I am a member of a secret hunting society that tracks and kills monsters. The bounties are high, but so are the risks. The smallest mistake will cost me EVERYTHING-  my bounty, my gear, my life and my very soul.

 

Some hunt for wealth and some for power. Some hunt to protect others and some hunt for glory. I must track my quarry through a dark and treacherous world. Winner takes all. Fail, and go straight to hell.

 

Welcome to my first challenge of 2018! My name is Wild Wolf but most people just call me Wolfie. If you're new to my shenanigans, then please, take my sincerest apology for wasting your time  

 

Father of 4, husband, wolflean, sheepdog and Werespartan. I've been with NF since September 2012 and have never looked back. I've made countless friends over the years and even got to hang with a few nerds for what is dubbed as an "Epic Meetup" :). This upcoming year is a lot like most years but if you take a closer look, you'll see some very specific details that make it different. This is a year I'm a "do'er" and not a "don't'er" . It's rather simple really.

 

Not to do ALL the things. But ALL the IMPORTANT things. Things like,

• Getting my family out of the apartment lifestyle and into the house lifestyle
• Fixing my shoulders
• Finding a job that can support us better-whether that's a new job or my current one
• Write a book
• Climb outdoors (maybe not THAT important, but something I want to do)
• Take Dadhood to another level. I only get to be a dad once and I want to excel at this! Spend more quality time with the wolf pups
• Read the Bible cover to cover

 

That's  to name a few. Basically, 2018 will be a year of positive and successful change. How will I do that? Easy(ish). By collecting bounties on each challenge and reaping the rewards. My first bounty is the Hype-Stealing bastard from the last challenge!

 

My theme and possible running theme for the next couple challenges will be based after a PC game I recently discovered called Hunt: Showdown. The closed alpha is supposedly coming in January and I'm really excited about testing it out!

 

 

 

The graphics and theme say it all. The setting takes place right at the end of the 19th century in what is referred to as The Gilded Age, referring to the serious social problems we had that were masked by a "thin gold gilding". (This is also where the Wild West was nearing an end and pre-WWI weapons like the German Mauser C96 were coming into play.)  You take control over a bounty hunter and tasked to patrol the swamps of Hunt, Louisiana to battle the forces of evil. You can go in solo or with a partner but death is permanent in this game so the tension factor is ALWAYS high. Since my dad is more of a PC gamer, I told him about this and hoping we both get a chance to play together. Here's the kicker though. You have to be invited to the closed alpha. There's a strong chance I won't even get to play right now but how freakin cool would that be if I got selected?!?! It would almost feel like destiny...

 

 

So there's that. I am a bounty hunter and bounties will be collected. You may be asking yourself, "Ok swanky, I feel ya, Wolfie. This is a schweet theme! But why Bloodlines?" Bloodlines or "bloodline traits" stands for the progression system/skill tree in the game. XP, gold and bounty rewards are all stored in your Bloodline and some of these traits will be transferred over if your hunter dies because remember boys and girls, death in this game is PERMANENT! Any gear, consumable or extra item left on your hunter when he dies is lost forever. One would dare to say this game has only one mode: HARDCORE. 

 

This lines up perfectly how I wanted to kick off the New Year. #NoExtraLives

 

GOALS: I'm taking the old school NerdFitness approach to this challenge and starting my stat line over from scratch. We originally started with 15 total points to put in our 6 starting stats and I stopped adding to that over a year ago. I miss the leveling up and upgrade points so I want to get back to that. Visual and tangible upgrade points make the world go round . So I will re-work my starting 15 stat points and do my best to earn another 15 across this first challenge of 2018.

• Wisdom- 2
• Endurance- 2
• Charisma- 3
• Constitution- 2

 

Goal #1: Study Thy Prey

 

 

Has anyone ever heard of Supple Leopard? Yeah me too.... Oh yeah! I own the damn book! It's time to study up on my prey: my body. It's getting a tad older and things aren't working as good as they used to. This is a lot of my own fault. I don't mobilize daily and I need too, especially because I work a desk type job and spend WAY to much time sitting on my butt. #NoRestDays when it comes to mobility. The goal here is to pick 1x body part that's been bothering me and then implement mobility WODS from Supple Leopard to combat the trouble areas each week. More body parts can be worked at one time, but let's start with one and work our way into more. I'm 100% wolf but wouldn't mind the suppleness of my large feline friend .

 

Possible Upgrade Points: +2 CON, +1 STR 

 

Goal #2: Stalk Thy Prey

 

 

At the beginning of 2016, I suffered a type 2 AC joint separation on my left shoulder from playing real life Quidditch down in Austin, Texas. At the beginning of 2018, I'm dealing with my other shoulder now. It appears to be a slight AC joint sprain that may have been caused from bouldering like a boss. It's more discomfort than pain but still...something to deal with. This goal is all about getting my shoulders in a healthier state and by doing that, I'll visit my PT 2x a week (given time, money and some other factors) and work PT on my own 1x a week minimum. 

 

Possible Upgrade Points: +2 CON, +2 STR

 

Goal #3: Hunt Thy Prey 

 

 

Ahhhh the fun part. The Hunt. Why do I do what I do? For the thrill of the hunt? For glory? For my family? All the above. My ancestors were hunters. It is in my blood. I'm limited with my shoulder at the moment so now I need to figure out what I can and cannot do with it. This means testing myself in all areas and aspects of fitness. Find what works-discard what doesn't. Test all major lifts and talk with Paul (my PT coach) about getting me back out on the battlefield. Bouldering problems need to be sent and iron needs to be bent. Les do this!

 

Possible Upgrade Points: +1 STR, +2 DEX, +1 END

 

Goal #4: One Life to Live

 

 

I will write a book this year. It may not be edited and pretty but I will write one. To get the creative juices flowing, I'm starting out by doing something fun this challenge with my writing. I call this "Interactive PVE/PVP". It's where I take an idea, sometimes an original idea, and include people from the Rebellion in the story and have them complete PVE (Player Versus Everyone) tasks with me. Example; like cover a certain amount of miles walking or lifting a targeted goal of 10,000 ponds. I write things in a group setting, so that way everyone can interact and take part in the weekly task . Think of this like a mini-Mini challenge, lol. The story has already been laid out for the most part (with some changes coming soon). Me and everyone else who signed up have been coming up with bad guys we get to fight which has been a lot of fun. Brainstorming sessions like that are always a blast! If anyone is interested in signing up for the last spot in the story, please feel free! HERE's the sign-up sheet. NPC's and other secondary characters are needed as well so if you want to be included in the story without having to participate then sign-up.

The year is 1899, almost the turn of the century. America is still recovering from the Civil War 30+ years later and the brutal days of the Wild West are setting like the Sun at days end. We go to a town in East Texas called Sunrise. It's located in the dead center of the Piney Woods about 4 miles off the Neches River. Texas Ranger Carson Waiters is heading home to Sunrise to see his twin brother, Caleb and his family. Their farm is in trouble and Caleb has been dealing with bandits the last few weeks. When Carson arrives, he realizes something is wrong. The town of Sunrise has gone silent and everyone is missing. Not only that, but Carson can feel it. He can feel the evil presence that is laid heavy over Sunrise and its waiting for him.

 

During his quest to find his brother Caleb and his family, Carson will come across a few lucky survivors that will aid him in his journey. Together they come face to face with the evil that has plagued Sunrise and either save the town and its inhabitants or die tying.

I need some character info on all my Nomads by Sunday evening if possible. Willes, you're already good sir. I got your look and basic stuff down. I'll make sure you have Jessy  

 

Notable Enemies:

• The Possessed aka grunts- Possessed people of Sunrise. 1v1 they're no problem. Try to take on 3 or more and things can get dicey. 
• Imaginary Friend aka "Charly" (re-worked)- Huge, shaggy dog-like creature with a forked tongue and multiple eyes.
• Damsels- scorpion-angler fish combination. The body portion of the Damsels hide underground and use their lure/tail as bait. Instead of a stinger, its a woman in distress used to call out for help.
• The Brute- big, bloated creature with a mouth full of blood and steel plate riveted through it's bloated body. Slow but powerful. Carries a giant, barbed club, Not to be soloed. 
• Screechers- never seen but always heard. Avoid screechers at all cost. They will bring hell's army down on your head if you don't!
• Winged Ones-winged primate-boar looking creatures
• The Dentist- I'm still liking this boss because dentistry work was just hitting it's peak in the late 1800's and the tools used are still pretty basic and primal. I need to research some more.
• Noyers- little imp like creatures that don't cause any harm but can cause vast amounts of mischief at the worst of times. 
• Re-worked Gym Teacher Drunk Pa- I liked this idea but it doesn't fit my time period now. Need to think of something I can use for this.  Carson and Caleb's dad wasn't the nicest of men. A Civil War veteran that drank too much- he beat both boys and sometimes their mom when they were younger. When the boys were both 12, their "Pa" had fallen over dead with a heart attack while plowing the field at their farm in East Texas. His drunken rage still haunts Carson to this day. It's why he rarely drinks. 
• Penanggalan- a monster that looks like a regular woman, but when it attacks the head pops off of the neck and flies around dragging its entrails behind it.
• Swamp Leeches- worm like creatures that live in the marsh areas. They can drain you dry within a matter of 2 min so always be on the lookout for these. They start small and gain size rapidly. 

 

That's pretty much it for the story details. If you guys can think of something I missed then let me know .

Prologue:

Prologue

 

            The early morning Texas sun rose towards the east, it’s glimmering array of violets and deep reds dominating the horizon. It was going to be a beautiful morning. Clopping along the dusty dirt trail was a red dun colored quarter horse, well-muscled and strong. Atop the horse was a man. He was tall and lean with a chocolate colored cowboy hat, dark pommel slicker and rust colored bandana hanging loosely about his neck. With his chin dipped down towards his chest, the man appeared to be sleeping on his horse.

 

Clop. The caw of a crow echoes in the distance. Clop. A small lizard scuttles across the trail as a tumbleweed rolls parallel to it. Clop. The deep reds and purples of the early morning sky slowing brighten with warmth. The horse went about the path with its rhythmic “to and fro” sway as it’s rider also rocked back and forth. The man twitched suddenly but the horse kept its steady rhythm. Then he twitched again, this time almost shaking himself right out of the saddle. That sinking feeling of falling quickly overcame the sleeping man and he shot up right, wide awake. His left arm instinctively reached for the horn of his saddle, gripping it to balance himself. The horse nayed and snorted in reply to its rider’s sudden outburst.

 

Gathering himself, the rider with the rust colored bandana righted his hat that hung sideways on his head and patted the horses neck. “Eeeasy, Rupert. It was just a bad dream.” The man’s voice was raspy and dry sounding. The horse snorted again. “Yeah, yeah, I gotcha pal. We’ll stop and stretch, how’s that sound?” Rupert nayed in agreement. Up ahead, there was a small clearing with a few trees where Rupert the red dun and his rider could rest a little bit.

 

The rider dismounted somewhat lazily once they reached the trees and immediately went for his water canteen. Although warm, the water quenched his thirst. He turned towards Rupert and offered the canteen. “Thirsty?” He tilted the canteen sideways and let Rupert lap up the remaining water that spilled out. The sun was halfway over the horizon now.

 

The man removed his chocolate colored cowboy hat and slicker, resting both items on Rupert’s hind quarters. He ran his hands through his copper colored hair that looked to have recently been cut and squatted down in his boots. What the hell was that dream? My God! Caleb…Miranda…the kids. They were all…. dead? Murdered more like. No, Caleb wasn’t dead he was…

Caleb was moving quickly through the marsh, gliding across the ankle-deep water. He was moving impossibly fast, too fast for a normal person. Blood was stained across his boyish looking face and his shirt was riddled with bullet holes, yet, Caleb still sped across the marsh. He took a sharp turn left and exploded through the thicket, sending splinters of wood in every direction. A gun shot lit up twenty feet from where Caleb was, getting a direct hit on the side of his face, rocking his head uncomfortably sideways. The 2-inch sized bullet hole revealed a bloody mess of shattered teeth, gums and sinewy tissue. Another shot rang out, this one hitting Caleb in his chest. The force of the gunshot sent him flying backwards into the shallow marsh.

 

There was an eerie silence as the disturbed marsh water where Caleb lay motionless began to settle.

 

“Did ya get ‘em?” A voice whispered shakily.

 

“Twice.” Another voice replied.

 

“That don’t mean shit, Bill. Bullet’s don’t seem to hurt this…this man.”

 

“He ain’t no man, Sam. He’s possessed or somthin.” The man named Bill growled under his breath. A full moon shone bright overhead, casting a glow on the two men.

 

“Should we…ya know, go check on him?” Sam asked.

 

“If you’re so interested then by all means, go ahead.”

 

Sam shook his head frantically from side to side. “Hell no, Bill. He scares the shit out of me.”

 

Just then, Caleb rose from the water with his hands outstretched wide. He had a sick smile on his face, a good portion of the smile fading into the open bullet hole wound on his cheek.

 

“You should fear me, Sam!” Caleb spat out. But it wasn’t Caleb’s voice that spoke-this voice seemed heavy and wrapped in a kind of blackness. “You should ALL fear me!” the dark voice echoed again. Sam and Bill both opened fire on Caleb but he was too fast and closed the distance like a lioness on the hunt. Caleb, with a demonic like strength, grabbed Bill by his throat, lifting him off his feet, and began to squeeze. Bill’s eyes bugged out as his windpipe was immediately crushed and blood started to pour from his mouth. Caleb began shaking his head violently, working his jaw and seeming to unhinge it. The violent shakes went on for a few more seconds and Caleb, still holding Bill by his throat, began to work his unhinged jaw around the dying man’s head like a snake.

 

Sam screamed at the nightmarish sight and emptied the remaining rounds in his Colt revolver at point blank range. It did little good to save his friend. Rows of razor like teeth serrated Bill’s scalp, shredding up whatever remained of the man’s face and head. Seconds later, with a sick, wet sound, Caleb spit out Bills mangled head.

 

Caleb turned towards Sam now, that same sick smile spread across his bloody face with eyes that glowed a deep red. Bits of skull fragments and hair still clung to Caleb’s sharp teeth. Sam turned on his heels and started to run away, fear and terror controlling every part of his being. A deep demonic laugh sounded from Caleb’s chest and echoed throughout the marsh. “Run! Run little piggy!” Caleb yelled out after the fleeing Sam. “Run and hide, Sam. I quite like these games!”

 

Sam did everything he could to keep pace, but the ankle-deep water was slowing him down. He dared a look behind him and Caleb was still standing there laughing. A few more steps and Sam was on dry land, but adrenaline and fear had seized his muscles. Sam tripped on an exposed tree root and stumbled onto his hands and knees. He crawled a few more feet around a large tree and pressed his back up against it. Sam’s breathing was labored and sweat poured down his muddy face. The maniacal laugh of Caleb had stopped, and the marsh grew silent once again.

 

“No, no, no, no.” Sam muttered under his breath, bringing his knees to his chest. His heart was pounding loud in his ear and Sam broke loose a sob. Tears welled in his eyes. “Lord, please don’t let me die, I ain’t done nothin’ wrong in my life. I paid my dues, been friendly to my neighbors and go to church ever Sunday. Lord, please…”

 

The hollow sound was sudden. It was shortly followed by a wet thud. The pain was excruciating, and it took Sam a second to realize what had happened. A clawed hand was protruding from Sam’s chest, his fading, yet still beating heart gripped in its clutches. “Whaaa….but…”

 

“Your God has no place here, Sam.” The demonic voice of Caleb whispered. The voice seemed to be coming from all around Sam. With a vice like squeeze, Sam’s heart disintegrated in the clawed grip, ending the man’s life.

 

Caleb walked around the tree where Sam had hidden and shook his head in annoyance. “No God or man will stop me, Sam. Nope. Not this time.” With a quick snap of his fingers, the lifeless body of Sam began to writhe and convulse uncontrollably. “Now rise, my fearless possessed, and join your brothers and sisters. We’re expecting company…” Caleb trailed off and looked towards the west, his dark red eyes burning into the oncoming day.

The rider snapped out it, the reminiscence of the dream still very fresh in his mind. Sweat stained his forehead and he swallowed hard. It was just a dream, right? Caleb and everyone back home was fine. The man stood up, his knees popping from the extended period spent in a squat position. He snatched up his hat and slicker and untied Rupert. Regardless…Caleb hasn’t returned any of my letters. Something feels wrong.

 

“Alright, Rup, let’s get a move on, boy. Sunrise ain’t gonna wait on us to start the party.” He swung up in his saddle looking towards the east, his blue eyes burning into the oncoming day.

Here for he hunt but also loving your focus for 2018. I have started looking into monvat and am excited for the book to come out his year. While researching that I also came across this Supple Leopard book and so I will take a look unto that as well. I have decided that my focus for 2018 will also be mobility/locomotion/physical autonomy.  Still need to work out the specifics, though.

Oow man, this year is in so much trouble! Wolfie, I really liked your idea of restarting with the stat points, so i'm totally doing that, but seeing we are both here for quite some time i felt we needed this thing like a prestige level (ripped from the COD series)

The idea just kinda came to me as I was writing up the challenge. I liked the stats. They represented all the other challenges and successes/failures I had and I wanted to see that progress again. I was watching one of the Dev Diaries for Hunt: Showdown last night and it was talking about their progression and how you can level up a hunter and then ALSO level up your Bloodline. You can have multiple hunters that level up your bloodline. That's kind of what we do. The challenges are our "hunters" and each time we complete the challenge, we level up or level up our "bloodline". 

 

The whole thing that drew me into to NF was "level up your life". Gamefying your life. It's time to get back to my roots .

Lags is like my 6th man of the year-he'll come in off the bench, score 19 pt with 8 assist and 6 boards and 2 steals...in lifting terms, I could see Lags covering half that weight over the course of the week. #WhiteBuffaloWoman

Woot woot! Happy to see ya and be in your mind, Sif! I'll have some fun story telling going on this challenge so if you keep up with anything then keep a look out for the 2nd post I have saved because that's where I'll post story updates  

 

I have some writing to do. I want to get up a little prologue before the REAL story begins. If anything, I need to set up some background stuff because I'm changing my setting for the story. It WAS in modern times. And since becoming obsessed with Hunt, I want to change the time period to the late 19th century, say 1897. I want to tell the origin story of how the Nomads came to be. And, I wanted to do this without the advantage of 21st century tech. This changes some things in a sense but we can work around whatever speed bumps come up. I'm going to be working on a story synopsis for my 1st post I have saved and update everyone on that but for now-imagine your character in that time frame.

 

The setting will be the Piney Forest area of East Texas. It includes some nice wooded areas as well as some wetlands and marshes. Carson and Caleb Waiters are still twin brothers and instead of the need for neuro kits, all the Nomads have the ability to connect to Caleb's subcon controlled by the Terror. This will be possible because when Caleb is possessed, he goes on rampage, killing a lot of people in a 12-hour period. Each Nomad is someone directly effected by the Terror's evil and thus is scarred. This gives them ability to connect with Caleb's subcon. I'm not super worried about this making a lot of sense so the details may not be there, just that the Nomads have this unique ability and run with it. 

 

So, the same overall story, just more primitive in setting. The weaponry will be different as well. Think Wild West type weapons. Winchester repeater rifles, lever-action shotguns, pump-action riot gun, Mauser C96, Colt Peacemaker just to name a few. 

 

Now, off to work a little, write a little and see what everyone else in the Rebellion is doing
