Blergy I'm leaving on the 5th, so plenty of time, while also trying to figure if I can find another WWOOF place to shove into that period (Pinging once a week would probs be more than enough, but I definitely ditch my thread for others, so idk. Whenever you like :P) Well, today was a day. I walked 3 miles to my grandmother's house for 9am. Spent four hours cooking. Spent four hours sleeping. Spent two hours doing nothing. Then from 11pm to 12pm was spent watching the rest of my family perform a prayer ceremony for my grandfather and other deceased ancestors, then eating all the offering food. (I had so much great fried chicken at 11:30pm. Oops?) I am 100% socially exhausted, started my period yesterday, learnt some cool recipes, spent time with the family, listened to a couple extra podcasts, got absolutely none of my habits done. Infinity.Creates Posted September 26, 2017 Author Report Share Posted September 26, 2017 I've done legitimately none of my to-do list (thanks executive function) and so that's a constant stress haunting the back of my mind Food is going slightly better but not great because I'm living with other people and requesting change is hard when carbs are asian food and I'm not about to go grocery shopping. But I'm doing the best with what I have and eating a lot more fruit. The morning is coming along, though the wake up is at 9am, but this is because I go to bed at the same time everyday, round 12:30-1am. Again, often out of my control. It is currently 12:15 and I just finished a birthday meal for my cousin - technically now yesterdays. My uncle went shopping at 11:30, my cousin came home at 11:45, when we celebrated. This is when his work ended, and is the common routine for people in Korea. So, doing the best with what I can. Psalms is actually going really well, though I skip days I find it easy to catch up. Interesting messages and ideas for me to ponder, and some questions I look forward to exploring with my DTS in less than a month. The writing is coming along really well, and I've got some steam for the project and am hammering out a little bit every day. I think I need to revisit having mini to-do lists every day and some time schedules on them to help me out though. Also to get some things booked and organised. Because it's not me buying the food, but then it's there and I want it - and that's always harder to stop. I think I've finally managed to determine my itinerary, and now I've just got to book accommodation and transport. I'm nervous excited now, properly, because it's in less than a week and I'm going alone, which is scary, but then I'm actively travelling by myself and spending time by myself, which is a new thing, but should be a fun adventure and learning experience. And yeah, I'm having a good time. Done quite a bit, figured out myself a bit, seen a lot. Tinged with a touch of homesickness, but I wouldn't trade this for very much at all. And a positive is that university plans seem to be settling into place. I went to Grandmother's house yesterday to help cook all morning for harvest celebration, then came home and packed most of my things and figured out my plan in New Zealand and started booking things. Then today I was up at 4:30 to help prepare food and ancestor's remembrance (for the Buddhists or the Korean pagan believers you also pray to them for guidance and support) at 6am, then had an early breakfast of eating all of those offerings. This was the whole family that's currently in Korea, so my Grandmother, two aunts, their husbands, their two kids, and a pair of great grandchildren, plus me. Then they all split and I helped my Halmoni shell beans for the morning (watching some very good Korean female volleyball). Then afternoon and I played with my cousin's kids, before coming home at 7pm. Then it was phoning a friend in England, checking in with my parents, talking with a friend, and then going out for a short walk with my cousin's girlfriend who I've become quite close to. I got back at around 9pm. Then packing all the last of my stuff (I really hope that this can pass into carry on - though I'm slightly dubious. The backpack is fine, but the laptop bag is a bit chunky and may cast suspicion) and figuring out the final things I need to do. Figuring out my finances, my budget, how to get to my hostel in New Zealand, how to get a SIM card and bus pass while there, final things I need to do in the house and how to clean up after myself, online check in and figuring out final logistics of how I'm getting to the airport.
