LVC gets ready for the next challenge

Recommended Posts

So last challenge didn't end so well, the year started with me getting sick and I really didn't feel like setting up a challenge. We've only got two weeks left, so I decided to try getting back into my November-routine.

My focus will be studying. I have to prepare for a test on February the 5th and start researching for my final thesis. Today I got a topic and right after the test I want to hand in a proposal and stuff. So the next four months I'm going to write at my thesis. So I really should get into my study routine and stop being mopey.

To-Do:

- set up some specific goals for the next weeks

- improve my diet further (I lost some weight because of the stomach bug and it would be nice to not gain it all back and the written test is about eating healthy, too.) I'm getting in more fiber with whole grain bread and focused on getting five portions of freggies.

- find a tracking system, that doesn't stress me too much Not yet. I didn't track anything. Only to-do-lists and my Kanban board were used. But I have an Idea for next challenge I want to try out.

- set up my calender for 2018 DONE:)

I'm exercising, because I want to get my stamina and strength. I enjoy medieevil swordmanship,  Tai Chi, yoga, aikido and fire spinning. I'm also a roleplaying nerd and a book worm. Let's fight the procrastination dragon!

Thank you. I'm glad to have you here.

I was thinking about my goals. One goal is to waste less time on the internet. I have this bad habit of checking my webcomics before I start working on the computer. And sometimes that leads to other  unproductive internet cheniganins.  One idea was to install another webbrowser for work. So when I want to look something up, I don't see old tabs, bookmarks, favorits, ... I'm just not sure how to grade that goal. Maybe count days, where I imediatly start working. Later that could be a bonus goal for the productivity goal. (I prefer counting positive changes instead of failures).

For exercise I don't have a specific goal at the moment. I just try to visit some training classes, before the semesterbreak. I found a place, that's quite cheap and only wants an anual fee. So you only pay once a year and don't have to make a longer contract. That could be a good solution for when I'm not a student anymore, too. But they only have yoga, nor tai chi nor aikido.

As far as web browsing goes, is there any way you might be able to lock yourself out of the web browser that has your comics and such in it? Or at least make it more difficult to use? Setting up roadblocks is a legit way to make yourself more productive in places. I know, for myself, I had all these blocks set up on my web browsing at home, but then training ate my life, and so I have to do my writing at work to be productive. Without those blocks in place, productivity... it is not so easy.

But yeah, the impulse toward making things more difficult is a good one. It might have to be a pass/fail, where either you get the new browser and install the new blocks or you don't. A little rough, but given that it results in a net positive, I should hope it would be easy for you. I'm all about easy wins. :)

A yoga studio isn't bad. Yoga as we know it is based on Indian wrestling calisthenics, and it can be very good for a body. Have you found any other places since then, though?

According to my bf there is and he won't hesitate to set these boundaries, if I don't get my stuff done. I remember he did so once before, when I was writing my bachelor thesis six years ago. He blocked specific sites. But I don't want to do that again. Instead I would like to enjoy an occasional tiny piece of chocolate from time to time instead of eating the whole bar at once. (I wish my restrain was as good here, as it is with sweets now. ;) )

Some strategies, that work most of the time:

- working at the library; I don't know if they block specific content, but it would be embrassing to be watched while reading comics at the library, so I haven't done that yet.

- working at my friend's place. She knows I'm supposed to work. So at least when I don't have lunch break, I don't check comics on my laptop. Could be the same motivation like in the library.

- Setting up a new browser at my home computer, wasn't that bad. I like vivaldi. Know I just have to make myself use it more often. The thing is... My home computer is the same I'm gaming with and somehow it's harder to get in a productive mood.

It wasn't an easy win yet, but at least I got most of my stuff done. The test on Monday was another good motivation. At least I haven't been frightened a lot for a while. Makes things a lot easier.

I'm still not sure. It's not really fitting to my goals. All right, I'm doing something, but I also really would like to get better in Tai chi or continue doing Aikido. Me and K had a look at their website last week. He didn't have to say much. I realised a combination of yoga, arobics, dancing and new age stuff wasn't my way to go. I decided to try doing some yoga and tai chi at home and save some more money for a membership at a place, were I can do the stuff I enjoy doing. So starting next week, I'll be doing another game ^^

I want to set up workouts at the beginning of each week and for ech missed workout, I put 3€ in a piggy bank. With that money, I'm searching for a place. So if I do my sun salutations, practice my tai chi , do the eight brocades, ... Regularly., I'm fine. But if I don't get my training in, I'll know how much I need to search for a place soon.

Another good option for work and personal on the same computer is to create a new user account for work, so you're not logged into the account with all your games and things.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

@sarakingdom Thanks for the tipp. I'll see how it goes, before I make more changes.

I already set up a new challenge. So no more reflections in this thread.
