Chris-Tien's Mediterranean Adventure

Inspired by @Elastigirl and her declaration of a prestige class, I think it’s time to make a change and switch not only classes but themes.  This one holds the promise of costumes and actual weapons …..  I’m going to be a Forester, counting this as a prestige class based on the Rangers.  A combination of trail hiking/running, ranged weapons, protecting the Forest, and dispensing the Crown’s justice (and mercy).  Part SCA and part D&D/Pathfinder.

im-making-this-up-as-i-go.jpg

After 30 years of hanging around the fringes of the Society for Creative Anachronism, I finally became a sustaining member a couple of years ago.  It’s been a bit of a rocky start since my local group make a bunch of frost giants look welcoming.  Seriously, no one can turn a cold shoulder like these guys.

Thor-Frost-Giants.png

But, I’ve been doing my thing and persisting.  They’ve been acting like it’s the beginning of Macbeth, but I’ve worked around them and made other friends … And suddenly they needed someone to step in as president (known as a seneschal in SCA terms), and I agreed to do it - against my better judgement - at least temporarily (since I may be moving again …. More later.)

While I await the actual appointment by the Crown, I am going on a pilgrimage to southern Europe.  As it happens, we’ve been planning this cruise for months … and it does just happen to end in Rome.  We already have tickets to spend a day at the Vatican.   So …. It’s a pilgrimage.

original.gif

Now, this cruise could be an excuse to go back to old habits.  Eat a bunch of refined carbs - especially chocolate.  Sit around on lounge chairs all day, getting sauced while I read trashy novels.  BUT NO!! I’ve decided that this is a perfect time to take care of myself and treat myself to lots of fresh fruits and veggies and good fish!!!  So, my eating goals start today, pro-rated as necessary.  I’m going to strive to eat more freggies than I did last challenge and average 28 per week.  And add that I will eat an average of 2 servings of fish per week (not fried!).  That’s it for the nutrition front.

Exercise-wise ….  I figure a Forester, like any good Ranger, will cover ground and be ready to deal with whatever is lurking in the bushes.  I already have a solid cardio foundation and don’t need an excuse to keep running, but I’ll add a bit of forestry flavor and commit to walking outside AND capturing portals and territory in Ingress daily.  I can do that even on the cruise since we have daily shore excursions.  Plus … some sort of strength training OR weapons training twice per week.  I’m leaving it a bit vague because weather will have a huge impact on what I do each week.  If the weather is good, I can get to archery practice.  And if the weather starts turning really fair, we can start axe and knife (and spear) throwing again outside.

Finally, the (Royal) Forester usually dispensed the King’s Law within the area of his or her writ.  And I need to read through at least 5 handbooks in order to get familiar with the rules of my new role.  So … the goal here is just to print them, read them, and make notes so that I'm ready for our first dance practice in March.

Fun new theme and challenge. Hoping one of your challenge goals includes taking pictures on your trip so we can all live vicariously through you.

so you orientation is Lawful, good?

oh boy.  I was pretty much set on announcing to the whole guild that I will become the Rangerly Rogue;  orientation (very) Chaotic, good

that make me something of an  opponent perhaps a "robin hood" rogue to hide around in the forest defying any 'foresters' to catch him.

Just do me one favor, then?  if you Do catch me; illegally making merry in the king's wood, would you share your cruise pics.

we can then offer our stereotypical exchange once I have got done jellin' over your most incredible voyage. ty

First! and following. I'm loving that the forums went live while Sloth was at work.

New challenge day is so stressful trying to keep up, it was almost a relief to miss the first fury of posts.

Oooohhhh - I see a PvP coming on!  I'll have to see what you're working on for the challenge.

Yes, I'm going lawful good, although interpreting that "good" as tempering law with mercy.  The early laws regarding English Royal Forests were draconian and punitive in the extreme.  I'll keep the roads safe, but I'm not going to maim someone for merely disturbing a deer.

There will be photos.  It's something of a relief to be traveling without (small) child this time.  I'd forgotten how much planning around a kid's interests, picky food preferences, and ease of boredom had influenced the very few vacations that we took.

I can relate to that. I enjoyed vacations with my son when he was little, but it was work. We've gone on vacations now with him as an adult, and it's just so much fun

Currently, we're in St. Tropez and the weather is lovely.  I think being here in the off-season is wonderful, but I wish I'd brought some warmer clothes.  Yesterday's trip up to Avignon to see the Papal Palace (and museums) was very chilly and breezy.  Many of the historical buildings are, of course, not heated.  Duh!!!!   So, I did part of my pilgrimage, and I suffered a smidge.  But the art in the museum was amazing (on loan from the Louvre!).

We've been walking just a ton and taking a lot of steps.  I'll post pics when we get home since the wi-fi is a bit spotty on the ship.

I'd intended to start recording progress as of last week, but I'm not going to beat myself up on scoring last week or this.  My days are messed up with the flights and time zone shift.

Food on the ship is fabulous.  I'm having to be mindful.  Not that there's not plenty of fruit and veggies and fresh fish ..... there are, and I'm eating them.  But the wait staff is always offering more wine.  And the desserts are too too tempting.  So.  I'm enjoying but trying to moderate.

Cardio is going great.  Also a bit chopped up because of travel - I didn't get a long run in last week.  But we walk a lot daily, and I did get in a run on the treadmill today.  I started on deck, but there were too many people - and some spots are pretty narrow - so went inside and rocked out.

I haven't slipped in any strength training yet and will have to do that, but there are weight machines on board, and I have a body weight workout as backup.  Obviously, no weapons training is available.

Reading SCA books.  Nope.  But I did get an email from a prospective new member!!!!

Day 6 of Vacation

And we're in Monaco!!  No, I am not going to emulate @Steve by going to the Casino.  For one thing, I don't think I'd look good in a tux.  And it doesn't open until 2pm, at which point, I'll be on a walking (and step climbing!!!!) tour of the city state. It's beautiful and warm.

I'm exerting extreme discipline by eating small amounts, eating freggies and protein, skipping most sweets, and walking a lot.  The plates at the buffet are huge - I think I could go sledding on one - so reasonably sized portions look lost.

Hubby and I had to take a break from each other after breakfast.  I ate slowly, but he gobbled down two bowls of oatmeal and a big serving of ham ... after complaining that his clothes must have shrunk in the wash yesterday.  I made the mistake of pointing out that he needs to be more mindful of how much he's eating and how fast.  We decided to spend our morning doing separate activities.

So, I'm here, catching up with you nerds before I take the camera up on deck to get some pictures of the super yachts in harbor.  I swear, we are docked next to the yacht of some super villain - all sleek and black.

Nope.  It had been absolutely lovely all morning.  High of 63 degrees.  But when we looked back over the bay, we saw the rain coming in.  I at least had my jacket, but I hadn't brought an umbrella.  Oh well.  We had a good laugh, and we were at the end of the tour.

Oh Monaco! As young girl I loved reading about princess Grace (and Diana). And the rest of your vacation sounds just divine. Couldn't help but smile when you had to spend some time away from hubby. That comment was obviously not appreciated. I'm super impressed with all the self control you have. :loyal:

Oh, I had loved reading about those two princesses!!  We did get to see the palace and where one of Grace's children (Stephanie?) currently lives.  Actually, not too fancy, but I may be getting numbed to big, Gothic/Romanesque buildings.

Self control slipped a bit yesterday; so I have to watch it a bit starting today.  They serve wine like water on the boat .... not a good way to maintain self-control at dinner!!!

Thank you.  It's been great and has restored my confidence that we can navigate Europe.  I'm starting to think that Norway would be a great cruise, but we might do without the guided tours.

The used to be a rebel princess. If I'm not mistaken a South African swimmer is married to the prince? I don't really keep up with the stories, but I remember it was a big thing that a prince married a South African :D

I have all the confidence that you'll press the last bit of control into use w.r.t. the wine :P
