Lateral Planet: The Hunger Games

Had a major level-up-your-life win today: upgraded to a full-time position at work!! For a few years I've been on this bizarre arrangement where I work full time but only for nine months of the year, so I'm really looking forward to actually getting paid all year round!!

Bananas for breakfast, then salad for lunch, and I made a tasty Mongolian beef stir fry for dinner. And there'll be ice cream to celebrate with later.

I've noticed lately I seem to be snacking a lot less lately, and I think that's contributing a lot to my recent weight loss. Like I think my actual meals are pretty healthy, but it's all the chips and chocolate in between that have been doing some damage. I think my chocolate limitation goal has been helping. Like today I could have really gone for something sweet, but I made myself wait because it was just after lunch. I realised I was just bored-hungry and not actual-hungry, and the cravings soon passed. Just gotta learn to be patient (easier said than done!!)

Another good day. Yoghurt for brekky, leftover stir fry for lunch (no pics because it never looks quite as appetising the next day even if it still tastes as good). Snacked on some carrots in the afternoon for an energy boost. Dinner was sausages and salad.

I hadn't done any exercises in the last two days; took Wed off because my arm was so sore, and it was better by Thurs but I took it easy just in case. Had a nice long walk this arvo and will try to do more this weekend. Got another hectic week coming up so I want to build up a streak!

Thanks! Super excited, especially with a house and a wedding to save for. I mean, I love my job but I'm all about the money right now ;)

Today was a bit mixed, nutrition-wise. Weetbix and banana for breakfast, because Aussie kids are Weetbix kids. Then I went to the mall for lunch, shopping and movies, so I had to be smart. Went right past the food court and found a nice cafe for lunch, which was amazing, and I skipped the choc top. So I started well!

But then it was my turn to make dinner and again I messed up the portion sizes. I thought I'd found a lamb rack small enough for two people. I was wrong. And now I feel overfull and gross. I mean, there was also salad and potatoes, and it was a pretty healthy meal (and I got to use my great new roasting pan, yay) but it was just way too big. I have kitchen scales, but it might be time to start using them for dinners as well as for fancy baking.

Also I had an annoying time shopping. I wanted to get some new running shoes as a reward for finishing the Zombies Run 5K training app. I even had a discount voucher to use and I knew exactly what I wanted. But it's one of those fancy shops where there are only display models on the shelf and you have to flag someone down to get the right size, which means if everyone's busy you either wait around for ages or leave empty handed. So I left. I'll try again another day though; I earned that reward, dangit!

Also, Black Panther is still excellent the second time around :)

Very rainy today, apparently a decent chunk of the city is flooded! We were OK but it was way too wet to be goong outside. Will have to try squeeze in some squats or something before bed. I won't get any opportunities for a jog this week so that might be the routine for a little bit.

Bananas for breakfast, but chips for lunch, so on the whole the day was sort of even. At least the chips were baked at home rather than deep-fried at the takeaway place; it could've been worse. Fiancé' baked some chicken and potatoes for dinner, with salad and garlic bread. And I had some ice cream just for funsies. Also, made a big batch of spag bol for lunches this week, including bonus veggies!

Week Two wrap-up: I feel like I didn't really give my all this week. I followed all the nutrition rules, but I slacked off a fair bit with exercises. One skipped day was due to injury, but another two were just because I fell asleep. Once I'm sleepy enough to conk out on the couch halfway through a movie, there's no going back; the day is well and truly done.

Poor time and portion management aside, I somehow still managed to lose half a kilo! So now I'm exactly 80kg, teetering on the edge of my main goal for this challenge. I already know this is going to be a busy week so it's going to be a struggle, but I'm determined to maintain momentum!

Well done! You've built a decent foundation to help power you through this rough week coming, so you should be good. Being busy, your time management may be less of an issue. I always find that personally... the busier I am, the more I seem to manage to squeeze in extra things. I will never understand it. I think it might just be about having a clear goal and knowing what has to be done in the busy moments and then realizing you can do all that so why not this one other thing too... I'm not sure.

Congrats on both your promotion and on your weight goal, that's awesome!

Good luck this week!

Thanks heaps!! I know exactly what you mean. It's like when I'm busy I know I'll have to plan everything properly or nothing will get done; whereas if I have all the time in the world I kind of just wing it and half of the stuff gets done and the other half stays on the to-do list ;)

Oops, forgot to check in last night but making up for it now. Yesterday was Weetbix for breakfast and my spaghetti bolognaise. I made some jam drop biscuits on the weekend and I'm super glad I brought some of those to work because I really wanted a snack in the afternoon! Finished work just after all the healthy takeaway places were shut, so I went straight home to make myself a noodle soup for dinner. Fiancé had offered to order me a pizza but I politely declined.

It was another day for last-minute exercises, though. Did a couple of squats and some pushups against the bathroom sink while I was getting ready for bed. It's not much, but better than nothing!

Tuesday was pretty full-on, @J3NN would be proud of my planning skills ;) Fueled up the car, battled morning traffic, got a well-overdue haircut, got those shoes I was eyeing off on the weekend, and then went to work for 11 hours. Unfortunately, I was asleep pretty much as soon as I got home, so no exercises got done.

Had bananas for brekky and then since I was in town I treated myself to some pancakes for brunch. I shouldn't have, though, since they were actually pretty awful. Then it was spag bol for dinner, which I skillfully kept off my favourite white top. And when I got home complaining of chocolate cravings, Fiancé produced from behind his back a tub of chocolate mousse and a long spoon! He's the best :D:D

Omg, your finace sounds amazing and so sweet!  Any guy that can magically produce chocolate mousse to cure chocolate cravings is a keeper!  :D

This looks delicious, and I want to eat it.  What is it?  Are they pitas or quesadillas stuffed with some yummy concoction?  Can you feed me?  I am now wandering back through the rest of your thread and drooling over your food pics.  Your pictures are so pretty and each plate looks so inviting and appetizing.  :D  I am now going to stalk follow your thread for your food porn to cheer you on!  :P

I wish I could claim responsibility, but that was a lunch I had at a cafe the other day. I think it was a pita cut in half, filled with delicious things and toasted. The delicious things were chicken, pumpkin, tomatoes, feta and basil pesto.

Thanks! Honestly I've only sharing the best meals. The pasta I've been having for lunches this week is very tasty and healthy but not very photogenic ;) What I've really taken away from this exercise is Fiancé and I are both rubbish at portion sizes. I've heard that a factor in society's weight gain is that our standard dinner plates are bigger than they used to be, and even then our plates are overflowing!

And yes, he's the absolute best and I'm definitely keeping him!! :D:D

Sigh, Wednesday night I was too knackered to post OR exercise again. Had bananas and spag bol again, boring, but at least I was able to go home for dinner! Fiancé did a peppery beef roast with potatoes and salad, and then there was ice cream too.

Weighed in for the start of the month and I'm up half a kilo, but I'm not concerned. I know I've done a lot less exercise and eaten a lot more ice cream than usual this week so far. I know what's happening and how to correct it! Thankfully today is my last long day of the week, so I should be back to a more normal, workout-friendly routine before long!

Ohh, that sounds so good!  I never would've thought to put pumpkin in there, but I could see that being very tasty.  :D

I'm sure it's a contributing part of the problem.  America is especially bad with this.  ...Hawaii, where I was born, is one of the worst. (When you have a culture of more food=hospitality=higher status, you're going to run into weigh gain problems.)  >_>  When I've traveled abroad, portions looked so much tinier, and I was afraid I was going to have to buy two of some things to be full, but it was surprisingly enough.  It's so crazy how your brain can just trick you like that sometimes.

Good on you for keeping your check points and using them as evaluation/reflection points!  :)   It's good to have the data and be able to plan next action steps just like you're doing.  And yay for no more long days!  :D

I would also recommend taking all those delicious things, plus some bacon and cream, and putting it on pasta. That's one of my favorites :)

I had that experience in Japan; because a meal was usually split into several bowls it looked like less food, but we never went hungry! Thanks for the heads up, if I ever get to visit Hawaii I'll be alert!

My thoughts exactly! It keeps me honest and helps me adjust my behaviour week by week to see what's working and what's not. I was also offered overtime today, but as much as I want the money right now I mostly just want sleep ;)

Thursday was another day of inaction. I have been doing a fair bit of walking lately, but since it's just A-to-B walking and not fun walking I'm not considering that exercise for the purposes of the challenge.

Irritatingly, I'm also getting that tickle in the throat that says I'm getting a cold. Fortifying myself with strepsils and water and hoping for the best at this point.

Nutrition is still going strong. Bananas and spag bol were breakfast and lunch, and then it was my turn to do dinner but I didn't have the energy to put effort in so I just made chicken burritos out of the kit. Hooray for lazy-tasty dinners! I think I'm not really missing the food aspect of fast food, but I am missing the convenience. The trap is that if I take advantage of that convenience too often, then suddenly I'm not eating healthily often enough!

Looks like you have a very meal focused goals :D wanna become my meal buddie? i'm searching someone to share my meals with, cause i often exagerate with portions. Also i discovered that the best way to not drink calories is to avoid completely juices, cola and all that stuff

You can't drink it if you don't buy it

Yeah I've been doing pretty well at the liquid calories, it really hasn't been an issue and I've been doing this for over a month now. I'm allowing myself coke zero because there's no sugar of course but it's still a pick-me-up. Otherwise it's just water, and plenty of it. Although this week I have rather missed the comfort of a hot, sweet, milky cuppa!

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually really surprised at how well I've done without sugary drinks. One of my favourite "treat yo self" vices is a large chocolate frappe from McDonald's, but since I'm not doing fast food either I can avoid temptation. That said, the first day after the end of this challenge is my birthday and I ain't holding myself back then!!

Super proud of myself right now, managed not to fall asleep on the couch as soon as I got home and went for a 5K walk/jog! Didn't break any records, but it felt really good to stretch my legs after a week of inactivity. Will celebrate with Supernatural and sleep... just so much sleep

Also if I don't check in much this weekend it's not because I'm slacking off. I'll be on a minibreak in Melbourne and too busy stuffing my face with Italian food and rocking out to Queen live in concert! Man, this week has been tough but I'm well rewarded :):)

That sounds like an amazing weekend!

With portion sizes, the biggest thing that helped me (aside from smaller plates), was getting over "you must eat everything on your plate!" If the portion is a bit bigger or more filling than expected, it means more leftovers. Sometimes I'll be stuck with leftovers that aren't enough on their own for a full meal though. But then I'll try to get creative with using it as an ingredient or side for a new meal. Learning to not eat everything isn't easy though, and something I'm still working on.

I know exactly what you mean! When I was a teenager I very often would have seconds at dinner or just a whole pizza to myself, and it took me a little while to learn that I no longer have the metabolism of a teenager and what I used to consider a normal serving is suddenly way, way too much food. Often when Fiancé cooks I'll have to pass a bunch of meat onto his plate. Gotta work on just not putting that much on the plate to start with!

Had an amazing weekend!! Broke a few of my rules but I think I did OK. Exercise was a whole lot of walking; we skipped the trams and did maybe 12K on Saturday and 8K on Sunday.

Saturday was Weetbix for breakfast and bickies and OJ on the plane. Had a Lygon St lunch of giant agnolotti and a lemon squash. So yeah, some liquid calories were had. Then we found the most amazing café, and I know if I weren't already too full my chocolate challenge would've been out the window too. Instead I had some dragonfruit sorbet, which I didn't even know was a thing but it now my favourite thing. Had half a burger for dinner (it was way too big for me) and skipped dessert (still too full)

Sunday we went back to that fancy café on an empty stomach for pancakes and more juice. For lunch Fiancé was craving Maccas and honestly I didn't fight him very hard, but you know what? I really don't like McDonald's as much as I think I do, and I don't intend to have it again in the near future. I then decided it had been too long since I had a vegetable, so we just had a big salad and garlic bread for dinner.

I'll do a proper wrap-up of the week tomorrow when I'm less kmackered. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of delicious meals, so here's Brian May being adorable with a selfie stick ;)

Week Three wrap-up: not a hugely successful week, but it's not the end of the world.

Food log: 7/7

No fast food: 6/7

No liquid calories: 5/7

Chocky only after dinner: 7/7

Exercise every day: 3/7

5-min walk every day: 7/7

Also, weighed myself this morning and I'm up another half-kilo since Thursday. It's no biggie; since it came on so quickly it ought to come off quite quickly too, as long as I actually follow my rules this week.

Problem is, that might not happen. That throat tickle from Friday thankfully left me alone over the weekend but now I've got a full-on cold. I'm definitely not up for any exercise, and nothing tastes good or is pleasant to swallow. I guess technically I might lose some weight as a result, but that is really not ideal. Especially since I had some delicious laksa for lunch and I didn't even enjoy it :(

Monday I bought a cup of fruit salad for brekky, some jam drop biscuits, and laksa for lunch. Dinner was Fiancé's lamb chops with salad.

Today was pretty rough, I've been on bed rest and feeling weak. Not much appetite, so I just had a couple of bananas, a carrot and a stick of celery throughout the day. Had one and a half chicken fajitas for dinner, so at least I've had a bit of protein today.

Really keen for this to be over with, being ill is so darn boring!!
