I am bulking for the first time right now and am quite happy with the results so far.  The dark side certainly has its perks.  If I had regular access to a gym here, I would probably do a challenge or two with you guys.  I am happy with my upper body workouts but I could use more heavy deadlift and squat workouts for my lower body.  I find getting good lower body workouts is hard with bodyweight alone.

 

Yeah, I knew when I wrote what I did, my tone was wrong.  I wanted ha ha fun and games... but it came out ha ha cruel and mean.

 

Your always welcome to challenge with us.  

 

Goblet squats with a kettlebell or something can destroy your legs.  you can do those with improvised weights like a suitcase or back pack.  I like them cause the teach quality ROM and prepare you for the heavy PL/WL stuff.  But I'm sure you know all this already...

That's a good idea, I have plenty of backpacks I can load up.  I would probably need to wear them backward, though, to avoid tipping over (but maybe that would interfere with ROM?) I will need to experiment

Saturday morning update:

 

Mission 1: Workout

I did my leg workout (bodyweight only) while watching Ghostlet at football practice. I noticed that much of the single leg stuff I am doing (especially shrimp squats) are not getting very deep, and gave about the same ROM as the heavy squats I was not counting. I need to think about this and try ti come up with a way to get deeper into my squats.

 

Mission 2: Stretching

I did my stretching last night and then again today after my workout. Really happy with the progress here

 

Mission 3: Cooking

I was reminded last night that I had volunteered to bring a dessert to our church holiday party (Thanksgiving/Christmas combined) so I made some coconut caramel brownies last night. I haven't tasted them so I hope they aren't terrible :D

 

Mission 4: Good Deeds

I can't think of any specific good deeds from yesterday :(

I am not sure at this point what the cause of the problem is, so I will do some more observation.  Once I have a good idea of what is causing the problem I can start thinking about possible solutions.

Week 1 Summary

 

Mission 1: Assassin Stuff - Around-the-World Workout

I got in a few workouts this week, doing upper body Tuesday and Friday, and lower body Wednesday and Saturday.  Upper body workouts have been good, but I need to move the back lever part earlier in the routine while my grip is a little better.  Trying to do them when my grip is starting to give out is just a little too scary for me.  I will need to rework the leg stuff, though, because it isn't giving me the workout I would like.  I will continue experimenting with the weight I have and maybe improvise some new ones.  If that doesn't work, I will just have to increase the reps and decrease the rest periods.

 

Mission 2: More Assassin Stuff - Focused Flexibility/Stretching

This one sometimes feels like I am stagnating, but then suddenly I will notice that I am getting deeper into some stretches than before.   I won't take any measurements until the end of the challenge, but it certainly feels like improvements are happening (although gradually)

 

Mission 3: Foooooood - One New Meal Each Week

I thought I was going to have to skip this one, but in the end I needed to come up with a dessert, so I went with a brownie recipe I have used before and added in coconut flakes and caramel sauce.  Ghostlet didn't like it very much because he didn't think it was sweet enough, but I got positive feedback from others.  This coming week I am going to try and make a Thanksgiving/Christmas type dinner.  Ideally I want to make stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, candied yams, pumpkin pie, apple pie and jello.  I have leftover turkey and dinner rolls, so if I can make all of these, it will be a super feast.  Time to start gathering up ingredients...

 

Mission 4: Do a Good Turn Daily

This one is not going as well as I had hoped, but probably as well as I expected.  I am able to find something small each day to help people, but usually it is stuff I would have been doing anyway.  I am not overly concerned about this, because the key was to change my mindset so that I am always on the lookout for opportunities to help.  Even if I don't see anything, it helps me to be mindful of others, which then helps me to be more patient and understanding.  If that turns into an opportunity to actually help someone in need, all the better :)

also wanted to add that yes, you would want to hold your backpack in front of you to do goblet squats. i can hit much lower depth with a "counter weight" in front of my body (goblets, front squats)

That would work if I was actually making progress in the other areas :D I will likely do something similar to the Hardcore, Hardcore approach that  @DarK_RaideR and @Teros are doing for an upcoming challenge

Update as of Tuesday Morning

Did my around the world upper body workout this morning.  I changed the order to back->up->front->down which worked much better.  By the time I was finished, my whole upper body was completely burned out, but especially the tops of my arms (upper heads of the bicep and tricep).

Stretching was good again.  I didn't do any workout Sunday or Monday so I was surprised that I woke up sore this morning.  Apparently my stretching is giving me a meaningful workout.  I feel it mostly in my inner thighs and lower traps.  The thighs are from the splits but I am not sure what is working the traps.  It makes sense that it would be from the shoulder stretches, but I think it may also be from my forward folds.  I noticed when I tried to do front leg kicks/lifts I could feel it in my neck so I suspect my tightness in that stretch is going through my traps.

I plan to do a holiday spread this week so I need to get cracking on finding the ingredients.  Many of them are not going to be available in the stores near me so I may need to buy them online.  I will be heading over to the east side of town tomorrow, so I will check some of the expat supermarkets to see if they have anything there first.

Not much to report on the good deeds front.  This morning I held the gate to our complex open for a bit so that a couple of people riding bikes did not have to stop and get off, so I will count that for today.

I was going to talk about this but Greg and Mad Hatter kinda hit this one on the head. Depth is always a flexibility issue for me. Mostly in my ankles. I've noticed rolling my feet on a lacrosse ball or something like that has helped with my ankles.

Yeah....stupid flexibility. It's a gradual game for sure but one that I think pays off more in the end than anything else. I'm curious to see measurements at the end of the challenge :)
