Big_Show
Happy New Year, nerds! I had a fantastic Christmas & New Year with the Welshman, plenty of time spent visiting family & friends and also having quiet time to ourselves in the middle of there too, somehow. But now it's time to crack on with 2018, and I appear to finally in the position at the start of a challenge where I have no injuries! With a view to this, I am taking everything right back to basics again and building from the ground up again in order to try minimising the likelihood of them happening again. So my goals for this challenge are quite simple: 1) Run three times a week - I have a half-marathon in mid-March which is the focus of this goal. I don't expect a good time, but I want to make sure I can run the entire thing without stopping. I have a simple but progressive plan already sorted, so now all that remains is to do the training! 2) Bodyweight workouts twice a week - I have started from the beginning with the startbodyweight.com progressions as they worked well for me in the past. This way I get a full body workout every time (once deadlifts are inserted into the programme from next weekend), and it'll stand me in very good stead for the Spartan Super I have entered in April with other UK nerds. 3) Daily yoga - I will do at the very least a NF Yoga mini-session every day, and preferably a full session whenever I get time. This is a proven injury-prevention strategy for me, which unfortunately I am apparently too stupid to remember to continue doing when I haven't been injured for a while... 4) Read books - I started reading books on the train home last challenge and I'm really enjoying getting through them. I have a pile of books left to read followed by the ones already downloaded onto my Kindle, then I can finally start buying new ones again. Hoping to get through plenty in 2018! So that's my challenge - nice & simple, but acheivable. I will also be using my custom challenge mechanics again (see next post). 9 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. One day at a time. Big_Show
Hey guys, good to have you all along!Quick phone update only today - a friend from Newcastle is down visiting this evening and I haven't seen her since March 2016, so laptop is not a priority today.I have Quad DOMS of Death today - three runs & 2 gym sessions in the last 5 days are probably the reason! Plus Bulgarian Split Squats are bastards. So it's probably handy that today is a rest day! When I get in I'm going to do my yoga & foam-rolling immediately to make sure they get done.Full update coming tomorrow for the first three days of the challenge!Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk 2 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. Big_Show
Ok, so I don't have time to do retrospective points for the first couple of days so I'm just starting them from today. Better late than never! Today was just a regular day at work. Loads of doughnuts, cakes, and chocolates in the office but I resisted. I even asked a colleague to slap me if she saw me pick up a cookie. Thankfully she was not required. On the way home my train was cancelled leading to a half hour delay for the next one (no reading on the train as I was submitting my claim for my ticket instead), and then when I finally got to the gym there was a fire alarm and we were briefly evacuated from the building. But eventually I was able to get on with my workout! I moved up to the next progression on a few exercises today, and on the ones where I haven't quite reached that point yet I still managed to perform more reps this time round. It definitely kicked my arse though! Dinner tonight was a beef & broccolli stir-fry recipe that I ripped out of a fitness magazine. I was kind of dubious as the sauce was made out of Bisto and teriyaki sauce, but it turned out to taste rather lovely! We had it with leftover yorkshire puddings - a classic combo I'm sure you'll agree... Yoga is happening immediately after this update, soon to be followed by bed as well. SO tired today... Big_Show
Thursday is out of the way, nearly at the weekend now! I decided to jettison my planned run for the evening. I've been feeling a bit tired & run-down all week, plus my ankle was sore for no apparent reason today, so I'm taking the extra rest day as a precaution. One 4M run is hardly going to break my training programme, and this way I know I'll be fine when it comes to my 6M on Saturday. Instead, I did two Yoga mini-sessions - I've never actually done the Shoulder Mobility video before, and it turns out I do not have much! This is definitely going to become a more regular feature in my training, especially now I'm aiming at more bodyweight & calisthenics exercises. Nothing much else to add today; kinda knackered though so gonna head to bed early. After starting work on planning our Summer holiday...
