Got my workout in the hotel yesterday afternoon (I had a few hours open) as well as I could, but they didn't have a pullup bar so I had to improvise.  They had some pullup handles, which were OK but they were murder on my pinky fingers.  I also failed to notice that they are attached straight out from a support bar and I managed to bang my head on the support bar on my first pullup attempt :(   I did my stretching right after the workout, which was good because I didn't have time later in the evening due to late meetings.  I should have some time tonight for both a workout and stretching.

No idea what I will do for food this week, I was going to do a thanksgiving type spread but won't have time for it because of this trip.  My weekend is already pretty much scheduled out so I may not have time for anything anyway.  I may need to make up for it by doing a couple next next week

For good deeds, I haven't had much chances while I have been here at this conference but I did help some people take some pictures.  I guess that counts for something.

I am feeling very warriory right now.  I went down to the hotel gym, originally planning to just do some light pullup work, but there was some guy standing in the pullup cage doing all kinds of bicep curls.  Instead I decided to do a leg day so I started off with my usual dumbbell stuff like single leg hip extensions, weighted single leg squats (28Kgs), single leg dead lift (60Kgs) and goblet squats (30kgs).  By this time the Curl Bro (who I noticed had huge arms but chopsticks for legs) had cleared out and I was pretty much the only person left in the gym.  Then I got to thinking that as long as I was in a proper gym, I might as well try out some real weights just to get an idea of how much I can lift.

First was squats.  I was very disappointed to discover that I could only do full ROM squats (thighs below parallel) at 40Kgs*.  I thought I had stronger legs than that but apparently not.  Apparently ankle flexibility isn't my only limiting factor for pistol squats...  After that, I tried deadlift and was much happier.  I started at 50Kgs and worked my way up to 100Kgs.  I could have gone even higher but my grip was shot.  Then just for fun I decided to try benching and I got up to 70Kgs before my arms gave out. I really wanted to do 80 which is about my body weight, but it just wasn't happening.

Anyway, after doing this and feeling all warriory, I was hungry and decided to go out and get something to eat, evn though it was already almost 11pm.  I found a bar & grill that was still open near the hotel and got a bacon double cheeseburger.  I usually have a hard time finishing double burgers, but this one seemed to just disappear I was still hungry.  I thought about getting something else, but decided not to because they were pretty pricey.

I wanted to put all of these in here so that I would have a record the next time I find myself in a gym I can see how I compare. :)

Great job Ghost.  Was it a full size barbell?  If it was it should have been 20 kg, if it was about  300mm ( 12 inch) short and slightly less big around it is a mid bar and is 10 kg.  I am really surprised you couldn't do more squat with he leg workouts you do.  Single leg squats should equate to good strength.  I am glad you made bird legs feel uncomfortable by doing leg excercises lol.  I remember from my past that gym that are upper body only get kind of edgy around people doing leg work.  I think they feel less superior then.

Burger fuel will get you big Brother!  Glad you got a good work out while on teh road.  And you may want to count your leg work in front of CurlBro as charity.  you may have shown him how he disappoints Brodin!

When Brandt and I used to go to the gym together there used to be guys there that fit this description. Brandt is very muscled, especially his legs, so when he walked in, a lot of the young guys with huge arms and thin legs would leave, or go to a different section of the gym :D I asked him about it once, because I tried to tell the one guy it was ok, we weren't going to use the weights he was busy with, but he sped off. Brandt just shrugged, then the manager told us his opinion about them being intimidated with Brandt's big legs. That happened when the firefighters came to train as well.

I think those numbers are very impressive! Nice going. You've set the bar now however, so just up from here ;)

We have an old training bar here at home which weighs 6.5kg. I think it is standardised now.

I don't spend time in gyms so I thought the whole meme was exaggerated. I thought it was really quite funny actually. In the beginning we were kind of eyeing each other and I could see him watching every time I picked up a set of dumbbells. The more I did only legs, though, I noticed his grunting became more and more exaggerated until finally he just packed up and left :D:D:D

I'm usually very accepting of when gym equipment is in use. There is a limited amount and we're all paying the same money, first come first served and all that,  but it really bugs me when someone is using more than a barbell to do curling.

Ankle mobility can make full squats very difficult too. I've got that problem myself. I can hit parallel but going much past it is nearly impossible without doubling over.

I'm confused,  you mean someone using multiple sets dumbbells?  or are you talking about the fixed barbells?

Ankle mobility was easily for me to fix with disctracted ankle stretches.  Use a large band on mediun stregth, put it as low on your ankle as you can and lunge forward as far as you can (so the band is going directly opposite the direction of your foot.)  Keep your heel on the ground and drive your knee forward in 3 directions,  knee over big toe, knee over middle toe and knee over pinky toe.  Do this with some foam rolling/lax ball work on your calves and achilles and you can get significant improvement in ROM practically over night.

This is what happens when my attention is drawn away from my faithful and finds all the hate on curls.

That's where I learned about it. Especially the young guys, early twenties, or high school boys in the rugby team, fell under this group. I was concentrating to stay alive most of the time (between Brandt and the trainer), so I only picked up on it later on. Brandt just thought at first that they had already finished by the time we got there. What was funny one day though, was standing on the beach with my mil waiting for Brandt to finish a triathlon, and two body builders coming to mil to ask how she got her calves so built! They were huge on top and decent legs, but small, small calves! She told them genes, because her dad was from German stock and he had these huge calves, which Brandt also have. They were so impressed :D No give credit where credit is due. Some people really are trying but genes do play a role too, no matter how much you train (I think). I have respect for anyone who works on his/her body. Sometimes the situation just makes it funny. And I can't really talk on what a body looks like anyway :P

I've been trying this. It's not made much, if any difference. It's incredibly odd for me to have problems with these kinds of problems with mobility so it might be some weirdness with my particular physiology (hypermobilty, i generally have exaggerated ranges of motion in most of my joints). Or I might be doing it wrong :) Only so much you can get from youtube videos.

No I'm talking about people curling in squat racks, in particular. Though dumbbell curls in squat racks is particularly infuriating. Especially when they don't clear up after themselves.

I'm usually very accepting of when gym equipment is in use. There is a limited amount and we're all paying the same money, first come first served and all that,  but it really bugs me when someone is using more than a barbell to do curling.

I don't mind people using the equipment however they like.  I understand the entire premise of crossfit is finding creative ways to use whatever equipment in in the gym?  I was merely annoyed that the guy spent 20 minutes using the equipment that I wanted, but in the end I was able to get in a good workout using what was available

Ankle mobility can make full squats very difficult too. I've got that problem myself. I can hit parallel but going much past it is nearly impossible without doubling over.

same!

It was a little hard to tell how much of it was ankle mobility vs strength but at the lower weight I was able to get completely down (butt touching ankles) and hold for 3 seconds, so I think it was mostly strength (but also a little bit of technique/familiarity)

Br0din loves curls in the squat rack.  Espeically Bro's that curl more than you squat.  Just leave you wieght racked for me...  its curls time!

Yeah, curls are cool too, I guess.  They help build up strength in one of the muscles you use for a chinup so they aren't completely useless ;)  This particular Bro was using the lat pulldown cable for his curls (moved the pulley to the floor) and left the pin in when he left.  His curl weight was just right for me to use for my lat pulldowns :)

For the Meme, thats an Army gym, that dude is a wounded veteran who couldn't walk for a while.  Or at least that's what I read on the internet.  But you can tell he's getting his lagging legs.  That vain on his shin, obvious quad bumps.  But yes,  small legged bro's are fun to tease.

I meant the meme of huge upper/tiny lower meme in general, not this particular picture.  The Bro at the hotel had thighs that were only barely larger than his calf...

Come over to the dark side, we have pizza, donuts and icecream.

I am bulking for the first time right now and am quite happy with the results so far.  The dark side certainly has its perks.  If I had regular access to a gym here, I would probably do a challenge or two with you guys.  I am happy with my upper body workouts but I could use more heavy deadlift and squat workouts for my lower body.  I find getting good lower body workouts is hard with bodyweight alone.

I understand it can be hard to build up certain muscle groups the way you want, but this guy clearly wasn't even trying.  When you thighs are just as big as your calves, the problem isn't genetic ;)

This guy wasn't in the squat rack, he was using the pullup/lat pulldown station.  Which was fine, except that I wanted to use that place too.  He was there first, though, so I couldn't really complain.  I just thought it was funny that he was trying to be impressive with his loud curls but I was too distracted by his proportional imbalance :D

Update time:

I am back in Beijing now so getting back into my schedule.  Workout today was originally supposed to be leg day, but because my last workout was legs I switched it out and did my upper body circuits instead.  Tomorrow will be legs again and then I will get back to my regular schedule next week.  I am thinking I may need to change the order up a bit, though. Doing back levers at the end when my grip is getting really tired may not be the best idea.  I think I will switch it up and put those earlier in the circuit.

I didn't do any stretching after my epic workout at the gym, and I was feeling it.  Everywhere was eally tight last night as I was stretching and it felt like I was back to where I started.  I finally loosened up a bit by the end though, so it's all good :)

I think this week may be hard for cooking. I don't have any free days for the rest of this week, so I think I am going to have to skip this week and then make up for it next week.

For the good turn, I didn't do much. I held the gate to our complex for a lady walking her dog this morning, but it turns out she wasn't going out.  Oh well, I will take it anyway :)

Glad you made it back safely.  Food will take care of itself.  Make more chili, fast and simple.  I think you may be having trouble with your good turns because you are a nice guy to begin with and things that others would consider good turns you just do as a matter of course.

Bit late but I agree with the comment above that the squat number won’t have truly reflected your strength because of lack of familiarity and practice.

Also re weird uses of gym equipment: when I was in the gym on Monday I looked round for the bench I usually use to get up to the pull up bar.  It was stuck in the machine that is normally used to do those leg/hip extensions out to the side - apparently there’s a guy who likes to use the machine instead for lateral arm raises and puts the bench in there so he can sit down whilst doing them.
