I can't believe I'm still here!! Wow! I didn't give up, I completed my first challenge, and I'm actually proud of myself! :D

So.. hey! I'm Dawn aka Shy.. I'm super shy. ;)

My first challenge goals were...

Exercise every single day. (Week two of January and I've managed this since the 3rd. W00t.)

Drink more water.

Eliminate Caffeine.

Work up the courage to go for a walk or go to the apartment gym. (Super scary for cowardly me!)

Here are my Feb-Mar goals....

Main Goal

I should say "lose all this excess weight" but I'm going to say TRY to lose 15lbs by the end of April for a start.

Here's what I'm thinking for the Feb-Mar challenge...

Smart Goals

  1. Exercise every single day (Again?! Yesss... because I can.)
  2. Keep track of my calories (Aiming for around 1550 or so. Might adjust later.)
  3. Stop going to bed with dishes in the sink (I HATE that I keep doing this!)
  4. Try to get any amount of dishes done before bed! (No joke, this has been my most difficult challenge.)

I might add another goal later but, if I'm honest, I've got some stress on me at the moment and I think that's enough for right now. I've already started counting my calories on Cronometer. Believe it or not my most difficult goal might be number 3. I'm SO tired every single day I usually fall asleep holding my daughter on the sofa after dinner. (I'm not proud of this.) I need to make the next day less stressful for myself and do future me a favor and get the kitchen clean. (I feel more stressed when things are messy, which they usually are.) As much as I'd like to add "get under 220" or "do x number of crunches", etc. I think this is a reasonable goal set for me.

Good luck on YOUR challenges!!! I can't wait to see all of you meet your goals!! :D

Hey Shy, welcome to Rebel! You've got some great goals listed, and I'm especially glad to see you looking ahead and planning a challenge load that is in-line with your actual bandwidth. I don't like to see people biting off too much at once and getting burnt out, so good on you for planning to be stressed! ;)

1. You totally can! Get it, Shy!

2. With calories that low you should see some obvious progress pretty quick. If you plateau, add some calories back in for a week or two and then lower them again. Hazard, the guild leader from the Level 1 guild, is super good at figuring this stuff out and is a great resource for you if you have any questions.

3. Is there anything you can do to give yourself a little more energy to get to this in the evenings? Maybe just having it as a challenge goal is enough (that's often the case for me) but if you're too exhausted to move you might need another push of some sort. Any ideas? Or do you think you'll be ok as-is?

Best of luck on your challenge!

Thank you SO much for the vote of confidence!! :D

I have no idea how to stop from crashing at the end of the day but I've found I have pretty decent willpower when I set my mind to it. It doesn't help that my day starts at 5 in the morning. ;)

I might have to have my husband chip in around dinner and make sure he'll keep our little one occupied, that might help. -fingers crossed- Wish me luck!!

Good luck! That's a great idea with leveraging your husband to help out, whether it's minding the little one or getting him to do the dishes himself some nights!

5 in the morning is a little early even for me, and I am a proud Morning Person. It's fine for summer, I guess. I usually rise shortly before the sun, so 5 would be appropriate in the summer months. But not just in general. That's... urgh. At this time of year that would give me almost an hour and a half of cold and dark. No thanks.

Regarding dishes, I am masterful at ignoring them, but one thing I've found helps is to just wash them immediately. I often clean my breakfast pots and pans before I even sit down to eat, just as part of "plating" my meal. With lunch and dinner, I usually don't eat everything I cook, so I'll leave the leftovers in the pots or pans to cool and then clean dishes as part of putting the leftovers away after eating. As far as plates and bowls and cutlery, we have a dishwasher, so I have no helpful advice on that.

The best way to be assured that when you are at your very lowest and temptation to fail to Adult is at its highest, is to cultivate a routine such that your default action is one step better than it once was. What do you want to become second nature? Take a tiny step toward that thing--just one.

Recruiting your husband to help share the load of your budding habits stacks the deck in your favor. Better yet, it will get him involved in your improvement and that mutually beneficial on multiple levels.

Agree completely. If you feel sluggish or fatigued, bumping up even 150 calories on average for a week or two is a good plan to keep your body from coming to the conclusion that you are starving and entering power saver mode.

Seconding this. We don't have kids to factor in, so I don't know how applicable this is, but Fiancé and I have a system where we take turns to cook dinner and the other person washes up after, so we both get a chance to take it easy in the evenings.

Otherwise, I can recommend washing up during any downtime while cooking dinner (again, I know kids affect downtime a lot!) but for example if the potatoes are already in the oven and you've got 15 min before the chicken goes in, do a quick batch of washing in that time. Even if you don't get it all done, you'll have made a start and it'll already look and feel so much better!

My back was really killing me yesterday after all those air bikes and inverse crunches but I'm glad to say I got those bad boys done! I'll be waking up to a clean kitchen! Yay! I know it sounds lame and I swear our apartment isn't a wreck, I promise, but at the end of the day I'm always so wiped. Age is probably a factor here as well as stress. I'm an obese 43 year old who's never exercised consistently, ever. My calories are always on the low side by the way, I think that's just my overall diet. The hubs kept Twyla occupied while I tidied up after dinner. I very rarely ask him to help with cooking or housework during the week being he works very hard all day and I'm home. If our roles were reversed I know he'd pick up the slack at home. ;)

I know our next challenge hasn't officially started but slacking the week before for no good reason didn't appeal to me. I just hope my body will cooperate tomorrow and let me hop back on the treadmill. I'm a bit limpy and wimpy with aching toes and my bionic ankle is giving me a hard time. <_< I might just start on the treadmill slowly and see how long I can walk. I'd really like to get my 2+ miles in today.

Positive things for this week this far...

  • My family is proud of me and even my little girl wants to go with me to the gym all the time now. (She loves the treadmill for some reason, when she's not reading.)
  • We're having a game night this weekend and we might get in a game of CAH or start a DnD game! WooHoo!
  • I finally started a project I was putting off.
  • A friend is letting me borrow his George Foreman grill to make grilled tofu tomorrowwww! Yasss!!
  • Annddddd.... I've managed to write down every morsel I've eaten without fail.  Go me!

I swear the only reason I haven't eaten any of my daughter's Valentine chocolate is because

then I'd have to write that son of a bitch down on my cronometer.

A little tip to all those of you who may one day but haven't yet had children. The very moment you have that baby they are the center of your world but don't do what I did. I focused entirely on her, which is good, but I neglected to take care of myself. I put on a lot of weight and this weight does NOT like to come off easily. Here I am 7 years after and I'm still carrying this 'baby weight." You'll need to take care of yourself to be there for your children in the future. She's going to need you so please don't fall victim to laziness and procrastination like I have.

Sorry, Moms can't help but give unsolicited advice! Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!!!  :D

I'm going to try very hard to sleep once again.. for today is a school day... *cringe*

Shy welcome to the rebels. I completely understand where you are coming from since I did the same thing. I had kids and put myself last. I will eat later, I will exercise later, I will take care of me later. I have 2, one is in high school now and the other in 4th grade. I have no "its baby weight" excuses left. It is time take care of us so we can be around to care for them. They may not need us as much at this age, but they will need other things, like someone to cheer them on when it gets hard.

As far as the kitchen thing, I will give you a small bit of unsolicited advice from one mom to another. Don't start with the whole kitchen. Once I get my challenge up (Hopefully today) you will see that I can't just say "I will keep the kitchen clean." I don't have that time. However a few challenges ago, I started with "keep the island clean". I had to clean it before I went to bed every night because it gave me a clean space to make lunches at in the morning. And it took 2 minutes. Then another challenge was Island and peninsula. Then it was my desk, and the island and the peninsula, then the table and its snowballing into more and more "places". Since I started doing it, its not taking as much energy to start with so I can build up to it.

Although I understand the tired part. I am up at 5 everyday as well with the kids and its hard. Especially when all you want to do is lay in bed for another 5 minutes. I am here to cheer you on.

I will keep that in mind! I would honestly be happy with myself to avoid waking up to dishes for a solid week. Any positive strides will do so I never expect perfection from myself but progress. ;)

update

Looks like no walking today. I was limping all the way to school and back. For some reason my Frankenankle is really bothering me. I can't tell if its swollen but it hurts when I flex my foot up and down and its very very slightly warm. I think I might trying to bike at the gym today and see how it goes. I really wanted to walk too... :(

Then make that your 5 minutes. Make the goal "I will have dishes done before I go to bed" It doesn't matter what the counters look like, or the table, you can always just focus on that one part and then go from there.

I am sorry your foot is misbehaving. I hope it feels better soon. Sometimes the best laid plans, get thrown out a window because the body says "nope, not today." Take it easy and hopefully the gym will help.

Well I made halfway to the gym, limping all the way, and I decided if it hurts this bad just walking there I should give it a rest. I did my 20 min stretch but mostly I tried to put my foot up most of the day. So annoying but it honestly feels slightly better after laying off of it for a bit. Probably just swelling around the plates and screws. Hopefully it's not micro-fractures or anything like that.

Hoping tomorrow I'll get a chance to get more of a workout than limping around. ;)

Resting it is the smart thing to do. It could just be yelling at you from overuse, in which case trying to push through the pain just makes it worse.  Taking something for inflammation could help too. In the meantime, you can do a workout that doesn't involve flexing your foot.

Good luck!

I rested my ankle as much as I could yesterday and, after walking my daughter to school this morning, it didn't give me any trouble. Yes!! I miss my hour long walk on the treadmill. Right now I'm listening to Ready Player One but I'm thinking next I'll try The Hobbit or Hitchhiker's Guide or maybe The Princess Diarist. :D

Oh no! I hope you feel better. Panic attacks are the worst. Do you know what caused it?

The several hours of housework definitely qualify! The panic attack may have got your heartrate up but it also probably coincided with some intense stress hormone load so maybe not so healthy. Deep breaths, Shy!

I don't have attacks often at all but it wasn't a good morning. I had forgotten something important and then, and I know this sounds weird but,  the heat kicked on and I was stressing more and more and got overheated and BOOM. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" and lots and lots of tears. Something happens when I get too hot and stressed. It's awful. It runs in my family. That's part of what exercise is for though.. helping with anxiety. Speaking of exercise I need to get back to work scrubbing toilets and mopping floors. I'll be fine I just feel really guilty for ruining the morning for everyone. :(

I hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way Shy, since I just wanted to lighten the mood. Luckily I only had 2 panic attacks in my whole life, but I know it's neither fun nor funny when it happens. But now that this stressful part is over my way to cope with it is humor. Just felt that I needed to clarify that I feel for you ...

...so...

...back to housework! B) Since I agree with Wobbbegong that if done properly (thoroughly) it definitely qualifies as workout! And my appartement could use a good cleaning (I should have made this part of my challenge!)

Luckily I only had 2 panic attacks in my whole life, but I know it's neither fun nor funny when it happens. But now that this stressful part is over my way to cope with it is humor. Just felt that I needed to clarify that I feel for you ...

No, no! You're fine! Don't worry about it! It sucks and it's just part of having anxiety disorder. Luckily it's pretty rare for me. I probably shouldn't even mention it but it's not something I'd post on facebook and wanted to be able to tell someone. Does that make sense? Anywho, it's totally cool.

So I was able to compose myself and later (yesterday) I was able to come have lunch with my daughter at her school. She didn't seem bothered at all about that morning. She was quite happy to get extra attention, not to mention extra goodies from home too. ;)

I don't know if I'll have time to walk today, I realized I'm nearly doing a full 5k everyday and it takes me an hour. I'm just looking forward to seeing our friends and playing some nerdy nerdy games and relaxing. :)

And here's a meme that makes me happy... :D
