Jarric's Aramenté - Jarric visits the Rebels

Jarric Visits the Rebels

Hi everyone, I'm Jarric. My plan for this year involves me visiting all of the guilds, learning what I can learn, and becoming a more well rounded Ranger and a better person. And what better place to start off the year than where I started off on the forums nearly 2 years ago, with the Rebels.

The other thing my plan for the year involves is hitting two goals. 1.Run in the Obstacle Course Racing World Championship (OCRWC) in October. 2.Get out of debt.

So for my Rebel challenge I'll be going back to basics, and (roughly) following the formula of the recommended first challenge provided here.

1 - Meal Prep - 15XP

Prep all 5 of my lunches for work every week. This can be by doing a huge batch on a Sunday and making it last, or by making a little extra each evening and taking it into work the next day. Scored out of 20 lunches.

2 - HIIT - 10XP

I've signed up to try HIIT workouts for the first time, once per week starting Wednesday. Basically until now my gym programming has involved power lifting style gym work, but nothing to really get my heart rate up. I am running, but on separate days to my lifting. With my goal of going to OCRWC I need some work that's more specific to having to haul my body about whilst I'm worn out and my heart is racing. I don't know if this is the answer, but it's worth a try. Scored out of 4.

3 - Hang Out - 10XP

I have a pull up bar at home, and I plan to make use of it every day. This will improve my grip strength, help my core and back strength, and therefore should improve my climbing and my ability to get over obstacles. I have a set routine, and I'll report what I end up doing as I do it, but the main point is just to get on the bar for ~10 minutes every day. Scored out of 28.

Level Up Your Life - Budget - 15XP

As a starting point for saving money this year, I'm setting myself a weekly budget of £50 to spend on leisure. This includes all food and drink out (but not groceries), beer, cinema tickets, entrance to any leisure activities, parking at leisure activities - you get the idea. Any coins of £5 notes left at the end of the week go into a jar, which I can crack open for fitness gear when I hit level 15. Every week should finish within this £50 budget. Scored out of 4.

So them's the goals. A few points of order before we begin:

  • I'll be starting on Monday - I never understood starting challenges on a Sunday - so I'll be running this from 8th January to 4th February.
  • All measurements may be expressed in metric, British imperial, US imperial or Klingon.
  • Please don't ask me how Klingon units of measurement work; I haven't the foggiest.

OMG OMG OMG YES!!  I LOVE THIS JARRIC!!  Of course, you have to be a #Critter to know what's going on, but holy hell this is good stuff.   Following along for sure!

Doty!  Take this down...  "I found a fellow adventurer looking to expand his skill set and knowledge.  I knew as soon as I laid my eyes upon this fellow, that great things would follow his path.   I, of course, being one such great thing that will follow him..."   End chapter.

Welcome to the rebels. I love the idea you have for the budget goal and saving the extras of your fun fund for fitness gear later. I am following along to see how it goes.

Yeah, I now realise I didn't actually explain the title, did I?

Really good to have you here! And thank you for making me grim with that response :D

Also, I'm so excited for the start of the new campaign next week, ahhhhh!

I am half way through 112.  I WILL finish the Vox Machina campaign before Thursday, and I MAAAAY have just asked my Thursday night real D&D group to um, postpone our usual game just this ONCE so I can see the episode live.

So only 10-11 hours left to watch then? Easy!

Why not watch Thursday night's episode with your D&D group, presumably they'd be into it too? Though if you do no spoilers please, I can't justify staying up when it starts at about 3am for me. Especially as I have a character creation session from a new Pathfinder group that evening :D .

=====

Have had a good weekend - climbed on Saturday and got out for a run. Was supposed to be 5 miles but I planned poorly and ended up running about 6.5. On Sunday I got my long run in and went 12 miles, which was knackering but I'm glad to know I can make that distance. Had roast beef for dinner and put some of the leftovers together in a salad for today, so that's 1 goal ticked off for day 1.

This morning I got up with my alarm and hit the gym for Bench day. It went pretty well, and I was suitably worn out at the end. I've just eaten my beef salad brought from home. Tonight I will remember to get on the pull-up bar and cook enough dinner to have leftovers tomorrow. So far, so good.

Adventuring around the guilds, eh? Be careful, I tried to do that but the Rangers seduced me and I never left.

Following so we can learn together how Klingon measurements work.

Update

Monday night I got in 4x8 bent leg raises on the pull-up bar, and made pork chilli for dinner with enough leftovers for Tuesday lunch.

Yesterday I hit snooze on my alarm twice :( . I still got out for my run, but only had time for 5 miles instead of the prescribed 6. Ate the pork chilli for lunch. When I got back I had the unusual experience of doing pull-ups whilst cooking dinner between (a quick carbonara), as I had to get everything done and eat before rushing off with WW to our Pathfinder game. Had a really fun night, we finished preparing out spy mission and are now undercover on a train with a family of half-orcs, an un-dismembered warrior, a gambling dwarf and what we think may be a reverse vampyre (whatever that is!).

This morning I got up and hit my HIIT class (see what I did there?). It was really quite tough from a cardio point of view. Weight wise though the instructor game me 7.5kg (~16.5#) on the bar to start. Then she upped it to 10kg about a minute in because she said it looked too light. At the end she came over to me and told me to use at least 15kg next time as I'm too strong for what she gave me. Which is either a nice compliment or means I look really weak! Either way, looking forward to having another go next week and trying to do better.

Made myself a beef salad for lunch again today, so I'm 3/3 on that goal. I also haven't spent any leisure money since the start of the challenge, which is great. Tonight I'll get on the pullup bar, and then I'm off out to snooker where I shall try to be sensible with my limited money.

Unfortunately I do have to spend a load of money (£175) on my car today to get it partially fixed, and I've got another £175 worth of parts to buy for stuff I'm going to do myself, but that's spending I can't avoid so there we go.

A vampire that stalks people in the daytime and gives them a blood transfusion?

Well done on the HIIT class.

JARRIC, I FINISHED CR!115!!!     All the feelz.  Omg, tears at work.  (That was a bad idea, lol.)

And tonight?    We're missing a player so putting the game on hold, and yes, WATCHING THE NEW CAMPAIGN START!

I had to tell someone who would get the excitement level hitting 9000!

Stats after W1D4

1 - Meal Prep - 4/20

2 - HIIT - 1/4

3 - Hang Out - 4/28

Level Up Your Life - Budget - £28.50/£50 left for the week

So far so good-ish. Yesterday I failed to get up for my run, but it might not be a bad thing. My legs and shoulders were hurting from HIIT as you might expect, but the main thing getting me was my feet! I've never had feet DOMS before, and it's a weird and somewhat unpleasant experience. I guess I haven't actually done that much jumping in a very very long time.

Last night I went to my first session with a new Pathfinder group. The couple of people I didn't already know, including the GM, seem really cool. I'm really excited about my character - I'm playing a human sorcerer but with my sorcerous bloodline as Sylvan so I get an animal companion from first level. So Loki the cindersnake will be making an appearance with me which will be a lot of fun.

When I got home I attempted some pull-ups, but it being late and me having had a few beers at the game I didn't get many done.

This morning I failed to get up for the gym, but tonight I'm entering a bouldering competition so I will just get my workout there instead!

Yes it was good!  Love the new characters!    Sam.  O M G.  Sam.   I think that guy might be my new hero.   Just a lot of great awesome WOOO moments as characters are revealed.  I will not say more.   I only made it through the first 3 hours.  I killed the stream at midnight in favor of not being rotten miserable tired today.      But now, I have this big problem.   I WANT TO PLAY D&D RIGHT NOW.  AND MAKE NEW CHARACTERS!

Oh God that sounds awesome! And I'm out doing things every night until Thursday, so by the time I watch it it'll almost be time for the following one to air  . You've got loads going on though haven't you? How many games are you in/running now?

Thank you! One day we will find a way to play a session with each other! I still need you to DM my first 5e game :P .

Week 1 review

1 - Meal Prep - 5/20 - 100% so far

2 - HIIT - 1/4 - 100% so far

3 - Hang Out - 6/28 - 85.7% so far

Level Up Your Life - Budget - No! Spent nearly £80 instead of my budget of £50.

A mixed week. Friday night's bouldering comp was good fun. I only scored 80 points out of a possible 250 which I'm a little disappointed with, but generally I had a good time. Friday evening I went home and had a couple of beers with WW whilst watching Talks Machina. Then I went bouldering again Saturday morning, just in case anyone was in any doubt that I hate my forearms and feel a need to punish them :P .

I missed my Saturday run. I could have carved out time for it if I'd have been a bit more organised, but I failed to do so. In the evening I had a 50th birthday party to go to for WW's boss, and it was a free bar! True to form I made the most of the free drinks, which left me feeling slightly jaded on Sunday morning.

Sunday I was out all day travelling to and watching the first match of the Snooker Masters. It was really good fun and a really tense quality match. It did however mean that I gave Hopalong some petrol money for driving me, bought lunch out (McDonald's, eugh :( ) and had a couple of beers there, which is where my budget was finally blown for the week. When I got back WW had ordered Dominos pizza (double eugh :( ), so I ate that, watched a bit of Blindspot with WW and crashed out in bed early. No running again which was as expected, but I also missed my hang out goal as I didn't do it early enough and suddenly crashed once I'd sat down with a pizza.

So extra mini-goal for this week - at least 4 alcohol free days. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and at least one other, just because I've had quite a heavy week and my body and wallet could do with recovering.

Finally, I realise that I've talked a lot about Critical Role on here and many people have never seen it. So to fill you in, this clip was my first introduction to Critical Role:

Oi!  You there!  Old bean!

You said a mixed week but you've got two A++++ a high B and then one that needs work.   That's pretty awesome man.   I mean, you can't only count perfect weeks as "good".    Perfect is such a fickle mistress, and she gives no real reward in return.

Sunday was a bit rough, but ugh, man.  Weekends.  They are the nemesis of many.    So next time the weekend hits, maybe... wildshape into a bird when you leap the cliff, instead of a goldfish. :D

I don't see how this is a mixed week. I think your doing great. One bad step isn't going to undo everything. Just keep going and remember that this is a new week and I think you will be putting a closer eye on that budget since you know you didn't do as great last week.

I was going to argue with you, but you know what? It was a good week. Thank you.

The bird is safer, but perhaps the goldfish is more interesting? :P

So far so good-ish for this week. Monday I went to the gym for Squats and OHP, and finally completed all my sets of squats for the first time in what seems like ages! Which is good, because I've deloaded them twice since last year and it was getting a bit daft. I brought lunch to work (admittedly it was leftover pizza from Sunday, but it follows the letter of the goal if not the spirit), and I got my hanging leg raises in. I need to find another way to do these as my bar is well too low to straighten my legs when I hang from it - I might experiment with leg raises from a mid-point hold or top pull-up hold. IDK. In the evening I had snooker so I did end up spending a few quid on table hire and buying my opponent a drink. I did however stick to tap water all night so avoided spending anything on me or drinking anything. I also won my match, thrashed the bloke actually, so that definitely helps.

Yesterday was a run day, so I got to try out my new shoes:

Took a pork and green tomato chutney sandwich to work (made by WW). In the evening I had our Pathfinder game, in which I tried to stop some drunk humans picking a fight with a family of half-orc, ended up beating up all of the half-orcs, and then headed back to the hotel with them before we got seen and arrested. At the end of the session one of the party asked why I didn't just call for the guards, and honestly the thought didn't even cross my mind. Monks man, good at hitting stuff but not always so hot on conflict resolution.

I stuck to water again at the pub, so no money spent and no beer again. I didn't get my pullups in yesterday - no time before Pathfinder and when I got home I decided I was too tired and wimped out and went to bed instead :apathy: .

This morning I got up and got my HIIT workout in, and man it was hard work! It was a lot more cardio focused than the last one, which I'm clearly lacking in. Definitely got me sweating though and reminded me how much any form of jumping has been missing from my training up until now. I brought another sandwich to work today, just need to remember those bar hangs when I get home!
