Laoch: 1st Challenge ever!

Recommended Posts

Hi there. My name is Laoch, aka Mike, and I came across NF about 5 years ago. Perused the website but fell off the bandwagon, as it were. I am going to "level up" by doing my 1st Challenge. I am stating this because I want to be held accountable for something other than doing the occasional workout via an app. Why wait until the New Year, when I can start now, right?

I like Sci-Fi movies, i.e. Star Trek, Star Wars. As far as TV shows I am into The Orville right now, surprised on how good it is. I like The Big Bang Theory too. Not a gamer, never did get into it.

My Main Quest is to lose 10 lbs.

My 2-3 Challenge goals are:

     1. Eat veggies with every meal.

     2. Drink WATER. This is going to be a challenge for sure as my normal day, for the past umpteen years or decades, consists of drinking my 30 oz. mug of coffee, drinking a diet soda with lunch and               maybe a glass of milk or crystal light with dinner. I am surprised that I haven't died of dehydration yet, although I do feel the effects at times.

     3. Complete the NF bodyweight program 3x/week.

Hi Laoch!

For the water challenge, have you considered flavored seltzer waters? They're unsweetened, so make take some getting used to, but I feel like my goal of drastically cutting down on daily soda was made possible largely thanks to the seltzer waters. La Croix is the most common brand around where I live.

I am a huge fan of the flavored "seltzer" waters from Wal-Mart. Cherry and Fiji Apple are my go to's. Today I am.making a trip to get fresh spring water, straight from the ground. It's an hour away but worth the trip. Cleanest tasting water ever!

Ah. the 'increase my veggie intake challenge'. I've been there too. :D I like to make a batch of veggie soup, puree it with a stick blender and drink a few cups every day. It works a treat. Pick whatever veggies you like, but I recommend tomato for the flavor and spinach for the nutrition. Liberal amounts of cayenne are also wonderful. ;) You can drink it hot or cold. It's good either way.

For water intake, there are lots of ways to go about it. You can try a glass of water on the hour every hour at work. That will amount to about 7-8 glasses. Or you can do half that. It's still a good amount of water.

Good luck with your first challenge. Cheers!

@scalyfreak has much wisdom, and the citrus or ginger flavors tend to do the best. Something about my tongue tasting a flavor that I already to be bitter, I'm then less confused when there's no sweetness. The berry and mango flavors can be foul for the same reason, a sweet-ish flavor is a terrible thing.

I completely agree. My favorite La Croix are the Grapefruit and Orange so far. Tart without being bitter.

Good luck on the challenge Laoch!

I like to add a slice of lemon to my water.  It's really amazing how much flavor you can get from just a slice of lemon.  I also have a 32oz nalgene bottle that I take to work with me with water, it lets me keep track of how much I'm drinking throughout the day.

Get the prewashed bags of raw vegetables, it's so much easier when you're in a hurry or feeling lazy.

I often thought the same. Until I realized I eat a lot of "wet" foods (e.g. yoghurt, chilis, spaghettis, veggies, fruits, stuff that has water in it).

I know a lot of people comment on La Croix, I never could get used to it. Wife unit tried to get me on board once with the lime (or lemon lime), it just tasted like terrible sprite to me :-D.

What works for me is celestial seasonings herbal teas. I'll grab a bunch when kroger puts them on 10 for $10. In warm times, I typically steep them in warm/hot tap water for a couple hours and keep it in the fridge. In cold times, I tend to make hot each morning.

The best transport method for me is a trusty old stanley thermos. It's a full liter, keeps things hot/cold FOREVER (seriously, I've come home from work/out over night before and it was the same temp the NEXT DAY). Love that thing.

Celestial Seasoning has a really good herbal chia, Bengal Spice I believe. Add just a touch of sugar and almond milk to it hot, HEAVEN

If you drink smoothies in the am, adding veggies there is a great addition (just don't do a "fruit salad" smoothie, make it more of a salad smoothie). I do .5 avocado, handful spinach, .25 cup berries, protein powder, peanut butter, and sometimes oats/banana with almond milk & water for the liquid....I'm starting to need a bigger cup :-(

I have read about the "wet foods" before and there is truth to it. I am in the same boat as you where LaCroix is concerned, tastes kinda weird to me. Although, it's been several years since I tried it, I may give it a go and give it another shot! As far as veggies go, in my scrambled eggs I have started using Scramble by Clever Foods; the Leafy Greens "flavor". Absolutely delicious! They have 3 flavors, Leafy Greens, Rancheros and Mediterranean. I attached the label from it. Can usually find it in the egg section of the grocery store.

To be fair, I did not think the lime flavored La Croix was very good either. Tasted like lime juice with a bit of salt in it... not my favorite. I have not tried the lemon one, since I enjoy the orange, tangerine, and grapefruit varieties and I am happy sticking with them.

Hello there, Laoch. While I'm not familiar with the workout you're doing 3x per week, I trust it'll be epic and so will you! I envy your future success in eating veggies at every meal. I'm lucky if I fit veggies in once per day, although vegan hamburgers are supposed to be veggies. As for water, my recommendation is as follows:

image.png.1231022cc066b3354c726883af7edc96.png

The days I remember to pack a water bottle, I'm in the bathroom like 6 times just to pee. Days without my water bottle, I don't drink water at all.

Best of luck to you, fellow newbie!

Thanks! I brought a 2.5 gallon jug to the office this morning for me to drink the next couple of days! Gonna get a head start on the hydration before we kick off. As far as the workout, it'll be the NF Bodyweight workout. Looking forward to it!

You can never go wrong with bacon and eggs. Although I'm jealous of anyone able to make scrambled eggs on a workday mornings; I never have the time as I am just the worst at getting up early.

You can also cook them the night before then nuke 'em in the morning.
