LittleTurtle's Potato Experiment

LittleTurtle

Recommended Posts

I think that potatoes are trying to kill me.  No, seriously.

I have Hashimoto's.  I was diagnosed a little over a year ago, and you'd THINK that getting on some thyroid meds would make everything all better.  I've found out that this isn't the case.

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm unable (for the time being) to exercise like I used to.  I definitely can't eat the way I used to.  And I have to pay attention to my body so diligently that I've about exhausted myself into not even caring anymore because I haven't had a "good day" since like...August...

But up until a few months ago, I didn't realize that potatoes are a nightshade....and I eat potatoes ALL the time!  I gave them up a few months ago (perhaps around the end of July or so...hence why I probably felt really good in the month of August), but then I eat a tater tot or something and my brain goes into some crazy addiction mode and then I can't stop eating them no matter how awful I feel.

So.  I've decided to try an experiment.  A potato elimination experiment.  I'm desperate to feel better again.  I mean...what have I got to lose?  Except the delicious, magical, deliciousness of potatoes...  :(  ...But NO!   I must prevail!  If cutting potatoes results in better days...then f*&k 'em!  I can't take living like this anymore!!

My goals have shifted for now...from trying to lose weight to just feeling like an actual human being again.

GOALS

1 - Eliminate White Potatoes

Reason:  To assess whether or not these tasty little devils are a source of my widespread pain.  Spoiler Alert - They probably are!

2 - LIGHT Exercise - 20 minutes/4 times per week

Reason:  I’m basically back to square one. Overdoing it always backfires and causes massive pain (not DOMS) and results in major setbacks.

3 - Daily Assessment: “How am I Feeling Today?”

Reason: To determine possible trends as to why I’m having bad days*.

*BAD DAYS =

Mornings I wake up in so much pain I can hardly crawl out of bed

giphy.gif

Brain fog that makes it difficult to concentrate at work...or anywhere else really...

giphy.gif

Debilitating fatigue that results in naps exceeding 2 hours

giphy.gif

Leg pain that causes me to hobble around like the Tin Man in serious need of an oil can

XUE2ZE.gif

Stiffness that makes everything I do seem like a big, fat NOPE

Honestly?  Potatoes are over-rated.  I haven't had any for over 2 years and I don't miss them at all.  If you can eat sweet potatoes, which are not from a nightshade family, they make a delicious and healthy substitute.  For me, who can't have those either, mashed cauliflower is great, and celeriac or swede oven chips/fries.

Good luck with your challenge!

I'm very impressed by your decision to cut out a food that you like, but that is clearly causing you so much misery. This takes a lot of courage, and I think it's very aweseome! I'm interested to see the outcome. Also, what kind of light exercises do you plan to do?

Thank you!  It's kind of funny because I completed a Whole30 in 2016 and felt absolutely awful after about the 16th day.  I think it was because I was eating more eggs and potatoes than usual!  It's a bit frustrating because I don't know what the heck to eat for breakfasts anymore!  :indecisiveness:

As far as exercise, I am only allowing walking and yoga.  I have a treadmill in the basement, so I will just have to force myself to ONLY walk on it....maybe put a tiny incline on it.  The problem is, I LOVE to run.  I get on the treadmill and I can't help myself...I start to jog and then I can't help but run.  But then I can hardly move at all for the next several days.  So I have to be very diligent in just walking.  I also have some great yoga DVDs that aren't too strenuous.  Once my body calms the eff down and I start to get some mobility back, I'll reassess the exercise goals.  :frog:

Sounds like an awesome plan. It can be difficult keeping the intensity of exercise to a lower level, especially when you are used to turning it up several notches. But it sounds like you have pretty good insight into your abilities.

Someone very close to me has struggled with fibro throughout the years. The misery is real. Much the same as you describe, one might be moving, and feeling good about it, and keep going or even turn up the heat, only to suffer for days because of it. It is heartbreaking to see. Thankfully, our circumstances have changed a bit and alleviated some of the problem in the last year. I can only hope you find some recovery as well.

If I would've gotten on the treadmill when I started thinking about getting on the treadmill, I would've been done a couple hours ago...

So far, so good!  (Except for dreading getting on the treadmill...but walking on a treadmill is really rather boring and it's like below 0 degrees F outside, so THAT'S not happening.)

Alright, alright....I'm getting on the treadmill right now...sheeesh!  ;)

Confession:

Once I got on the treadmill, I didn't want to stop.  I did though...after my goal time of 20 minutes...can't overdo it this early in the game!  Also, I find that if I get off the treadmill sooner than I want to, then I'm much more excited to get back on the next day.  Also, the hardest part of exercise for me is just simply starting!

Sorta related...

I LOVE the Foo Fighters.  I've loved them since the 90's, but my love has been renewed full force because my boyfriend and I went to see them live in concert about a month ago, so I became obsessed all over again.

Anyway...about halfway through my treadmill walk, "Walk" by the Foo Fighters came on and I was chuckling because there is a lyric that goes, "Learning to walk again.  I believe I've waited long enough.  Where do I begin?"  And then near the end of my walk, the song "Run" came on, and there is a lyric in that song that goes, "In another perfect life, we run..."  and I was all like WOAH!  I totally would be running in a perfect life!

I dunno...it was all very poetic to me.    Kinda gave me goosebumps.

And with that, I guess it's time for bed.

Goodnight, Druids.

Well, my boyfriend and I went out for dinner tonight, and I absentmindedly ordered my burger on a potato bun and then ate some of my boyfriends french fries without thinking.  And then the other day at the store, I was gonna to see if the coconut oil potato chips I like were on sale before it dawned on me...potato chips.  :stupid:

This is gonna be harder than I expected...

"Progress, not perfection" someone in the Druids once told me.

I did, however, find a website that listed a few sciatica stretches for pain relief.  I did one or two of those stretches earlier today and HOLY FREAKING BUCKETS, BATMAN!!  I felt instant relief.  Relief like I haven't felt in months!!  It never dawned on me that the particular pain in my upper leg area where the bone connects into the hip near the buttocks area (I have no idea what the anatomical definition is) could be related to my sciatica...and maybe it isn't related, but hell...if the stretches help - I don't really care!  And don't get me wrong...for the purposes of this particular challenge, potatoes are still the devil, but if I slip up (which I will most certainly do at least a few more times), I am hoping that these particular stretches will help.

Also, (and as much as I already know this, but hate to admit it or want to come to terms with it), I don't think sugar is really doing me any favors.  For instance, I rarely drink soda, but the other evening I had a Coke with dinner and within an hour or so, I could feel a significant pain flare-up AND I had massive brain fog and fatigue the next day at work....and well into today.  Giving up sugar scares the ever-loving bajeezus outta me.  That is an EPIC goal, but in the meantime, I need to really access the sugar I choose to ingest.  Soda?  Not really worth it to me.  Ice cream on the other hand....

No exercise yesterday or today, but I have yoga planned for tomorrow morning.

Namaste.

Progress, not perfection. I like that. That is probably a good mantra to keep in mind when trying and kind of food elimination thing...I seriously think that is the hardest thing a person can do. I think it's awesome you and making the attempt.

Well, we're in it now. The s**t's hit the fan.

I've been feeling very tired this weekend.  I slept in until around 11:00am both Saturday and Sunday morning.  I also woke up with a bit of a headache this morning.  I'm on my last day of a 5 day course of antibiotics, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.  Also, I didn't eat a single gram of sugar yesterday, so it could be some kind of withdrawal thing going on.  OR - the little bit of potatoes that I consumed Friday night really did me in.

I did a 20 minute yoga video yesterday afternoon.  It was the second practice of "Introduction to Power Yoga".  The actual video was fairly simple, but my body is feeling it today.  Not in a bad pain sort of way, but in the DOMS sort of way.  Not too bad, just enough to remind me that I worked out yesterday.

In fact, the body pain has been bearable the past couple days...just mostly stiffness.

Anyway, I give myself an A for Week 1.

Piriformis stretches are bomb for sciatica! Standing pigeon works if you're at a desk or in a cubicle all day, and I also like this one a lot, it starts in the position below and you just roll gently towards the top leg till you feel the spot:

Small success:

I did NOT take a nap today even though it was basically all I wanted to do.  Instead, I did all of my laundry, picked out work outfits for the entire week, watered all the plants, and all those other little mundane chores one must do the Sunday before a fresh new week.

It'll be an early night I think, but for now...I'm off to do some of those life changing stretches.

Super simple stretches that feel amazing and work wonders for those particular pains areas that I've never been able to reach!!  :D

Well done with your week. And thanks for showing what stretches you use. I may try that reclining/reverse pigeon pose. I'm kind of afraid of the forward pigeon pose. I vaguely remember trying that one some time ago, and it being a bit too intense for me. Something to work up to I suppose.

It's a bit frustrating because I don't know what the heck to eat for breakfasts anymore!  :indecisiveness:

I had a problem like this and got some amazing input here. Don't know if you can eat these though:

Millet can be cooked with water(milk should be fine, too) and fruit. Or cooked and then adding cut salmon or veggies and goat cheese. Or...

Buckwheat and Amaranth make decent pancakes without eggs or milk. It took me long to figure out the right heat, but they can be rolled without breaking.

That's what I do for breakfast at least.

I'm sure you will find something that suits you and will feel better soon :)

I am the storm."

Is summer squash on the no fly list? I made a batch of zucchini cakes this weekend, and after tasting them, decided they would be good lil breakfast nuggets. Almond flour and eggs too...
