Kestrel Builds A Temple - Part 1 (Foundations)

Zero Week - Friday

Today was a very low energy day.  I woke up on time, got through my morning routine, then crashed on the sofa until I had to leave for an appointment.  Followed by a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. I managed to bribe myself into going to the gym and lasted one mile of walk/running before I called it quits and went back home to my sofa again.  Thankfully it is now late enough for me to just go back to bed and try again tomorrow.  My one win today: I managed to stick within my macro goals, even without any cooking or grocery shopping.

To be fair, I'd say that getting along to the gym even for a little while would be considered a win too, especially on a low energy day. Those really do just suck the life right out of you.

I hope tomorrow is a better day for you :)

Thanks all, and the next day was definitely better.  I still have my SAD protocols from last October and I resort to Move Every DayTM when all else fails.  The protocol has got me through tough months, so I know it will get me through the odd tough day.

Week Zero Summary

1. Prepare the ground for building

I just made the cut-off for my target fat loss, and can avoid burpee hell for one more week!  My nutrition has been strict this week.  I started watching "The C-Word" on Netflix (mostly because I like Morgan Freeman's voice) and now I am beginning to think more about how I want this way of eating to be mine for the rest of my life, not just a temporary phase to win a bet or lose some weight.

2. Build a strong (running) base

The mileage goals don't start until Week 1 and I didn't go far this week.  I have a planned virtual 5K obstacle course race that I need to complete this week, which will take care of some of those miles!  It will be my first real test of my new shoes/insert combo so hopefully it goes well.

3. Use my building materials (time and energy) wisely

I did not spend my 5 minutes on my procrastinating task for the last two days, and napped instead.  The morning routine works really well when I make myself follow it, and the bird is happy to be getting the best of my energy. :)

Minutiae

  • Daily walks outdoors - Yes most days
  • Take my vitamins, especially Vitamin D - Yes every day
  • Strength training 2-3x/week - Twice this week.  My strength isn't increasing by much, but as long as I am in a calorie deficit I guess that is to be expected.
  • Daily stretching, mobility work, and physiotherapy exercises - No, but yesterday I pulled up Focused Flexibility and am restarting the stretches, it feels good to be working on being limber again.
  • Spanish language practise - sporadically

YESSSS once my mindset shifted to this exactly, everything became much more manageable!  Good nutrition really is a lifestyle change, slowly and steady sometimes... (I still eat taco lasagna sometimes too hahaha!)

I think it helps me to say the changes are temporary going in, then get used to it and keep it.  I honestly would not have gone down this current meal plan if I had meant it to be forever (what do you mean, no ice cream binges?). But two months later I am feeling pretty good and I have survived one of the worst nutrition times of year unscathed, so it is easier to see how this could be a forever thing.

Maaaan you are so right.  It took me YEARS to get into a "nutrition-as-a-lifestyle" mindset.  it really is a process!! ;_____;

I'm so glad you're seeing changes!  It's wooo~rking!! :DDD

The longer you go as well the better the cheat meals and binges get. My wife can't stomach most of the stuff she used to eat so a cheat meal might be a big steak and then a little ice cream.

Week 1 - Tuesday

Today was the day for my XWarrior Resolution Run, a virtual 5K OCR.  The write-up is in the OCR Accountabilibuddies thread but basically I realised that I am a better runner than I thought, and much, much worse at burpees. :D I guess burpees are going to become part of my program even if I am losing weight according to schedule. Alas.

Nutrition is almost pointless to update, because I am kicking so much ass there.  It is getting to the point where saying "yes, I ate well" is like saying "yes, I breathed today".  One day I hope my fitness gets there too. Yesterday the gym was closed for New Years and I didn't end up doing anything at all.  I more than made up for it this morning though. Seriously.  I had changed after my race, gone home, had a cold shower, and my face was still beet red half an hour later.  A good workout.

Thanks to all the blood moving around I felt quite mentally energetic and finished up a research project I was procrastinating on at work.  My morning use of energy still needs tweaking though.  I can't bring myself to get out of bed when I know I am going to be doing 30-60 minutes of chores right away so I think I will have to go back to a cup of green tea first thing.  I will just have to put a time limit on how long I veg.

Booo burpees, but maybe I will grow into a love-hate relationship instead of just hate.  They will need to get done because of exciting news today: all my vacation requests were approved for the year! So that means I'll be adding two more OCRs, including the Titan 12-Hour Black Ops.  I am SO EXCITED!!!!  Signature update to follow.

similar feelings of emnity about THAT exercise and any other ways to torture oneself in the "plank" position.

OTOH; Bodyweight exercises are going to be a big upcoming thing.  if Volume and Repetition create cuddles with ones least favorite exercise-

I'm surely going to be to a great lover of stuff like that in a little while....

BTW, congrats on the Busy Event schedule.  this would be a cool thing to do in my future!... to expand and grow my "social exercising"....

cuz lets face it nearly every 'race' devolves to the few that win; and those that are there to be part of something big.

I won't ask you to repeat the joy of an OCR- I've read ALOT about that. but I am a little curious.  you are at heart a hiker, right?

when did you decide to do stuff like racing and OCR?

was their a single event that made you feel, "yep, this is What I love to do..."?

the "NEW" normal is good with me! as Life was Never really Normal anyways....

My first OCR was a Tough Mudder, and I knew then that this is something I loved.  Hiking I love because I can use the endurance in my own body to get me to amazing places; it is mostly about the places, but the physical glow of knowing I got myself here supplements it.  OCRs are similar, except the physical glow of I got myself here is the biggest pull and being able to play outdoors in nature is the supporting joy.  As you say I am a hiker at heart, and OCRs hit all the same happy buttons from my very first one.

Week 1 - Wednesday and Thursday

My work has been moving me all over this week and I ended up missing my weight lifting session on Wednesday. It probably would not have been that beneficial anyways as I was still sore from my pseudo OCR on Tuesday.  I spent some time stretching and got a quick walk in instead.  This morning I woke up two hours early (ewwww) so I could get my run in and be changed/showered in time for working in the next city over.  6.25/9 miles run so far for this week.  I'll run the last 3 miles this weekend.  Because of the weird schedule I have not been having my normal meals so balancing my macros is a little difficult.  Today's dinner will be a scoop of whey isolate in 3/4 cup of greek yogurt.  Actually it is very tasty (the protein powder is chocolate then I add cinnamon).  Now my only issue is I have not done any adulting this week.

Just reading your challenge and thoughts - love what you say about cathedrals! Don't know if you are a fellow book lover, but I am currently reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It's set in mediaeval times and a main character is a mason who dreams of building a cathedral. How he speaks about cathedrals is like what you were saying. Great book so far, I'd recommend.
