I've had this large subcutaneous cyst on the back of my shoulder for 2 weeks and it's getting super fucking annoying (and extremely painful- like a knife when any pressure is applied). It's right where the bar sits for squatting and ALSO right where my shoulder make contact with the bench when bench pressing. I had to be "one of those people" the other day and use a doubled up towel on the bench for padding.

 

Anyway... long story made short... I'd had enough, so I performed home surgery and removed it - (very challenging when you have to do everything while using a mirror)... Injected local anaesthetic, made an incision, got the goo out and taped it all back together... fairly neat job considering. Now just waiting for the anaesthetic to wear off to see how painful it is...

 

 

LIFTING: 11/24 (Need 20)  + 3 PR's

PROTEIN: 12/24 (Need 20)

GOOD FOOD: 17/42 (Need 30)

BRO SESH: 2/6

I'm betting on getting stronger, although it could be both. I don't think my body being all "hey, wait, whattheheck are we doing here?" and strongering are mutually exclusive, they seem to go together in my life more than not.

You should have recorded the whole affair and uploaded it to social media. Dr Pimple popper and others have made these things grossly popular.

So... home surgery update 1:

 

Everything is great... I was waiting for some pain when the xylocaine wore off... but nope, all good. Did a good job, incision is nice and neat, and benching later today should proceed as planned...

Sat 13th Jan

Week Three Day Six

 

Morning:

Nope... Did some outdoor work

 

Lifting:

 

Comp Bench: singles at 105kg and 110kg, 98 kg x 5, 5, 5

Spd Bench vs 12kg bands: 9 triples at 75kg

 

Then, commercial gym for:

DB Bench: 8's at 20kg, 22.5kg and 25 kg (2 sets)

Lat pulldowns: 3 x 10 @ 52kg

Shitloads of pushdowns, curls and hammer curls

 

Food:

Still good. Much chicken, very salad...

 

Rambling:

Bench felt amazing after my home surgery efforts.

 

Russian:

Had another lesson today... Mrs Blocky and I feel lost and confused BUT Olga (our Russian teacher) says we are doing well and our pronunciation is excellent.

Confession. I have maybe a sort of sick fascination with cyst type stuff. Sometimes I go down the you tube rabbit hole of what Mr Red calls "puss porn," but I blame him entirely and his farmers ears... I never would have known about any of it if it weren't my task to keep his biz at bay. Which I did too well... now I get nothin. Hopefully yours won't fill up again! And if you got video... well...

I left the incision open instead of stitching it closed and a bit more goo came out over the next 24 hours, but now it's healed and gone forever.

Morning:

Nope... had 2 clients before work....

 

Lifting:

 

Squat vs 12kg band tension: top single of 160kg + 12bands - this is a significant improvement over the last 6 weeks.

Comp Squats: 130kg for 5, 5, 3, 2 - ran out of gas to string the last to sets together... but still a new 5RM (up 10kg in 6 weeks)

 

Food:

Lots of meat today... Yay!

 

Rambling:

Operation Sensible Blocky

Wed 17th Jan

Week Four Day Three

 

Morning:

Yes... played around with some light 'Hatfield Squats' with the safety squat bar, then did some KB swings and cycling. Also got some conditioning done yesterday - it's fading from my brain but I think it was Back extensions, KB swings and jumprope.

 

Lifting:

 

Bench vs 10kg bands: singles at 110kg and 112.5kg - 5kg under my PR but considering I've had the 6 weeks with a broken shoulder, I'm happy with where this is.

Comp Bench: 3 x 5 at 100kg. This is getting hard and my 5RM for this is only 102.5.

Did 4 giant sets of:

 

6 pullups with the green band

8 upright rows with 20-25kg

10 reclining rows on TRX

12 KB OHP with the 8kg and 12kg bells (2 sets with each)

 

Then for shits and grins and to see how good my shoulder was, I did 55 pushups total over various sets and reps

 

Food:

All good.

 

Rambling:

No.

i just gotta say, you seem pretty happy. i don't know how long i've been following your challenges but i feel like the tone of your updates has changed tremendously. it's really awesome to see! also, i hope i'm right and that you are pretty happy (besides that one time your whole family stayed over your house for christmas, we'll give you a pass for that ;))

Eh... it's probably a combination of factors:

 

I'm in the least amount of pain that I've been in over the last 6 months

I'm seeing a little bit of progress with my lifting

The recent weight loss has helped me be a bit more confident

And I have a kickass holiday coming up in 4 months

 

As a rule, I do tend to have a stoic/pessimistic demeanor and I'm finding this happiness caper weird and confusing

Comp Bench: 115kg x 1, then 102kg x 4, 4, 4, 3 - was supposed to be 3 x 5 but it just didn't want to happen

Speed Bench + 18kg chains: 60kg for 9 triples

 

Then commercial gym for:

DBBench: 50kg for 4 x 8

Hammer strength row: 70kg x 10, 9, 10

Shitloads of pushdowns and curls

Mon 22nd Jan

Week Five Day One

 

Morning:

Nope. Frustrating morning... had a client rock up at 6am to train having worked in the sun for 2 days AND sustaining a concussion on Sunday... like seriously? Why did you even turn up?

 

Lifting:

 

Comp Squats: Hit singles at 150kg, 160kg and 165 kg - this is a 10kg increase in 8 weeks which I'm pretty happy with. Then I did 5 triples at 135kg (I was supposed to do 3 sets of 5 but it just wasn't going to happen)...

Comp DL: top set of 5 at 155kg - this felt pretty easy.

Assistance: Leg Press andback extensions

 

Conditioning: ALL the yardwork... took forever but it looks good.

 

Food:

Lots of cheesy and meaty goodness... Keto is the best thing ever...

 

Rambling:

Woke up feeling like I'd been beaten up in my sleep - I did nothing yesterday except sit in my chair and watch TV and apparently that doesn't work for me. Pretty happy with my lifting considering how bad I felt. I could maybe have squatted 170kg but it would have been 50% chaince of success and I'm not in the mood to fail ay reps at this stage of my training.

WED 24th Jan

Week Five Day 3

 

Morning:

Did some light cycling - still a bit sore in the ol legs from Monday.

 

Lifting:

 

Bench vs 18kg chains: Top single of 115kg - which is only 2.5kg under my PR that I set at a higher bodyweight.

Comp Bench: 3 x 5 @ 102kg - I couldn't get sets of 5 last Saturday, but today was the day. 0.5kg shy of my 5RM - I'll shoot for 104kg on Saturday.

Assistance: Assisted pullups, KB OHP and a ton of tricep and bicep work

 

Food:

Had ALL of the roast pork...

 

Rambling:

I'm definitely in the over-reaching part of my program - everything hurts and I'm feeling a little rundown... 1 more week and then it lightens off again and I should recover.

 

 

LIFTING: 18/24 (Need 20)  + 5 PR's

PROTEIN: 20/24 (Need 20) - BOOM! Achieved!

GOOD FOOD: 30/42 (Need 30) - BOOM! Achieved!

FRI 26th Jan

Week Five Day 5

 

Morning:

Nope.

 

Lifting:

 

Started with block pulls and worked up to 3 at 170kg... BUT... managed to tweak something in my lowerback (which I automtically assumed was my stupid fragile discs again) however it didn't get any worse after a few minutes (usually when I blow a disc, it's a mild pain that becomes crippling after 5 minutes or so). I cautiously warmed up for some squatting and it was fine.

Comp Squats: 5 triples at 137.5kg - 1st set was slow because I was being cautious but they got progressively faster and better.

Then I punished my glutes and abs by doing 100 lunges and 100 situps.

 

Food:

Kinda let my food slip the last couple of days - still Keto but not well structured and not much greens

 

Rambling:

Happy to say, it's been 12h since "the injury" and its very mild and I'm not concerned about it... it's actually kind of nice to have a small injury that's not threatening to put me in the hospital...

 

 

LIFTING: 19/24 (Need 20)  + 5 PR's

PROTEIN: 21/24 (Need 20) - BOOM! Achieved!

GOOD FOOD: 30/42 (Need 30) - BOOM! Achieved!
