Kestrel Lights Up Winter

Kestrel Grey

Recommended Posts

I'm embracing the anti-hype movement this challenge.  Keeping it simple worked well for me last time, mostly because it shifted my goals from "aspirations" to "things I just do".  S.A.D. is still a player in my world so this challenge will involve keeping him under my thumb.

1. Go outside every day.

Any length of time will do.  Most days this will be a 20 minute walk before breakfast and I can augment my daylight with a light box during my Spanish study sessions.

2. Move every day.

This is a repeat from the last challenge.  I plan on a bit more structure, alternating running (on the dreadmill) with a roughly progressive weight-lifting program, and some random fun classes or snowshoe trips thrown in there.  But simply I move every day, regardless of what that looks like in the end.

3. Stick to the diet.

I mentioned last week that I have a bet with a friend, and every time I cheat I pay $5 from my trip fund (Sunday morning pancakes don't count).  I really can't afford to lose any of my travel budget.  I suspect the hardest part will be remembering to say no when I am unexpectedly offered sweets, since it is automatic to say yes.  I want to lose about 2.5 lbs by Christmas so I will be weighing in regularly and adjusting portion sizes as needed.

4. Meal Plan.

Every Monday I will sit down and figure out our meals/groceries for the week.  As much as possible I will prep in advance, but I am not insisting on keeping to the plan; mostly it is there to avoid last-minute worrying about what I am going to cook or unnecessary grocery trips for missing ingredients.  I need to keep things easy on myself this month.

5. Keep to the Information Diet.

Another repeat from last time, but I think it is doing me good.  I have cancelled holds on all the self-help books I've been waiting to read.

Mostly I want to enjoy Winter again.

It's perfectly possible to turn the automatic yes into an automatic no. Just get into the mindset that when someone offers you sweets your response is always 'no thanks' (easier said than done, but that's my tactic. It doesn't always mean I don't change my mind but it does get rid of the initial auto accept with the added bonus that eventually my work colleagues stopped asking me altogether). TBH if I had what you had on the lines and in the circumstances it would take a lot to make me fail :D

At work I think I can handle it. I expect temptations there so I am forewarned and prepared. :D   There is one coworker I had to go so far as sitting him down and saying, very seriously, if he bought me a blizzard again I would throw it in the garbage in front of him.  He stopped trying to enable me after that.

I started weight training this week, and ouch! I have lost so much of my strength since I last seriously weight trained in the Spring.  Those numbers weren't impressive by normal standards but it was hard work to get there, and I'm not very happy about losing it.  For me, it looks like half-assed bodyweight training just isn't cutting it.

Last time in the gym (March-ish?)

pull-ups (assisted): pulling 2/3 bodyweight for 5 sets of 5

squat: 85 lbs for 5 sets of 5

deadlift: 125 lbs for 5 sets of 5

Today at the gym

pull-ups (assisted): pulling less than 1/2 bodyweight. And no, I didn't gain 50 lbs.

squat: warm-up sets with the empty bar caused my thighs to seize. Still can't walk properly.

deadlift: didn't even go there.

Looks like it's back to square one.  Hopefully it is at least a little faster to recover than it was to gain in the first place.

It is very sad when that happens. The good news is that it shouldn't take as much work to get those numbers back up.

I've heard the only time strength gains are linear are for absolute beginners and for people regaining strength they just lost.  So I am looking forward to gainz at least. :D

the simplicity of your plans is awesome.

and I love the pic as well.

I find 2 very interesting.  do you intend to workout each day?  that would be an epic challenge, indeed.

OTOH, my dad does, I think something very similar.  he says at 71 if your not fighting each day to keep up your fitness your lose it very quickly.

(and just to put perspective on it;  my Dad and I just did a pretty rigorous 14 mile hike today  (~20km)

I plan to do something each day, but it won't always be strength training.  My mornings are flexible so I can make time for a run or workout easily.

That's cool about your dad. I hope to be like him when I get older.

And hey, we've got the same birthday! Hi birthday buddy! :D

Week Zero - Wednesday

It's sunny!!! And warm!!!! Like, actually above freezing!  If tomorrow is like this too I may feel tempted to pull a "mental health day" and head to the mountains. (I wouldn't actually because then some poor other sot would have to spend the day indoors instead.  If I get up early enough maybe we can skip cooking and get a short hike in before work though.)

This morning I went to the gym for an abs class, since my shoulders and legs were both still feeling Tuesday's pull-ups/dips/squats.  Unfortunately I had forgotten the "TRX Core" class was actually all about the shoulders, so mine are killing me right now.  The next few days will definitely be running or light cardio only.

Spoilered for negativity rant

Spoiler

I am having an ethical dilemma, and you guys are probably the best people to help me.  There is a girl at work that I hate, and I hate because everyone loves her.  Coworkers have actually said to me "oh, isn't it a pity that she didn't get that position she wanted? She's such a nice girl!" when they knew I got the position instead of her.  Grrrr.  She's like fucking Ned Flanders.  Anyways, she was overweight and inactive when she started working here about 8 months ago, and some of the women who are marathon runners took her under their wing and she has lost a ton of weight and become a pretty decent runner just in the last year.  She now runs about 5K a day plus an 8-10K on the weekends.  This is her first winter as a runner though and she is hating the dreadmill, so she is afraid her running will suffer.

Now, on hearing this I really really want to become a better runner over the winter so I can run circles around her come Spring.  It is my only chance to surpass her.  I don't believe jealousy is a healthy motivator, but since I am jealous anyways, what's the harm in using it to make me better?

Week Zero - Thursday

Today was rough, for no real reason.  I had a hard time getting out of bed - in fact, I stayed in bed until 2pm when I had to get up for work.  So no outside time and no exercise, alas.  It is a pity because exercise gives me energy for a couple hours and going outside makes me happier all day.  Maybe I am coming down with something?

My light box is getting broken-in today at work, and is it ever bright.  I am mostly blinded writing this, but it makes my dank dark lab feel like summer. :)

I don't think you are a downer.

if you think about it; someone else Could not easily depress you on here.  instead the idea is sharing and encouragement with each other; with a lot of allowance for hearing someone vent and being like. "oh, thats unfortunate.  I hope things get better for you".

its both carthatic to vent and to give support.   to give high-fives to someone who is celebrating;  and earnest support for someone else that is struggling.

surely we've all seen high moments (and low) in our life.

What makes you think you've upset anyone? I really can't say it any better than @TGP. We all go through highs and lows and many of us spill these things right out onto these boards. I am no different with that. Never, ever feel guilty about it. It's the entire purpose of a support group. It may be easier to write about the highs but far more helpful when we express our lows and seek support for them.

Much like the guys above me have said, we don't think you're a downer. Life gets rough sometimes, and for some of us during the winter it gets downright ugly. It might sometimes get a little uncomfortable posting about it, I know I've had to question whether to put my own struggles out there more than once, but sometimes it helps just to get it out there, and we're all here to listen and offer whatever support and encouragement we can.

Thanks, I guess I am just worrying a little too much.  People come here for inspiration and I don't want to bring anyone down.  Probably I just need more practise telling that relentless inner voice to STFU. :) Promise you all will call me out if you see me giving in to it though.

I don't even think it's this ... we don't come here to the boards for inspiration so much as we come here for community, for support, and for accountability. Literally nowhere in any of that does it say we have to be happy all the time or positive when we don't feel like it. In fact, a lot of times it's really helpful to see others continue to show up and grind despite that sad inner voice, and to acknowledge that it exists and that they're not afraid of airing it. Exposing the darkness is always the first step to shining light on it and chasing it away - it always gets stronger and darker when it's hidden. Bringing your sad (and S.A.D.) thoughts here and letting us help you deal with them might help you feel better.

So the short version of all that is - please don't go away. And please don't try to hide your inner voice. It doesn't scare us, we promise. And we're more than happy to point some light in your direction when it feels a little too dark for your comfort. That's what family is for.  ;)
