Don't you just love that movie? It is so relatable: we all have different voices arguing inside our head. This challenge I'm going to change from the inside out, listen to the voices and find my own voice.

This challenge I'm not going to change on the outside: no strict food rules, no changing my environment to fit my goals. Because that stuff doesn't change my relationship with food, it doesn't change my  brain. So, what am I going to do this time?

I've talked about Life on Tellus before here. And I still love this approach. The theory is that you've got a lower brain, she calls it a dinosaur, but I'm picturing mine more like a dragon :P

red_crystal_dragon_by_sandara-d9xs66f.jpg

And you've got a higher brain. Your true self. She pictures it as Hermione (from harry potter), more because that toy was the closest thing resembling a human being in her house I guess ;) So here is my Hermione:

hermione_granger.jpg

The short version is: your lower brain (dinosaur, dragon, lizard, monkey brain or whatever you want to call it) is instinct, habit, it does what you have taught it to do. If you taught it food makes you feel better when you are sad, it will direct you to food every time you get sad. It is stupid, it doesn't think things trough, it only cares about survival right now. Your higher brain is your intelligent self: the one that knows that the chocolate will make you feel better for a few minutes, but isn't the right thing for you to eat right now. It isn't healthy or you aren't hungry.

The trick is to actually face your dragon. And realize that you are an all powerfull wizard/witch that will have no trouble taming it. Your dragon can trow all the tantrums in the world, but in the end you are the boss. You say what goes. You take care of yourself, you look at the long term.

So my goals for this challenge:

And I'm copying this directly from the Life on Tellus blog

Quote

1.       Show up with curiosity.

What if life has bigger plans for you and you’re missing out because you think you know better? What if by dropping all you think you know about how things should be run, you let go a bit and see what happens? What if the right people and right opportunities will come by themselves if you just show up and be curious.

2.       Give it your ALL – go full in.

Play the game of life with all you’ve got. Don’t hold back. Whatever is in front of you have fun with it and immerse yourself in the present moment. Give life your all.

3.       Let wisdom show you the way.

Get comfortable with saying “I have no clue how to do this”…and then wait for wisdom to show you how to do it. The answers usually come when we need them. Not before. Not when we’ve written down what needs to be done and set a plan of how things should be. They come through action. Through walking in the darkness.

And for the practical part:

Knowing I have a dragon, and learning to face it opens the way to really take care of myself, love myself. I'm going to do that by creating discipline: choose healthy, don't eat too much, move around. I recently got a fitbit that is going to help me do just that :)  I love new toys :D

I'm really digging the sleep data.  I'm pretty much a data geek so I love all the data trends from the app.  I've also turned on the hourly step goal.  So not only do I have an overall step goal, but it reminds me every hour to get 250 steps in.  This is great for work when I can just sit at my desk for hours.

I've had a fitbit in one form or another for 5 years now and I wouldn't be without it. I upgraded from the One to the Blaze last Christmas (2016) and I love it. It tracks everything for me and I love looking at trends and patterns. It helps me work out a more reliable calorie goal too since it has a HRM and it tracks my activity more accurately. I love Fitbit, and they last for a very long time. I have used it every single day for 5 years and I have only ever had to replace the holders or straps once or twice - never the actual device (until I upgraded, my old one still works and my boyfriend uses it)

I got the fitbit flex2, because it is in my price range (the others are more expensive), and because it is small. I've got really small hands and wrists, so I don't want anything too bulky. It doesn't register hart rate, but it does count stepps and logs the time you're active. I've just used it for a couple of days, but I LOVE the data it collects! It is fun and useful. Also the reminder to move every hour helps.

Following along. I just got Intuitive Eating and started reading it, what you posted reminds me of what I've read so far.

Yes, it has a lot of the intuitive eating format. The most important difference is the realization that your urges aren't YOU, they are your lower brain. So there is no use in beating yourself up when you binged/ate mindlessly/ate unhealthy. And you can stop the urges in their track just by realizing they are there, and they are not you. It sounds easy, but it really isn't. I often realized I let my lower brain take the lead after I already gave in to my urges to eat too much/not healthy. But it is getting easier the more I practice :)

We got the keys to our new house last Friday. First thing I did (on recommendation of the lady who lived there) was find someone to sand and varnish the wooden floor on the first floor. It had to dry, so we could get into the house on Sunday. On Saturday I went to the store to pick out paint for the boy's rooms and a small piece in the living room that was deep red at the time. I painted J's room pink (he chose the color of course) on Sunday. On Monday SH and my MIL went to the house. My MIL painted a bit and SH dove into the wiring of the house while I watched the kids and did some a lot of laundry. I also played pokemon go again with the boys to get my steps in. It was fun!

Today (Tuesday) the boys went to a friends house for the day and SH had to go back to work. So I went to the house by myself and painted J's room for the second time, and put a first layer of light purple on the red wall (that my MIL had painted white, so the purple would look better). The local contractor came by. He's going to put a wall in the big bedroom to split it in two, so A will have his own room too (it will be blue and yellow, and my sister will paint Donald Duck on the wall for him).

tl;dr: I got lots of painting done in our new house and played pokemon go with the boys.

Loving the theme for this challenge. We're totally twins right now. I just finished listening to a podcast episode about mind management that talks about overriding your dragon brain.

I'll just leave the spark notes I took down.

Key to take away from mind management

your brain is static

* Every time you were neurons fire, it makes it easier to use that pathway again

Love your prefrontal cortex

* newest part of the brain in evolution

* It prioritizes, plans, suppresses urges

* Needs Time for mental rest

* Very small + needs a lot of mental energy

Fight your amygdala

* older part of the brain

* And as a lizard brain

* Fear driven

* Stifles creativity

Restorative activity

* no rest = amygdala working/ pre-frontal turned off

* E.G.sleep, exercise, time with loved ones

* Increase mood + sleep = insightful thinking

Mind management tips

Mindful meditation

* it carves neural pathways to better process stimuli and environment, makes you calm + deliberate

Make time for planning

* make separate dedicated time

* Do this when mental energy is high such as early morning or late evening

* Freeze up prefrontal cortex to do other things

* Example is a bullet point list for the week

* Google prefrontal Mondays

Trick yourself

* start with a task for 10 minutes without stopping

* After 10 minutes you fall into a rhythm

* Sometimes we lack the dopamine for motivation

It sounds easy, but it really isn't.

It's simple but not easy. The two are not synonymous. Simple means not many parts. Complicated means a lot of interlocking things working together. Something complicated can be easy and something simple (like what you described) can be hard.

I went to zumba again today! It has been a few weeks unfortunately :( But I was glad to be back. Just 9 more sleeps until we move into our new house, and I'll be able to go to zumba (and dancehall classes) more often again!

Tomorrow I'm going to start making curtains. It's the first time doing this, but I found a great youtube video that explains it very well.

My fitbit called me an overachiever today. I'll take it :D

Sharks attacked today, so I didn't get as much steps in as I wanted. And I allowed myself a little extra kcal.

But fitbit did give me my marathon badge :D  (Didn't knew that was a thing, but I like it nonetheless ;) ). You get that after having walked 42 km

I had decided to make all the curtains for our new home. Turns out that is a lot of work, who knew :P

But it's fun. And I'm making stuff that is actually useful. This week the contractors are going to make two rooms where there was first one room. Hopefully they'll be done on Wednesday, so I can start painting A's room. Next Saturday we're going to move ALL OUR STUFF into our new home! And we'll sleep there for the first time (not on beds probably, but on mattresses on the floor until we've put the beds together).

Goal wise it's going great. My dragon got the best of me a few times, but I manage to at least see what was going. I got my steps in 6 out of 7 days, and got a kcal deficit every day (not always the 500 I was aiming for, but I'm okay with that).

This morning there where 3 naked men standing beside my bed singing "Happy Birthday". Two of them gave me pieces of art they made themselves. And the third one promised me to go shopping with me for a photo album.

Spoiler

No, this was not some weird dream:

When SH (my husband) tried to collect the boys to wish me happy birthday J had wet his pants, so he had to take them off. When SH was finished cleaning up J, A had already taken off his pj's to put on his clothes (as he is instructed to do every morning, but this time it was bad timing). So instead of taking the time to get the boys dressed, he also took his clothes off and the three of them walked into my bedroom to wish me happy birthday :D
