Vibrantella Stays Zen

So, after two and a half years of a major health and fitness drive, shedding 38 kg to get from BMI of 40 to 28, reversing my Type 2 diabetes and normalising liver enzymes, blood pressure and lipids, and generally feeling fitter and healthier than ever - this happened.

Spoiler

I can't really share it here, sorry!  At least, not yet.  Suffice it to say I need to have major surgery (on the 27th), luckily non-life-threathening, and I'm a bit annoyed! (slightly scared too).

This means that my main goal this challenge is to stay zen, calm and balanced.  To that end, I am already doing my Reiki meditations/healings, but would like to add 10 minutes per day of Eden Energy Medicine exercises.

Food is going to continue to be keto, with fasting - there is a lot of research showing that ketosis both enhances the beneficial effects of conventional treatment, and reduces the possible side effects.

Fitness - gym or kettlebells 3 x week before surgery; afterwards probably a bit of a pause on the strength training front, but we'll see how it goes.  Walking to Mordor should continue, even if at a slower pace for a while - curently I'm less than 200 km away from the fires of Mount Doom.

LUYL - the second year of my MA in Classical Studies is starting, so need to crack on with the study.

Incidentally, it's going to be my birthday in the last week of the challenge.  Next week is Mabon.  This is usually my favourite time of the year, and I've been collecing shiny conkers again.

Thanks; I go between wanting to talk about it, and major avoiding (if I don't think about it, it isn't actually happening, is it?!)

Not thinking about it is also a strategy to stay zen. It will happen whether you think about it or not. And if not thinking about it makes you feel better, why not?

Recap of Week Zero:

1.  Meditation  & Energy Work - 50%

I've been doing a lot of Reiki, which is good; what I haven't been doing is EFT and EEM, and I need them too.

Spoiler

I'm having somewhat of a hard time at the moment trying to reach acceptance of my health issue - my mind keeps churning the same feelings of shock, disbelief, anger, etc.  Why me?  What have I done to deserve this?  I must have done something, it's my fault, I'm guilty...  Obviously all of this sounds irrational when spoken out loud/written down, but inside my head it's quite convincing!  EFT/tapping should help with getting out of that loop, and EEM with lifting my spirits/energies.  I hope!

2.  Food - 80%

My fasting has been impeccable, and so was low-carbing.  I did go slightly over for keto-level carbs & prots by adding more veggies (for health) and some LC treats (for comfort).  Veggies are good, treats not so much - but I might allow myself to go with the flow in the next couple of weeks too.  I don't need more stress at this moment!

3.  Fitness - 100%

Two gym visits and a kettlebell swing session at home.  Total volume lifted: 15,892 kg  Also, good walking.

4.  MA Study - 50%

Have not done much, but a) great that I did something, and b ) it was good quality.  ;)

Considering all things, I think you did good at a uncertain time. Sometimes ease is extremely important. It was kinda my intention/word for the last couple of months. (This made me remember the new word I'd picked and it lifted my spirits that have been annoyed almost since I woke up. My new word is joy.)

What is EEM btw?

Hang in there! The waiting is (usually, hopefully) the worst part of surgery. :( I'm sorry you have to have it, but I hope everything goes well.

Eden Energy Medicine - there's a lot on YT, but I have her books (and spin-offs by other authors).  In simple terms, self-acupressure and massage.

Surgery is definitely scary, even for people like me who have had many surgeries. So you are totally normal and it's okay to have feelings. Working on being zen is a great goal!

Thanks!  Sorry you had to have many!

Blessed Mabon, everyone, or if you prefer, happy autumn equinox! :D

It was a lovely day today, and I had some good news - a plot has become vacant on the allotment site nearby and we're going to see it tomorrow!  I hope it works out.  Apparently, it's quite overgrown, but not with brambles, thank goodness!

The challenge has been going relatively well, and I'm especially proud of resisting comfort eating.  I'll update at the end of the week, as usual.  On Sunday, we're going to my great-nephew's first birthday party.  Currently he is the youngest of our tribe!  :D Only a few weeks ago we celebrated his grandad's 80th...

Week 1 went like this:

1.  Meditation  & Energy Work - 75%

I'm doing it when I feel the need, which is often!

2.  Food - 90%

Still adding loads of colourful veg, which is good; maybe a little too much of nuts/ nut butters...

3.  Fitness - 100%

Total volume lifted: 22,308 kg.  Walking: 135 km to the fiery cracks of Mt Doom.

4.  MA Study - 40%

This is not a priority at the moment, as the year hasn't officially started yet.

This week has mostly been hosp appts, and now I'm freaking out as I seem to be coming down with a cold - hope that's still OK for surgery!  Well, I'll find out tomorrow...

Yes and yes! :D Thanks, @Dagger!

The surgery went well, as far as they can say at this moment - will know more in a couple of weeks.  I was very nauseous from the general anaesthetic, and still feel a bit dizzy, but not in much pain, thank goodness (and codeine!).  I started with the recommended exercises last night, only to read today that I'm just supposed to do half of them in the first week after surgery.  What can I say, exercise overachiever, moi? ;)

Be careful and listen to your body. :) The exercise will be there for when you are healed.

Thanks, @Taddea Zhaan!  The exercises are very basic, recovery-type gentle stretches, so I should be fine.  I want to help my body to heal in every way possible - rest, recovery, diet, meditation.  Mr V. is taking good care of me, and my family too - I am lucky.

Here's another poem I found in my Moon Journal that resonated with me, especially at this point in time:

Comfortable

I didn't come here to be comfortable.

I came to be naked, raw, to melt and burn and howl and fly,

At the wild edges, the rich depths.

I am a bloody creature beamed in from a heavenly starred sky;

I am growing in the deep diving shadows

As much as the up rising light.

I didn't come here to be 'nice' or 'easy'.

I came to rip the blinkers from my eyes

And fire-burn the over culture conditioning from my purpose.

I came to be a mirror to all your wierd and hurting places,

Because I long for one for mine.

I came to hunt the old stories, those sly deceits,

I came to take bitter, biting knowledge into my mouth,

Let it redefine all I knew, let it refine into wisdom.

I came to revel in the sandstorm blast

Until only the strong, bare bones

Of my truths are left bright gleaming.

I came to break again and again and again.

Thrown onto the rocks of my misunderstandings and fear,

And be made anew with golden mendings of trust and learning.

Again. And again.  And again.

I came for 3am disintegrating.

That is:  I came to bed down in the dark nights of the soul,

To wander sightless in the depths, knowing

Dawn will always come

and I will be a richer weaving by the time of its blessing.

I came to hear things I do not 'like'.

I came to say things you may not 'like'.

I came in the hope we will co-create the deep, joyous relief

Of listening and expressing

Without reactive defense, agenda or manipulation.

I came to be messy, and get messier.

I came in the belief we are all brilliantly, perefectly flawed.

Week 2 waz liiiike:

1.  Meditation  & Energy Work - 95%

Meditation works well with all the post-op resting, and energy work can be combined with the stretching exercises;  win-win! :D

2.  Food - 50%

I've dropped fasting until further notice (probably 2 weeks post-op) even though my physical health would benefit; at this stage I have to look after my mental health too, and be gentle to myself

3.  Fitness - not sure how to score

Went to the gym once, 2 days before surgery, and most likely won't go back for at least another week, if not 2.  Walking has reduced dramatically, as I'm mostly resting (still feeling weak).  However, I am doing all the prescribed exercises and streches, so not all bad...?

4.  MA Study - 20%

I've started looking at it, but to be perfectly honest, it's not getting into my brain.  My mind is all over the place, as I'm trying to research as much as possible about further treatment, and then it all gets too much and I end up watching funny movies or playing mindless games...  Again, I need to give myself time to deal.
