HI EVERYBODY

*does an Indiana Jones roll under the closing door of Challenge Week 1*

I made it I made it I made it

There's a lot of stuff going on, as I'm sure we're all living with this time of year. I'm keeping it super simple this month. No points, not much of a theme, but I know if I don't get on the boards and keep checking in with you all, I'll just lose focus entirely.

GOALS:

  • Work out 3 times a week -- strength routine, kickboxing class, cardio session, any of those (or equivalent) count.
  • Bring fruit to work every day, stay out of cube neighbor's candy dish.
  • Meditate every day.
  • Write a little every day, even if it's just 500 words or so

More soon. Thanks for being on board!

So, I am realizing that I'm feeling some depression and anxiety again lately, and it's hitting me square in the motivation and I'm not staying as active as I had regularly been for the past few months. Guess what helps with my depression and anxiety? Physical activity. So I've been kind of shooting myself in the foot by letting my routine slip away.

Here are some things:

I broke my meditation streak last weekend for the first time in over a year. That's okay, it's not all or nothing, and I'm doing well about picking it back up since then.

We are dealing with some trouble with our very old second car, to the point that I don't feel comfortable driving it to and from evening workout classes. I think evening kickboxing classes will have to go away for the most part, at least for a few months. After the holidays we're going to think about a plan to replace it.

I'm doing a good bit of travel in the coming month. We're going to NYC for a week a couple of weeks from now, and the usual visit to family in Florida for a week or so around the holidays. (I will get to meet @karinajean soon!) While we're in New York, I'll have the hotel gym and plenty of time to work out, and I want to do a run in Central Park just for its own sake.

I'm stressed about holiday shopping and money.

My phone died on Saturday night and I've been without a phone for three days. (My new one arrives tonight.) I'm irritated by how much I miss it! Mostly I miss my podcasts. I'm also keenly aware of being out of touch while I'm out and about -- like worrying about the car breaking down.

It's day 28 of NaNoWriMo and I've written 36,000 words so far this month. I'm going to try to keep chipping away at it over the next month. I've figured out what I need to work on, at least. :)

Thanks! I feel really good about it. I used to write fiction for fun, and when I was younger I wanted to be a professional writer. Now I occasionally get paid to write, but it's not fun stuff. It was time. And this is way more words of fiction than I've written in a long, long time. And it's fun.

Me too! I haven't forgotten that we need to arrange a day. I am waiting for Ms Rogue to have her work schedule in order, so I know when I'll be solo. (Not that you can't meet her as well if it works out, but she has minimal free time on this trip so I'm trying to be a thoughtful partner and schedule my own stuff while she's otherwise occupied.) I will message you this week for sure.

I am very glad my phone broke (if it had to break) with enough time to replace it before the trip. I'd have had to pick up a burner at the drugstore or something.

It has historically sometimes been a difficult time of year for me too. I think between money pressure, being busier than I want to, probably a little bit of seasonal affective stuff as the light wanes, and so on, it's just chipping away at my defenses a little. Half the battle is spotting it happening to me, which sounds easy? But is not always?

Hey everybody! I am fine. All is well here. I've had a difficult and tiring few days, that's all. Thanks so much. I appreciate you all a great deal.

I got out for a long walk break this afternoon, the first time I've done anything active since Saturday, and I'm intending to take a gym break tomorrow afternoon. (I'm not sure if I'll do strength or cardio, but either one is better than nothing. :) )

Heyyyyy everybody, guess who made it to the gym on Thursday for the first time this week? I just did a simple bodyweight routine, pushups, pullups, vertical leg lifts for core, and squats.

It looks like my work gym is shutting down bit by bit for renovations between now and the holiday break, so I'm going to have to do more home workouts, but honestly I'm only at work for ... jeez, a total of eight workdays before break, so it probably doesn't matter all that much.

It's the last day of NaNoWriMo, and I've managed to write 38,000 and some words this month. I feel pretty great about this. More if anybody's interested:

Spoiler

I haven't written any fiction in a long long time, and I've had a lot of fun working on this this month. I am notably running out of steam at this point and have probably only managed to write a few hundred words a day this week.

I think a good bit of the reason for that is that I didn't outline the whole thing beforehand, and so I've written most of the chapters that I already had in my head. Slowing down to figure out plot as I go has been hampering me on the back half of the month. There's a lot of talk in NNWM materials about don't worry about it, figure it out as you go, and I'm realizing that that doesn't work out super well for me. Next time I try this I'll have at least a rough start-to-finish outline.

Things I'm confident about: writing dialogue, creating characters.

Things I'm not confident about: worldbuilding, describing clothing and faces, writing fight scenes, writing sex scenes.

I'm going to keep working on this a little at a time! I figure it'll take 100,000 words before I'm done. I'm glad I made the experiment.

Hey, tomorrow's Friday! So that's cool.

Congrats on the wrimo-ing! I realized reading your list of things you're not good at that many of them are things I've never even attempted... like, describing someone's face/clothing? Somehow just avoided it entirely! I think I tried to write a fight scene once and then gave up on the story instead. Good on you for using it to figure out your weaknesses!

I think nano is great for a lot of things but working on your weaknesses is not one of them, because when you're pouring out that many words, the ones that come out are going to be the ones that are easiest for you to write. That's actually one thing I like about it, that it tends to reveal a lot about my mental state and current preoccupations because I can't not write what's on my mind. Thus I find the idea of allowing anyone to read my nano, let alone attempting to publish it, as lots of my people in my region seem to be aiming to do, actively horrifying :P

Anyway, congrats and good luck in the continuation of it!

I almost immediately realized that I didn't know how to do these things well, so I tried to sort of poke at them a little. I also bookmarked some articles about "how to do X well" to look at over the next few months. I'm trying to make a point of having a range of non-white characters, so I need to do a little bit with describing appearances. It's a fantasy novel in a world that's soooort of 18th-century in its trappings, and I've got characters assuming various false identities, so I need to talk about what low-class v upper-class clothing is like, and they're all criminals who carry knives and swords around, so, fights!
