Tzippi Goes Mama Bear!

Recommended Posts

Well, it's been quite a while, but I am back! My son is 3.5 months old, I am back to pre-pregnancy weight (but not nearly so strong and flexible), and I am ready to build my strength and endurance back up so I can take care of my little man and keep up with him once he gets mobile (which is coming alarmingly soon). I'm constantly amazed by how much he inspires me, with his little toothless grin and shriek-squeaky giggle. So I'm going to try to use that inspiration to get myself in better shape for him (and myself) with the MAMA BEAR CHALLENGE!

Work on upper-body strength with a push/pull-up challenge. The important thing is the chain, even more than the number. As long as every day is growth from the previous day in either push or pull, it is a success. Important for being able to carry Weestockings around, as well as battling the machines to protect him. Classic cinema Mama Bear.r

EDITED: Switching this to push only for now,  until/unless I find our resistance bands or pull-up bar. I know I won't go to the park every day, and the kitchen table hack doesn't work- I nearly pulled it over on myself just pulling up my upper body.

Continue to get steps in, and bump it up a bit from 8,000 to 9,000 per day. My Fitbit is generous as far as walking around the house while bouncing the boy goes, so I should be able to hit that more often than not. Untraditional cinema Mama Bear.

Mama Bear Panda:

For my own health and well-being, the nutrients to pass on to Weestockings, and to get back into good eating habits to be a good example to him, I'll make like a panda mom and eat bamboo two servings of green vegetables a day. Literal Mama Bear.

Mama Bear Self-Care:

I've had a good time so far, and love being with my family, but I've been back to dance class the last two weeks, and that two hours of time to myself and for myself has made a huge difference in how I feel coming home. Goals are to dance 1/week, and take at least one other at least 1/2 hour time to myself, not taking care of the boy. Going to the supermarket or doing chores does NOT count. Metaphorical Mama Bear.

a Strength Feat: 2 days Shovelglove

a Speed Feat: 30 minutes intense shimmy and isolations practice, 2x

a Distance Feat: One time at the gym, some sort of cardio (as much to try out taking Weestockings to the drop-off childcare at the gym. Gulp.)

a Combat Feat: Prepare a curry, stew, chili, or other multi-meal dish. (Veg chopping = combat, right?)

and a Rangerly Outdoorsy Feat: take the baby on a short hike in the foothills. No time or distance, just get bundled, get him strapped on, and get outside.

Ok, Week One, Day One. Started late, but I'm still going to do this! I'll need to walk a lot tonight to make up the steps, and get some green veg for dinner tonight. I'll stop by the store on the way home and get some steam-able bags of vegetables at the store, to make the goal as easy as possible on myself. I'll see how many push ups I can do tonight, and then that will be my baseline for the rest of the challenge.

Thanks, Elastigirl!

Week One, Day One: ate two servings of steamed veg with Trader Joes chimichurri rice for dinner. Steps only 6,000, and I completely forgot to push/pull. So not the greatest success, but a start.

Goals for Week One, Day Two:  I have dance tonight,  which will get half my self-care goal for the week. I have more veg in the freezer, so greens should be doable. Push ups as soon as I can get out from under napping baby. And I'm going to try to get to the hills for a hike with the bundled boy later this morning,  if possible. It's a lot of goal for one day, but we'll see how we do.

EDITED:

Did the walk at the Hyatt Hidden Lakes Reserve, and little boy loved it!I didn't go up the hill, because the ground was slick with ice and packed snow, and even with my Docs . . . A Ranger must be bold, but a Mama Bear is cautious about potentially falling on her cub, or sliding down an incline into freezing water with him. Nonetheless, 20 minutes of fresh air and sunshine! Well over 9,000 steps already, before dance. Green Salad with potatoes for lunch, yakisoba with vegetables and extra vegetables on the menu for dinner. Now to do my push-ups before leaving for dance . . .

Only five, halfway down with elbows wide, and three with elbows in.

Dance was wonderful! And a green salad for dinner, with some leftover pizza. Great and successful day!

Huh? Uh, what?

Like a bear emerging from hibernation (or a coke spree), I'm coming out of the plague that hit the Longstocking house hard this last week. I still have a runny nose and a bit of a cough, but am starting to feel ok again.

So Week Two, Day Five Respawn.

I'll be going to dance class tonight (since I missed Wednesday). I should handily beat my 9,000 step goal today, since I'm back at work and will be dancing tonight. I have vegetables in the fridge at home (including a shredded kale-and-cabbage salad), and I guess I can do the stupid pushups as well.

I'm remembering how much I hate push-up challenges like these. I'll try to keep going, but we'll see about trying to make a better goal for myself next time.

Speed feat for this week: 30 minutes intense shimmy and isolations practice, 2x

Thanks! It's not easy, in January. Blech, January. Then again, we're only a few weeks until the real fun of late winter begins!

Ok, It's week three, Friday, and I am ready to recommit. My freezer is stocked with protein and veggies, the weather is starting to be unseasonably nice, and I'm enjoying dancing a lot, looking forward to doing more. I completely missed last week, including the Speed challenge for the Ranger challenge, but will see about making it up (mostly, because I want to see how dance drilling can fit into my day at work or home.) I can also try to finish out this week strong and move forward.

Checking in on the Ranger Challenge thread . . .

It looks like this is the Strength challenge week, which is awesome, because that means I can succeed if I get out my sledgehammer tonight and tomorrow for two shovelglove sessions.

Sledgehammer! I love a good shovelglove training session

It makes me feel so badass. In fact, I'm wondering why I'm trying to force myself to do exercise I hate (push and pull ups alone), when I could do exercise I love (shovelglove, a full bodyweight circuit). I'm trying to be realistic about what I can fit in my schedule with an infant (Ha. "Schedule." Right.), but I may have set myself up to fail by avoiding what I hate.

Hm.
