Jedi's Moving Castle

Recommended Posts

So my theme this go-round is going to be Studio Ghibli. It's very calming and good, which I need this month after the travesty that was my January.

In short:

- I finished my first challenge in several months.

- I lost my job

- I didn't find another job

- Then I found a new job but I'm jumping from a career job to a waitressing job

- I started therapy and ADD meds

- I stopped both thanks to losing my job, source of income, and insurance

BUT. I'm going to keep going. Keep trying. Keep working.

444fdd173af08746998b8641301bc90b.jpg.740ed58ced5c7f8eb25197c8a919c475.jpg

So I'm going to take myself back to the basics, things I direly need. Just some basic re-training. And I'm going to be as encouraged as possible. Just do the best I can and work hard. That's how I feel about my waitressing job. I'm going to be the best waitress I can be, allow myself to learn those new skills.

Alright, so goals.

Goal 1- 2 Strength workouts each week

Time to get back to the basics. I'm going to go dig my spreadsheet back up and scale everything back so that I can get back into shape. I will have plenty of time to get that done each week. I enjoy working out, so I need to get back to it.

Goal 2- Stretching 3x/week (not counting workout days)

239af889b680c4951fa8444369559b37.jpg.ea4f65c40f7b3fd07f15144f70f54208.jpg

I need to stretch more. Keep stretching. Do better. Keep working. I can do it!

Goal 3- Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.

Kiki-Falls-Unto-The-Bed-Tired-In-Kikis-D

I'm going to be in bed by 11pm OR get 8 hrs/night. Unless there's a very good reason why I got less, I'm going to make that a daily goal. A required goal.

Goal 4- Work on your site for 2 hrs/week

7aee87a9478e20a322978ed9331230c7.gif.154e4ce5e1c1d3dfcc9642b76b9750f1.gif

I want to get a portfolio site straightened out and set up. I can't do that if I'm not working on it. So I want to get 2 hours each week on it.

So hopefully this challenge works out well. Happy February everyone!

I love this so much.    I have seen all of Ghibli stuff, but not in a while now.  Those quotes triggered such a positive response for me, even just reading them.      The goals are spot on, and I think really well thought and perfect for you right now.

Girl, you got this.   You already have done so well, and pushed through and kept moving.   It is most definitely hard on your side of the set, and you might feel like you're treading water, but trust those watching from the other side.  You are doing GREAT.

Thanks :) I appreciate the feedback. And I love Ghibli but I've never thought to get it in a theme. I really thought of it when I realized I wanted sleep in my challenge and the quote from Kiki's Delivery Service: "More sleep, thank you!"

Again, thanks <3 That's beyond good to hear :)

Today's update:

So my new job is going to be intensely exhausting. I only spent 3 hours running food (basically you take the food from the kitchen to the table- people specifically do that so that's why your server doesn't always bring your food), but I was/am so tired. I'm super nervous but much less so now. My manager basically took me aside at the end of the night and said nice things like "Breathe" and "No one is going to bite you" and "you are going to make mistakes, that's okay" and "it can take you six days or it can take you twenty. We are going to train you." So that was nice.

Intuitive Eating is going to be difficult on that, I don't think I can eat on shift. I'm not exactly sure though. I'll figure it out though.

I was a server for a time so I can assure you that your body will adapt to the regime!  Seriously.  My first few days I was so beat up, and my feet were screaming and I was miserable - but by a few weeks in, it was the new normal!

You should still get a break while at work- though it can be hard to juggle when you have tables still active, but check with your manager and just be straight with them.  "Is it cool if I have a lunch bag I bring and grab a bite of a snack at a point during my shift?  I don't do super well if I go too long without some fuel."

Give yourself time to learn and adjust, but you'll get there, I know you will.

Thanks :) Honestly today I just feel like I'm a couple days after lifting with not enough sleep. Not awful, but kinda tired and a little worn down.

Right now I"m still training so I should have time. I think I'm going to make a point to eat before I start running tables because the food smell made me hungrier until I became low key nose blind to everything. So at least then I'll have some fuel.

I’ve previously been doing challenges on the Rebels board and was thinking of bumping over to Rangers, but Rangers is so big and everyone seems to know each other. Seems stupid to be intimidated by a message board, right?
Then I saw your Ghibli pics and gifs and was like “self, let’s do this!”
So thanks for the Ghibli! Good luck on your challenge!f2a51042f7f3e190e2afed9454efea52.jpg

Don't be afraid of the rangers my young rebel!    I have been here for years, and I know a handful very well, and on occasion spread out to meet and greet folks I've not met along the way.   Whether you follow everyone, or two people.  And whether you chime in daily on a board, or once a year, the rangers are super friendly, and helpful, and awesome!    We would love to have you at our sides!

Also, I LOVE Ghibli movies, so I love this challenge, too :D

Thanks :) All of the managers seem nice so far, though I've only worked with one manager and the General Manager.

I wanted something different this challenge. A little calmer, a lot encouraging. Also that screencap is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. That's Princess Mononoke, right? I've only seen that one once

Definitely glad I took 0 week off. I just slept for 9 hours and I'm still absolutely dead on my feet. I hope I get used to the pace soon: Otherwise I'm gonna have to rethink my workout goal this challenge.

I'm working today and tomorrow, but Sunday is my first day off. And I also have Tuesday off. I'm definitely ready for it >_>

That's good news - a good work environment makes everything better :) And it's from Mononoke! I remember I didn't like it much the first time I saw it, but I checked it out again a couple of years later, and then it became one of my absolute favourites :D

Give yourself time to get adjusted to your new job...! Don't force yourself to workout too hard. You'll get used to the work in a couple of weeks. Until that, do whatever exercise feels good :)

It really does :) And mononoke was great, I watched it with my sister. It's not one of my absolute favorites (That honor goes to Kiki and Howl) but it's excellent.

I'm going to change my goals in general I think. More of a focus on stretching and less on working out. Stretching is going to do me better right now.

Yeah, all of the ones I've worked with have been really nice and really understanding.

Thanks friend :) I direly need the day of rest x_x

~~~~~
So I need to change my goals. I dropped out of the Mini challenge. I've had three shifts at work thus far, and I'm exhausted. I've gotten more than 8 hours of sleep every night since I started work and I'm still just physically exhausted. My whole body is tired. Not achy, just tired. Though my shoulders are starting to ache a little bit.
I think I'm going to change stretching to 6 days a week. And my strength training needs to go. I don't know what I can sub in. Maybe a light 10 minute yoga video that's extra intense stretching. This month needs to be some more relaxing. I can't really cope with more heavy stuff on top of work with how physically demanding it is.
I think that's a wise change. Listen to your body and take care of yourself. If work is physically demanding then you are getting exercise.
True. The stretching will hopefully keep my muscles limber and help the last longer at work
Whelp, today is day one of the new challenge.
I have some good newses. Those include that two web dev positions contacted me. One of which is about an hour and a half away, the other is closer. I don't really want to take the far away one because distance, but on the other hand it would also be kinda cool to work in the place where they are interested in me.
On the subject of harder newses, I think it's really important that I get this out and air it like the dirty laundry it kinda is: I don't like my job.
I know that's a silly thing to be saying, but I've spent my entire time in the workforce with jobs that I like. Because of this, I've been trying so hard to convince others, and thus myself, that I like it. But last night I had to face facts. I really don't like it that much. I'm tired all the time, my muscles have been quietly aching for almost a week now. And last night I faced the truth that I'd been avoiding: I don't want to go into work today. And I'm still trying to avoid the thought because it's not productive and I need to be at least interested in going into work to be able to face going in later. But I'm going to come home tonight after my husband is in bed (thus not getting to see him at all) and I'm going to come home with feet aching so much I can't walk correctly and with a tired body.
I'm having a hard time having the energy to do anything. Even things like applying to web dev jobs or things that bring me joy. My eating is absolutely awful: likely because I'm still kinda depressed like I was when I was unemployed. I'm either eating very little, or eating 90% junk food and a bunch of it at once. I've got to keep an eye on that at least, but it's probably either the exhaustion, the extra movement, or my mood. So I guess what I'm really trying to do is make sure I'm practicing Intuitive Eating as well as possible.
Well, time to get things done. I'm eating a little bit of breakfast, and then I'm going to try to get some stuff taken care of today before work (like studying my work stuff, and also emptying the dishwasher and doing another job application). I think I have tomorrow off as well, so I'll make a point to get a bunch of this stuff done then as well.
regarding "liking" your job...
you were One lucky lady I think to "like" your job (in the past).  most of my job(s) (including the one I have) I more tolerate than like.
and that might be much better then your current employment situation. -- but just sayin' I have been here for nearly 15years strait.
there is very little chance of a promotion (nil) of a transfer to something I Like more. (still unlikely)
it will be Probably a big incredible disaster- if I lose it in the next decade.  so I am looking towards being in a position 30 years or so, without enjoying it.
...
the point is that its not SO bad to have a job you don't like- if you can tolerate it.  I focus on the things I do like and do what is necesary to make the boss happy with my performance.  I try to tell my demons that its better to exceed current performance although there is very little consequence to do so;cuz I know how important it is to keep this job.
I think the focus having a job you enjoy has eclipsed other equally important parts of your career.  stability?  financial solvency?  freedom from debt (especially cc)?  benefits  (stuff like insurance and health coverage)? reasonable working hours?
there are many ways at looking at a job.  that saying; I hope you find one that does more for you than the current one.  realize; its prolly a temporary one and that, however uncomfortable- better prospects are surely out there.
Yeah, me and Mr. Right had this discussion last night. Part of why I went into it here has to do with the fact that I don't think it's healthy to lie to myself. I don't want to keep telling myself that I love it when I don't. I don't hate my waitress job. It can be fun, and it's going to teach me some skills that are absolutely vital for me to have as a person.
I think part of the problem is related to that is that yeah, I've always loved my jobs. I didn't always like the day-to-day, and there were things I didn't like that popped up, but I got to do something I loved. Right now I'm doing something that is so far outside my comfort zone it might as well be on another planet. It's hard. I'm not used to either of those things. I still work hard. I'm lucky now in that my managers are understanding that I've never done anything like this before: they let me leave around 45 mins early because while I wasn't necessarily telling them that I was struggling, they could tell that I was barely able to walk by the end of my shift.
And this is 100% a temporary job. It has no benefits. The stability is fine (they have a lot of turnover that they're trying to improve so they'll do a lot to keep me if I'll stay). I can't say much about what the money is going to be like because I don't really know at this point. I haven't started actually waiting tables yet (training still) and I'm dependent on tips. The working hours are fairly acceptable (not what I'm used to, but I'm able to get enough sleep without losing out on enjoying activities outside of work and I still see Mr. Right, which is as much as I ask for). Advancement? IDK. I don't personally think I'm manager material, and that's the only real direction I can go with this.
But, on the positive side, I still get to do programming. I'm freelancing some on top of what I'm doing, and I'm still looking for something more permanent with health insurance and the like. It's not over, but I think right now it's just really difficult for me to grasp the idea of doing a job you barely like after doing a job you absolutely loved. It was my dream job that I lost, and I think I'm still grieving it a little bit.
I dunno. At the core of it, I think I just needed to tell someone that no, I don't like it. Because again- lying to yourself doesn't seem like a good idea.
