Big Show: Chapter Five - Hitting the Road Again

Recommended Posts

Hey nerds!

I have been rehabbing my ankle and it seems like it's finally time to start running again!  I have worked my way back from the Reading half-marathon (in March) and calculated that if I increase my weekly long-run gradually by a mile per week, it still leaves space for a couple of 15 mile runs and a two week taper.  So that's the plan!

Therefore as well as my regular training goals (see custom challenge mechanics in the next post) I have my priorities for this challenge (I shall make them more SMART before the actual beginning of the challenge):

1) Don't eat like an arsehole - particularly unscheduled snacks.  I make flimsy excuses, and it just plain needs to stop.

2) Only drink on one school night per week - since we moved in together wine tends to be happening more often, so I need to reign things in a bit.

3) Do your damn yoga - exactly what it says on the tin.  7mins yoga every day (as a bare minimum) helps stop me getting injured.

4) Read books on the train - I spend to long trawling social media and playing pointless games (damn you Bounzy Ball!) while also complaining I have no time to read books.  So I shall start taking one to work with me, giving me at least half an hour of protected reading time per weekday.

This weekend I am away down to That London with the Welshman so I'll be kicking things off on Monday, but I'm very excited to be finally getting back to proper training & racing!

Good to have you along mate!

This evening I sorted stuff out and packed for the weekend away.  I also posted in an NFA group on FB about my respawn and gathered several other people looking to respawn too, so further accountabilibuddies have been gained.  See you all on Monday for my Day 1!

Hey nerds, I'm back!

Had a fantastic weekend away with The Welshman - Winter Wonderland on Sunday was particularly amazing!  Lots of food & drink was consumed, but now it's time to get properly back to work.

So today:  I ate only the food I took with me to work!  This is an achievement.  Also, my train home was cancelled and during the half hour wait for the next one I bought myself a coffee instead of a beer!  I also used the time to read through the next Mindset Module in my NFA respawn.  Help me get the basics correct from the outset once again, rather than just assuming I am and instead building on a shaky foundation .

My ankle has been sore all day (possibly from all the walking over the weekend?  We hit a minimum of 25k+ steps each day.) so instead of doing the gym after work I came home and did the full Water A session instead.  Hopefully I shall eventually become some kind of supple leopard/bear hybrid..

Over the weekend I finished the book I was reading (The Regional Office is Under Attack!) and so on the way home today I started on rereading Foundation with a view to finally working my way through the entire series.  I don't think I ever made it past the second one before, and I've always wondered where Asimov went with it all.

The rest of the evening has been spent catching up with general miscellanous adulting, however I have had an annoying tickly cough/sore throat all day so I'm taking tonight as my schoolnight's drinking for the week and having a couple of single malts.  They always seem to help when I have a sore throat.

Today's score

+1XP for foam-rolling

+2XP for Water A session

+1XP for Trapfinding

+1XP for Strict Rations (no extra food)

+1XP for reading on the way home

I recently started using audible for listening to audiobooks instead of reading, I'm getting through the books much faster and am more inclined to "read" them when I don't have to "read" them!

I eventually realised that the cause of 90% of my injuries is rooted in mobility & flexibility issues, and this is a good approach for mitigating that risk. And even if not, more flexibility in general probably can't hurt, right?

I listen to tonnes of podcasts while out walking, sometimes I just like having an actual physical book to work through.

Sounds like you had a great weekend. What do they have at Winter Wonderland? I've heard a few people mention it, but I figured it was more of a family with kids thing so I wasn't planning on going.

it has been a decent day - still got an annoying cough/sore throat thingy but it's not on my chest so I was find to hit the gym after work for today's training session:

- 5min row

- 5x deadlifts

- 5x5 superset assisted pull-ups/dips

- 3x circuit of 7 reps: burpees/lunges/press-ups/squats

- 15min cross-trainer

Did the Touch Your Toes yoga mini-session this evening in amongst catching up on the rest of my adulting from the weekend.

Read another few chapters of Foundation on the train home - that 20mins is just flying by now I have reading material!

Not really got anything else to add - I'm sure interesting stuff must have happened, but my brain is kinda foggy and wants sleep.  Damn winter bugs.

Friday was deliberately a write-off from the outset - knackered from work & the bug I was fighting all week, plus we had a buffet lunch in the office as it was someone's last day.  That evening was spent on the sofa with a bottle of wine, followed by a whisky or two with a rather drunken Welshman who was on a night out with people from his office.

Saturday was a fun day!  We went off to do a 5k Santa Run, which also included 10 massive inflatable obstacles en route!  We walk/ran a lot of it, as the Welshman is not really a runner and I hadn't run at all since the 5th of November.  But we still got round in just over half an hour and had a lot of fun doing so (while dressed as Santa!) so it was definitely a good day!

After that we put up our first Christmas tree.  Photos of all of this will follow soon via Tapatlk.

Sunday was a day spent visiting family.  Not much of anything else got done, hence there being no further score updates for the day.

Monday was the beginning of a new week!  Still working through the quests in the NF Academy - currently trying to Customise My Batcave to aid healthy habits and hinder bad ones, but struggling to come up with ideas for things.  All suggestions very welcome!

Now over halfway through Foundation on my home commute reading.  WIsh I had more time to read it - need to find more downtime during the week!

After work today I changed at the gym (they have showers and our boiler is still dodgy) and went for my first proper run in four weeks!  Kept it nice & slow, and focussed on technique - got to make sure I don't reinjure myself again.  Just a little out & back along the river but it felt good to be back out there again - 2.5M in 21:09 @ 8:16/mile pace, which is much faster than I though!  Not complaining, obviously :)

This evening I cooked us bacon burgers that I had previously frozen (and they taste so good!) which rounded off a bit of an awkward day - my head has been stupid at me all day, and I've been seeing all the most negative scenarios for anything that crops up as totally inevitable.  Which is silly.  But there's something about coming home to a nice house and having a homecooked meal together that wipes a lot of that out :)

Tuesday has been a good day!  Or so I am choosing to believe.

For starters, my first weekly weigh-in has me down 2lbs despite not being perfect with my diet (see above) and also being unable to do my preferred level of exercise.  Need to properly stick at it to keep this up though - this current rate of progress puts me a whole eight weeks away from buying a Switch.  I don't want to wait that long...

That said, I did dip repeatedly into the box of Celebrations that appeared in the office today.  Those Malteasers in particular are my kryptonite...

Read a bit more of Foundation again on the way home.  Might start reading on the way in to work as well if I can remember to in time.

Somehow over the weekend I have managed to injure both my right shoulder and my left wrist, not through any kind of fun activity though.  This has unfortunately put paid to any weights for the week, and it also stopped me in my tracks when I attempted Yoga today.  Foam-rolled and did some general stretching instead.

Apart from that, nothing much has happened - I've had the house to myself, so after this is finished (the last thing on my To Do list!) I shall be going upstairs and restarting Skyrim!  Hopefully with more success this time round - I am not the best at video games, as fun as I find them!

Know, O prince, that once the sun burns out and the earth's core becomes solid and cold, there will come a man to provide the endless energy needed to sustain life and for the planets to keep moving. Audible is the best thing since sliced bread! I frequently listen and have a few books in my queue that I'm excited about :)

I know, I wish I had chance to make proper use of it!  But I'm falling behind with my podcasts as it is!

Well done on the 8:16 pace for your first proper time out in a while! I bet you can get that well under 8 min before the New Year hits. #SwiftHunter

Well at the moment I'm just lookinng at rebuilding the volume very gradually before worrying about pace.  But if the plan goes well I'll be back up to 7M for my first long run of the new year, and by February I should be able to start looking at doing basic speedwork again.  At this point I can't believe I used to run half-marathons at sub-7:00/mile pace; hell, I can't believe I ran a 5k at that pace!  But with time & patience  all things are possible...

Wednesday started well - we decorated the office for Christmas!  I, of course, had to do all the high up bits.  I did dip into the chocolates again today - really need to get a handle on that.

In better news, by my calculations I am 12% of the way towards my Switch.  Once I figured out this number it stopped me eating snacks again.  Yay motivation!

On the way home I read more of Foundation (tick!), and then I stopped off at the gym to get changed for my run (today they finally started work on replacing our boiler).  I did the same route as on Monday, although my GPS apparently didn't get a proper satellite lock for the first little section.

It all felt good again, and then I stretched & foam-rolled afterwards.  After these two good runs I now feel safe attempting a whole 5k at the weekend - hopefully by then my shoulder & wrist will be back to normal so I can yoga properly as well!  The recorded section of this one was 2.2M in 19:38 @ 8:36/mile pace.

Thursday was a bit of a write-off for the challenge stuff; the Welshman had a rough day at work so I met him in the pub after work and bought him dinner.  Then whisky also occurred, and very little else productive...

Friday was similar - but got back from work to the lovely news that the workmen had finally finished replacing our boiler, so we finally have a nice warm house again!  Over three weeks of very sporadic heat & hot water is finally over!  Dinner was a takeaway chippy tea, and we drank wine & watched more Inhumans.

I also finished Foundation - now moving on to The Last of the Renshai.  Haven't read this book in a very long time, and judging by the size of it I may need to devote more than just my commute home to it!

Saturday was a day spent clearing stuff off my To Do list.  Also involved drinking rum-spiced mulled cider at a christmas market in town before lunchtime, so I fugure that practically makes us pirates.  Christmassy pirates.

Went for dinner with my parents in the evening, then watched Moana, drank wine, and played 90's Trivial Pursuit.  A good day.

Sunday saw my respawn really kick itself into gear - snow cancelled run (first time I've seen snow in 4 years, what with living in a desert and everything!) so I did the long Yin Yoga Stretching video and will be running tomorrow after work.  I had to rearrange my plans for next week as I'm meeting my Dad after work on Thursday now, so it kinda lines up nicely to be honest.  My shoulder is taking its time to get better unfortunately, so it looks like this week is going to be entirely running & yoga based.

I also finished working my way through the Mindset quests again in the NF Academy, and started on the Nutrition ones.  This is most definitely my stumbling point, so it'll be good to lay the foundations of a healthy diet once again.

Speaking of which, a nice healthy lamb stew is about to finish in the Instant Pot so I should go eat it!
