Week 3 Summary

1. Prepare the ground for building - Yes! I am finished week three, meaning I have finished three months with 100% avoidance of any sweets or junk food, and won my bet.  It was surprisingly easy after that first couple weeks.  In celebration, on Saturday I had all the things I thought I was missing: cookies, chocolate, fast food burgers, and fancy Starbucks drinks.  I still feel kind of sick... and have decided I didn't miss all that after all.

I also ordered myself a pretty waxed canvas lunch bag as a token reward.

il_570xN.1192107692_pbnt.jpg

2. Build a strong (running) base - Yes, 9/9 miles. It was a good running week and the boost in calories seemed to help too. On to 9.5 miles for week four.

3. Use my building materials (time and energy) wisely - Still mostly no. The whole morning routine had become something I felt I should do rather than something I wanted to do for my own goals, so I am okay with dropping this.

Minutiae

  • Daily walks outdoors - mixed, though I got one really good hike in on Thursday morning.
  • Take my vitamins, especially Vitamin D - mostly
  • Strength training 2-3x/week - 2/2 As stated above, I was feeling strong and energetic this week and got all my workouts in, plus some extra core circuits after my runs.
  • Daily stretching, mobility work, and physiotherapy exercises - 7/7, mostly stretching and very little mobility work
  • Spanish language practise - Yes, I started watching Spanish videos this week.

I thought I had my sugar addiction licked. I do not. After giving myself permission to eat my fill on Saturday I have continued to eat crap until feeling physically ill every damn day.  And each morning after telling myself I do not eat like this anymore, I proceed to consume entire boxes of doughnuts.  Help.

I think the problem is too much unfocused anxiety, and not enough focused anger.  I'm going to try that for a while. :D  F* you, shortbread cookies.  You can't stop me from becoming who I want to be.

"Insanity is being shit on, beat down, coasting through life in a miserable existence when you have a caged lion locked inside and a key to release it." - Terrible movie, but I liked the whole part where he realises his anxiety that he has been trying to suppress is really adrenaline meant to drive him to excel.

Funny thing about addiction.  You can't ever get rid of it.  All you can do is manage it one day at a time.  For me, the key is using skillful habits and discipline every day.  When I do, my food is good.  When I don't, it's not good.  That's what works for me.

That is probably the answer for me too.  The last three months have been easy because I had an absolute rule, money on the line, and daily in-person accountability.   I'm not sure why I expected it to continue to be easy when all of that went away, but now I am having to rebuild my healthy eating habits from scratch.  People always say temporary diets don't work; I guess I had to find that out myself.

Week 4 - Midweek Update

Prepare the ground for building - I am still clearing the debris from my nutritional fallout.  My gut hates me right now.

Build a strong (running) base - 4.9 miles so far, and on track to hit 9.5 easily.

Use my building materials wisely - I have adopted an abbreviated morning routine that works better for me.  I have also managed to get a few more things off my to do list, so this is going okay.

Minutiae - I had a great snowshoe trip today with a pal out on Johnson Lake.  The snow was packed and the snowshoes completely unnecessary but they made it more fun.  Outdoorsy stuff for the win. :)

Image result for johnson lake winter

My first weight training session of the week didn't happen but I have a couple days off, so the second one will.  Spanish hasn't happened yet this week but I have been doing lots of stretching.

Week 4 Summary

Hurray for 5-week challenges! Honestly, I am glad this one has another week left.  There are some things I'm not done battling out, and I am enjoying the running part. :)

Prepare the ground for building - As stated previously, I am still resetting my eating habits after coming off of my diet restriction.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel though, and I am falling back into healthy habits.

Build a strong (running) base - 9.5/9.5 miles.  They felt great, and I am excited for ten miles next week.

Use my building materials wisely - managing my time and energy is still rocky, but ongoing.

Minutiae - I downloaded an easier Spanish children's book than the one I was struggling with, and the past few nights have been spent enjoying the tale of "Un Curioso Trozo de Madera".  I only hit one weight lifting session this week.  With such infrequent lifting I am happy my strength is merely stalling and not decreasing.  Next challenge will focus more on that... My only walk this week was the marvellous snowshoe trip, but I have been remembering my vitamins.

I am feeling optimistic going into Week 5.  There may be struggles but there is also progress.

Snowshoes!  its been so long since I was on snowshoes.

instead this winter I concentrated on either ignoring the snow and or look for places with less.  for example with warm air coming to my area on friday I went on a thawed the main route past a really pretty reservoir.

you know.... I'm actually surprised myself on how pleasant that place was. (I often overlook it cause its flat and has traffic)...

Yes, heavier traffic.  but there's not much traffic around midnight.

OTOH the really wide shoulders... made walking surprisingly good.

first double digit mileage since thanksgiving.

---

as for running.  I need to get the mileage up.  are you running 2 or 3 runs a week?  do you have to limit walking- or do you think cuz running is high impact and walking isn't. the two can be done independently?

I am currently running three days a week. Because my runs are slow right now, they don't interfere with walking, and actually walking is great recovery if my legs are a little stiff.

Next challenge one of my runs will be hill repeats, and my "walks" will include fast-paced mountain summits. Those two will tire me out the same way so I'll only do one or the other per week.

But mostly I listen to my body. My foot lets me know when I'm pushing too hard, so if it is feeling okay then I know it is safe to keep going.

Great week 4. I've only been snowshoeing once. I thought it was super hard, but I want to go again

Snowshoeing is crazy tiring when the snow is deep! But it is wonderful to be able to get out to places you wouldn't otherwise see until June. Where did you go?

all my future runs for a while will be slow...

I have some concerns that current training has emphasized speed over stamina. and stamina is actually more important than speed to future plans.

ofc months later; once I'm up to the half marathon distance I might see at the TM; then perhaps it is time to bring more speed.

its interesting you mention hills; my dad's reaction to my program is that I should consider tying the 2 together; for example running downhill and walking uphill on a hilly road we know about.

again its something I will consider later this year.

speaking of runs... (ha!)

its time.

Yeah, the reason I am doing all slow right now is endurance training, it was recommended building up stamina with base/slow miles over the winter until your weekly mileage matches your target distance. Then adding quality runs.

Any reason you are thinking of running downhill? That is usually the highest stress for your knees with lowest benefit to your fitness. Though the world's best trail runners practice their downhill runs as much as their uphill. :) Just curious.

the biggest answer to that question is Exactly what you say

100 mile endurance walk will first and foremost stress the knees like heck.  but shortish little walks would be easier to recover from.

if I add to knee stress slowly in my program

perhaps I can put off real knee pain towards the End of the upcoming of 100miler; rather than run into some kind of potential injury during that walk.

thats the thinking at least..

I think it was good advice in my case. I've learned not to try too much at once, and my first race isn't until May so I have time to periodize my training.

It makes sense. You can focus on that one aspect and then move on when you've built that up. When will you transition to quality workouts?

March I think.  Next challenge I will probably add in some hills, but that is more for leg strength than cardio.  That will still give me 10 weeks of quality workouts before my first race (16 before any larger ones) and I won't have to be increasing mileage and intensity at the same time, so my Q workouts should progress faster.

Yeah, you should certainly only be changing one thing at a time. It makes it impossible to know if what you are doing is having any affect whatsoever if you change all the things all the time. I'm excited to see you progress.

I'm not sure what's causing it, but my sinuses are getting progressively worse as the week goes on. Only at night; it doesn't feel like an infection, they just swell shut and make sleep impossible. Not happy. I cancelled today's weight session because I didn't sleep until 7 am.

I am making sure my nutrition improves to make up for it. :) Today I baked pumpkin protein cookies. They're nice, but I'll keep hunting for a better recipe, they're kind of dry.
