J3NN Doesn't let the Holidays Slow Her Down

J3NN

Recommended Posts

This looks like a lot in writing, but it's really a lot of explanation, and only a few things that are really being measured.

  • Holiday season bucket list - It's important to me to enjoy the holidays and not get swept away by the commercialism. Here's a list of things I really want to do over the holidays:
    • Go to the Mission Inn for our annual family night out and wandering through the most awesome consignment/thrift store
    • Go see Christmas Lights (possible at the Auto Speedway)
    • Host a Build Gingerbread "things" night with the Kessel run Club
    • Make cookies
    • Decorate (this is a challenge with three young cats, still trying to figure out what this will look like
  • Fitness
    • By the end of the challenge work up up three circuits with warmup/cool-down
      • Workout every Tues/Thurs and once on the weekend
        • Week zero gets a pass since it’s a holiday week and we’re traveling, anything done this week is just bonus
    • Increase walking
      • My current average is 3011 steps/day. I want to increase that to 4000 steps per day this challenge (average week 1-4)
      • Amerithon monthly total, 60 miles recorded
  • Nutrition
    • Long term: Work up to 2 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups vegetables per day
    • This challenge: 1 cup of fruit and 2 cups of vegetables per day
  • LUYL
    • Milestones to accomplish for my short story
      • Finish revisions
      • Round 1 (first read through)
      • Round 2 (10% solution)
      • Round 3 (another read through)
      • Submit to Critters (there’s a waiting list, I will submit by the end of the challenge, but I may not work my way up to critiques in the challenge)
    • Complete one critique per week to earn my own critique (5 critiques)
    • Find a workbook/daily reader to replace my Rituals for Transition workbook which finishes on Dec. 21.
    • Complete the Design Your Destiny planning to identify focus for 2018
      • Four worksheets to be completed
        • Action plan for 2018 goals that I can manage with my NF challenges

I have some optional stuff too, in Spoiler to keep it cleaner.

Spoiler

Optional:

  • When I’m done with revisions, start to explore fan-fic to see how I can use it to build the skills I struggle with (listed below, may change)
    • Dialog
    • Action
    • Point of view
  • Think about starting blog newsletter in the style of Tim Ferris’ five bullet Friday.
    • Do reflective writing on the pros
    • Do reflective writing on the cons
    • Do reflective writing on what the newsletter could look like
    • Do reflecting writing on what the commitment would look like and any sacrifices that may be necessary
  • Think about a new story idea (either original or fan-fic) to uase as writing goal in January’s challenge
    • Use brainstorming ideas from class “Idea to Draft” to brainstorm a list
      • FanFic idea: Crossover Scorpion/Supernatural - The Scorpion Halloween episode had them ghost hunting and being filmed on a show called "Ghost Grabbers" and it had a Scooby Doo reference. It seems like a natural fit, it's about time Sam and Dean came to California.
    • Sit with different ideas to see which resonate
    • Do some research about different ideas

And as always, here's my Tracker because I like the ease of tracking there, but I'll give updates here.

I didn't have the energy to theme this, so I'm just going to use all the Holiday meme's!

Idk, you say it's just a lot of writing but it looks like you have a lot of actual stuff going on. You have a holiday bucket list, two exercise goals, a nutrition goal, and four LUYL goals. I'm sure you can do it all, but don't sell yourself short! It's a lot! You can reasonably feel very accomplished as you keep up with all of this stuff. :)

I approve the holiday memes.

Ha, yes, I had this with my 2 Norwegian Forest (i.e. huge) cats, when they were younger and more flexible (now there's only one 15 year-old left and he can barely jump onto the sofa)

Good luck with your challenge! :D

Hey J3nn

The list looks great. I feel you on the decorating. I have Agent Black, the parkour kitty this year. We are still wondering how much we can get done with him being... at kitten. I am following to see how it goes.

Hi all,

Off to a bad start, but, ready to do this anyway. After the holiday traveling the allergies were acting up so bad I felt sick. I'm still not sure if I had/have a cold, or if it's just remnants from the allergies... So yesterday was all sleeping and watching the Harry Potter marathon. I literally got nothing done. But, I feel better today, so I'm at work, and going to count today as the challenge start, so we'll see how that goes.

With no groceries (since I did nothing yesterday) scrounging for breakfast and lunch today means it's going to be a challenge to meet my freggie goals, but I can squeeze more in dinner if I have to.

My back is hurting, it's been working it's way back to being in pain, so tonight I'm going to find some stretches. It's not the high back/neck pain like normal, it's at the bottom few ribs of my rib cage, so that's new. If anyone has any videos or stretches for that region, please send me way! Thanks in advance!

Also, not sure I want to replace my workbook now that I'm reflecting on it, so that is something I'm going to spend time thinking on.

So yeah, starting fresh (ish) a little late, but I'm here.

Glad to hear you're feeling better today, hope it holds! I have no suggestions for lower-mid back pain other than the usual cat/cow yoga poses. :/ Good luck.

I am sorry you were not feeling well, Hopefully you continue to feel better. I do understand the "find something in the house and go" issue. Hopefully you found something that worked well for the day.

This is where i get my back stretches from. The knee to chest one works, but is more for almost hip issues.  https://www.webmd.com/back-pain/ss/slideshow-exercises

This sounds like a great idea for Agent Black. So far the tree is up (no lights or ornaments) and all he is messing with is the tree skirt. I am sure that will change.

Updates:

Holiday season bucket list Considering the Newport Beach boat parade as the Christmas Lights
Fitness
Workout Not yet, but, Doctor appointment today was good excuse to miss
steps/day Currently at 3766, I'll get to 4k before bed
Nutrition
1C fruit & 2 C vegetables /day apple,  lasagna made with veggies (butternut squash, zucchini, tomatoes); roasted vegetables and more squash
LUYL
Design Your Destiny planning Have the first worksheet, it's reflection about this year. Hoping to do a little, but not holding my breath

I had a doctor's appointment today. At my physical last month the PA I saw because my doc was out suggested that we more proactively manage my lymphedema. He suggested starting small by adding a water pill to my medications. He's starting me at a super low dose with the addition of compression socks. So, tomorrow we start this. He said to plan to be in the bathroom A LOT. I already go, a lot, so I'm curious and a bit anxious about what that's going to look like. I bought a pair of compression socks too, just to test. Typically because my calf size is so large due to the swelling (22") most socks won't fit me unless they're the special wide cuff stretchy diabetic socks. So I'm going to have to do some research to see what I can find. He said it may not do much, or it could do a lot, so we'll see how it goes. Usually by this time of year I'm seeing that my swelling has decreased, but I haven't seen that this year. I'd like to be able to wear my wedding ring and to have my pants not look like they're painted on... and not in the sexy way. Here's hoping this is the first step on a good journey! I will be increasing my potassium and sodium to help balance the fluid/mineral loss, so it will be interesting to see how that works too. Luckily I already like and eat bananas, kale, spinach and OJ! I've "suffered" with this my whole life, and this is the first time I've taken any proactive steps except one scary visit a LONG time ago. I'm a little nervous. Afraid to get my hopes up...and afraid the side effects won't be worth the benefit. But then again, more trips to the bathroom means more steps everyday, so there is that! :)

Here's my update:

Holiday season bucket list Scheduled all the things I can schedule and sent out feelers to the Kessel Run Club to schedule the Gingerbread party
Fitness
Workout I need a kick in the pants. This week has been bad. I skipped Tuesday because everything with the doctor took it out of me and I was late because of the appointment. I skipped last night because I was having really bad cramps. I skipped tonight because I don't wanna. But I really do wanna. I just don't wanna when I feel like this. "This" = brain dead, crampy and headachy.
steps/day Today was good, I had 4,000 before I got home; My average isn't good though, it's just over 2500.
Nutrition
1C fruit & 2 C vegetables /day I'm rocking this with no problem. It was probably too easy of a goal, but prior to this I wasn't getting in my freggies, so it counts that I'm actually eating them now. Especially with it about to be cookie season!
LUYL
Finish revisions
Round 1
Round 2 I did this on Monday. When I'm doing it, I feel it, I'm enjoying the process, I'm learning, I'm making my story better. But when I'm not, it's been hard for me to make myself do this on weeknights, and weekends is harder unless my hubby is working which is only 2 days a month. So at this rate, it's going to take me forever. I am trying to decide how I feel about that. It's not like I wanted to quit my job and become a novelist, but I thought I would be more consumed by the desire to write or work on my story regularly.
Round 3
Submit to Critters
Complete one critique/week I got sent new manuscripts, so I can pick the next story to crit.
Design Your Destiny planning I haven't touched this except for answering the first two questions in a very high level fashion. I hope to work on this tomorrow since I get off work early.

One other thing that my healthcare provider had me do is start drinking sole. I had never heard of it, basically it's a Himalayan salt water infusion. You drink a little a day to help you get minerals and to help you absorb things better. There are a TON of benefits talked about on a few blog posts I found. Here's one example: How to make sole (disclaimer, I haven't researched this blog to confirm if it's a reputable source). And another Make Sole (this one actually references a study done at a University, so it has some credibility). I wondered if anyone on here has heard of sole or if they have any experience with it??

This sounds interesting. I am curious ihow this goes. I may need it since I know with my acid reflux sometimes my absorption of things isn't the best.

As far as your challenge. I understand the crampy headache thing and the don't wanna. I think your doing great even with that. "Hugs" Keep going.

I used sole for something like 6-7 months some years ago (when going through IVF, it was supposed to help with fertility).  I didn't notice any particular benefits, but I love my (pink Himalayan and grey Celtic) salt anyway, especially now, with keto and fasting.  Nowadays, though, I prefer to melt a few crystals directly on my tongue and chase them up with a glass of fresh water.  Disclaimer: I'm not aware of any absorption issues as such.

Hope the water pills work for you!

Thanks, it's only been three days, but I'm noticing the swelling in my hands is a little less, and yesterday when I put on some boots it was a "little" easier than normal and at the end of the day, the compression of those boots seemed to have really made a noticeable difference. Of course, by morning gravity and all that made it all back to normal. But it's a start nonetheless. I took measurements the first day, so I'll measure at the week mark and see if there's anything noticeable there.

Holiday season bucket list Decided to put our tree outside, so we got a tree! We decorated the house and yard with lights, but still have to decorate the tree.
Fitness
Workout I worked out on Sunday! I did two circuits and I did warmup and stretches after.
steps/day I'm on target for 4k today and my average is up to 3580, so I'm inching up, slowly but surely.
Nutrition
1C fruit & 2 C vegetables /day I learned that my weekend routine doesn't let me remember this necessarily so I need to get beter at this. Tonight we had dinner out and even thought it was $5 (!) I ordered a side of vegetables to supplement my dinner. They were incredibily tasty grilled zucchini, squash and spinach with a few pieces of red pepper. It was worth the $5, even though it's not really. Then we had ice cream for dsesert and I didn't feel guilty, and there was even fruit in my icecream. Cherries are fruit right?
LUYL
Finish revisions I am doing a bad job of this. It's more time consuming than I allowed for... but I need to get back on this.
Round 1
Round 2 I haven't worked on it in over a week. I did use the skills of 10% to edit something else I wrote this week but it doesn't count for my ms revisions.
Round 3
Submit to Critters
Complete one critique/week I finished the crit tonight. I had to do it in two sittings and that affected my feeling about the story. I'm not sure if that means I should read all of them in two sittings or if I should try to read them in a single sitting.
Design Your Destiny planning I did my reflection, and I actually posted about this in another group so I'll copy that in a spoiler. I also started brainstorming goals for next year in six areas of life which I can use to shape my challenges next year. I'm enjoying this and wish I had made more time to work on it.

Spoiler

Hi everyone, I wanted to share another experience. Although it’s not specifically healthy focused, it has helped me with my personal healthy focus. Last year I went through, what I call a workshop called, Design Your Destiny (DYD) led by a blogger named Kim Job. She covers many topics: bullet journal, goal setting and measuring, hand lettering, journaling, clean eating and more. When she posted this workshop last year I was intrigued. With a free price tag, I signed up. Each week she sent out a pdf worksheet and email with exercises. You create a word for the year, plan SMART goals in the typical “life wheel” areas, learn how to break your goals down and measure them so you make continual progress throughout the year.
Last year I went through the workshop for the first time and at the end I created my word of the year (Delight) and I set goals in 11 areas. Eleven seems like overkill, and it was. In my annual review I learned I completed/focused on five goals and for six others, I did little to nothing.
I have to confess, after all my great plans, after mid-February, I didn’t look at my goals again. I didn’t track it, I didn’t work towards them, it was like I had never set goals at all. Except it wasn’t. Because, somehow, I accomplished five goals I set.
I’ve learned:
1. Your subconscious has a more impact than you think.
2. Track your goals. It’s the difference between success or failure.
3. What you think is important today could change in a year, don’t be afraid to let go of a goal you thought you wanted if it isn’t a good fit.
4. There are many ways to set goals, measure progress and track your success. Try until you find the right one for you.
If you’re interested (disclaimer: it may be too late to sign up for the workshop) here’s the link http://sublimereflection.com/design-destiny-2018/. I’m happy to share the worksheets if you can’t get them.
My other success is the Nerd Fitness four-week challenge format which I now I use to set my long term goals and roadmap for the year. I’m curious to see what next year brings. I look forward to share with you and watch your successes too!

Now I'm just tired, it's been a long week at work and it's only Wednesday. Going to watch some Pentatonix and lurk in other threads and chill.

Oh, and you can still sign up, so I have 2 weeks to catch up on ;)

I've got a grid that shows the year with the challenges for next year so I can look at the big picture and plan my goals challenge by challenge. I didn't have that last year and I think that if I consciously connect it to the challenges I will be much better about balancing and staying on track and leveling up regularly. I'm excited about the prospect.

Let me know if you want the grid, it's in Google Sheets.

Holiday season bucket list Decorated tree, as much as we're going to, and added some safe indoor decor too, so we're in the holiday spirit now. We did visit the Mission Inn Festival of Lights. Not once, but twice. It was so packed the first night we didn't stop. Went back early the next night to enjoy it. Then we made our Gingerbread creations. It was fun to get together with the Kessel Run Club, and I have news! The day we got together we received our shipment which included this year's coffee table book for GISHWHES, our Kessel Run photo made it in the book!!! Woo hoo, we achieved our goal! And we got to celebrate together. It was awesome!
Fitness
Workout I have given up on this. My gym has been taken over, again. I tweaked my back again too. So I'm focusing on my steps instead.
steps/day My average is up to 3,798, my goal was 4,000 so I'm getting closer. I feel bad because I used to easily be able to do 10,000 steps a day. I have no idea what happened, but I'm steadily trying to work back to that. My Amerithon miles total is 43.14 and I wanted 60 so I'm 72% of the way and 65% through the challenge. But I think I wasn't counting week 0, oops. Hmm.
Nutrition
1C fruit & 2 C vegetables /day I've been pretty good on this, but have found a few times when it was a struggle.
LUYL
Finish revisions I haven't done revisions since 11/27. Things have been in the way so my writing group hasn't met, and I haven't been doing it on the weekends because holiday bucket list and design your destiny, so I've accepted that I haven't made as much progress. I'm trying to decide if I want to let myself slide and push this to the January challenge. I don't have a lot of time off for the holidays so it's not like I can catch up then. I did discover that the anthology has decided to do a second volume so I can still submit it, but I don't know how long I'll have, so that little pressure is motiviating me some.
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Submit to Critters I had set the goal by the end of the challenge, but that doesn't feel likely.
Complete one critique/week I am staying up on my critiques so that when I do submit I can actually get my manuscript in the queue to be sent out.
Design Your Destiny planning

I am enjoying this, but I am struggling because I had a new opportunity come up. So I'm looking at my list trying to decide what I want to sacrifice to do this new thing, if anything. It's been interesting to be able to have my plan and my grid to view the entire year to see what I think is actually reasonable. This week I'm supposed to be breaking down my goals, but I'm almost revisiting all my goals completely because of this new opportunity.

And last but not least, I have to share amazing news! Huntington's breakthrough may stop disease. My mother and grandmother both died from Huntington's. I'm one of those descendants that has a 50% chance of developing the disease, and if I do, then my daughter has the same chance. I've been watching news stories like this for more than 20 years and this is the best news yet! Praying that this makes it through all the steps that are between here and a cure!

It's really making me think about my goals and year and ways to accomplish the things I want. Maybe for once I'll see how not to bite off more than I can chew!

Thanks for sharing this. These are awesome. I may be stealing them.

Sorry I didn't get over here yesterday. Things were... eventful. Anyway,  that is great news on the Huntington's breakthrough. I totally understand the significance to your family. I have 2 nieces with SMA, and last Christmas the FDA finally approved a treatment for the disease that is showing some amazing results. One has been given the treatment and is showing an amazing amount of progress.

AS far as your goals,  I think accepting that now is not a time to be working out is a good idea if you messed up your back. Focus on the steps and do what you can. The last thing you want is to hurt yourself further. Good luck deciding on the new opportunity. I am sure you will make the right choice.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother and grandmother. :( But what wonderful news otherwise...I hope it through! :)

Thanks for this, it's similar to a template I already use, but better!

Great news about the Huntington's disease breakthrough!
