RIGHT?! The clothing I think is probably the worst for me. (I have been known to have a full Smeagol / Gollum argument with myself: Hey, it's only 10 bucks! You have almost the identical top at home. But, they're old-er and this is new! You have 50+ tops; you could avoid laundry for months and not re-wear things. But..Shiny!! I NEEEDS IT, PRECIOUSS!)  Ahem. I probably shouldn't let the bats out of the belfry so early in the day. ;) But, yes, the struggle is there. If it's genuinely needed, then fine. But so much of the extras that happened over the last few months just weren't really worth it. That's the kind of spending I'm looking to forestall, and the kind that I've been having a harder time with so far this week..

all you guys with your spending goals are actually making ME spend less this month! thanks for that ;)

It's that scale that I try to remind myself of... want to have > nice to have > need to have. Clothing is definitely the hardest and it even falls under want to have! Because who doesn't want to look nice and feel confident?

Nothingtowear.gif

It's amazing the purchases I've managed to avoid. For example, I've starting taking a cup of greek yogurt to work every day (rather than buying single serve containers) and I thought I "needed" to buy a bunch of 1 cup tupperware and then realized if I just washed it out after each time I used it, one was fine. That definitely was a grey area of want to have vs nice to have.

Absolutely not. You and I need to spend more, to make up for their lack thereof. Money that's not in circulation is worthless!

That's the spirit! Do it for the economy!

Oh good, you all can stimulate the economy for me. ;) I'd like to eventually save up for a trip to Alaska but I have some debts to pay down first. So this no spend January is probably turning into a no spend 2018.... you both may have your work cut out for you!

hahaha good call though. i usually just thoroughly rinse my lunch/snack containers after eating whatever was in them and use them again the next day. then wash them at the end of the week. is that gross?

so i think what you all are saying is I don't NEED tickets to go see an artist i've seen before even though they're only $31? definitely having that debate this morning.

Love your strategies, and also ALASKA! Now if I had a nice end-goal it would probably make some of those gray are choices easier. "Are these shoes more important to have right freaking now than that [trip I've always wanted to take/being debt-free/etc]?"

I will assume you've never gotten sick from it, so as long as it doesn't affect the flavor of the food, meh, go for it.

I mean, if said artist is your favorite, or you had the most amazing time ever at the last show, that would be a tough call. (I for one would spend it to see NEEDTOBREATHE in a heartbeat.) Otherwise, what other show would you maybe rather see that you could put the $31 towards?

Experiences are worth more than material stuff IMO, and if you don't see that band today they might not be there tomorrow. Last time I decided I'd skip seeing Type O Negative, Peter Steele died a few months later. :( Also bands break up a lot.

i totally agree. i was heartbroken to hear about dolores o'riordan without having got a chance to see her. BUT! i've seen this artist already (Bishop Briggs) and though it was a super fun time I don't thiiiiink i need to see her again right now. also we're going to a big music festival already this year lol i think we're going to put the money towards a 5K.

In the pipe-dream sense, everywhere lol

There are a couple of places I'd like to visit. I've always wanted to visit Scotland for one. (Apparently there's a castle with my surname on it. Whether I'm actually related to/descended from that line, I've never researched to find out.)

350px-Crathes_Castle_2.jpg

I'd also like to learn how to snowboard, so maybe Colorado or another ski resort. Hawaii is probably nice this time of year too lol.

I don't know.. I'd like to ride a lot more rollercoasters, so maybe try out some of the more famous ones. (Or go back to Cedar Point. That place was pretty cool when I was there.) Haven't thought about this sort of thing in a while, so there's more than that but I guess those are the ones that spring to mind..

I'm only about 60-90 minutes from there, depending on traffic, so I could probably talk myself into visiting lol. I went to Hogwarts when they 1st opened, but haven't been back since they expanded. The only downside is approximately 0% of my circle are HP fans, so I would be the only one to really appreciate the level of detail they put so much effort in achieving.

I will have to put some thought into this and see what I come up with..

That's an interesting mix of folks! Yeah, I'd be totally fine with that. I know nothing about FFXIV, though, full disclosure.

Week 3 (of 5) summary:

  • Video at least 1 of the heavier sets of each lift. Floor press done. That just leaves OHP, which I haven't done in 2 weeks because shoulder.
  • Try out some new accessories. Maybe some bro stuff. Bit more than previous weeks, and I've continued with the core work. Shoulder is 95% so hopefully get some done this week!
  • Be more focused at work. Do not obsessively check news/NF/endless non-work-related articles of interest. 4 days were good, the other one I think the most productive thing I did was make a playlist lol.
  • Better budget awareness. Need to cut down on frivolous spending. Stuck to the stuff on my list at the grocery. Did go to the movies, but used a gift card, so doesn't count :P
  • Read things that challenge me. Read at least one of the following: classic literature, self-help, or otherwise educational. Nope! Had a couple of titles on hold at the library that of course became available/downloaded at the same time. Finished the 1st, working on the 2nd and then back to goal-oriented mats.
  • Stop saying "I'm old" Check! This was more of a challenge this week, coming across a couple of 25th /30th anniversary things. But I didn't say it! I just muttered get off my lawn..

Misc:

  • Oil change Not yet.

Rolling goals

Devo 7/7. Check!

Walking. 7/7. Bonus 7!  (Score / reward TBD) Check! New high score: 11 weeks straight! This required some serious power walking before bed Friday, but I did it.

#Yoga365 730. 7/7. Bonus 4. (Score / reward TBD) Don't forget front split practice! Check!

Conditioning circuit felt really solid, though I did still trade jump rope for burpees. (Not going to lie, I think that may stay because I kinda hate burpees anyways.) I did skip OHP Friday again, just trying to get my shoulder to 100%. It was almost there, but the floor presses on Tuesday were probably not a great plan. Resumed normal eating, after last week's weirdness. Probably some overcompensation happened, but oh well. Also, this whole correcting bad form is trickier than I figured it would be. Patience is not necessarily my strong suit, but trying to remember that 1) it isn't a competition, 2) I could get hurt lifting improperly, 3) gains will not disappear overnight.

Onward to Week 4! (of 5)

IDK.
