Vixen pulled herself up and over the edge of the cliff, carefully stepping away from the edge before turning to look back at the way she came. Her training on the bouldering walls back home had prepared her for the climb, but it hadn't been easy, and she was thankful to be back on terra firma. The satisfied smile on her face soon fell however when she turned to look at the path ahead. True, she had scaled this cliff, but it fell sharply away again to rocky, dangerous gulley. The edge opposite her was tantalisingly close, but climbing back down and up again would more than quadruple the distance she had to travel. Looking up, she saw some vines hanging from a sturdy tree branch, which all but traversed the gully. Could there be another way across?

First full challenge in several years! Here we go! I went through the guide to setting smart goals, and came up with the following five areas in bold. These are long-term goals (to be achieved over a year). I've broken them down into SMART goals, and I'm setting a few of those for my challenge.

Hang Glide  When I was little I said this was my life ambition. I've decided to actually just do it this year. Because there's no time like the present. Hang glide this year was my 2018 New Year's Resolution.

Research places to do it, and best time of year to go.

Make a spreadsheet with all the places & times & send to partner in crime

Become a Gymnastic Ring Aficionado   I'm on the last level of the bodyweight path in the NF Academy, and I'm ready to take it to the next level. My other half isn't keen on me buying the rings/handstands course, so I'm researching what I can do on my own first.

Schedule BW workouts for the month.

Strength training x3 a week (includes climbing/hoop)   Week 1   Week 2   Week 3   Week 4

Build up a bookmarks folder of ring training advice

Become Proficient at Aerial Hoop   Hoop is my new favourite thing in the world. I love it. I want to do it MORE.

Schedule classes for the month.

Hoop class x1 a week   Week 1  Week 2   Week 3   Week 4

Yoga five times a week  Week 1  Week 2   Week 3   Week 4

Write First Draft of a Story   Another one of the things I always said I would do. I went on an OU creative writing course last year, now to start putting it into practice! Vixen is a character in one of my WIPs, btw.

Schedule in one writing session a week for a month

Write once a week as aboveWeek 1  Week 2  Week 3  Week 4

Find a New Job   My other half is a doctor, and we will be moving for his work in August. I'm trying to put in the groundwork now, so I can find a new job that I like!

All written work for care certificate completed

E-mail technical lead and network/ask about jobs - this is no longer relevant as I'm not going to Glasgow

E-mail Phys Soc contact and ask about research in Liverpool

Whew! I know that seems like a lot, but I don't think it's too bad. The workout stuff is mainly at the level I'm already working at. I just finished the 30 days of yoga challenge, so missing yoga a couple days a week is almost a step back... and I'm head over heels in love with hoop so I'm sure to get to classes (famous last words?). It's more all the admin stuff I'm going to find harder, because ugh, speaking to people. Introverts unite!

Ha here you are, following up!

Oh hang glide,  Britain is quite windy for this, maybe even too much no? For me this is a bit scary, like parachute or jumping with an elastic rope. I did  paragliding once with my cousin's husband when I was 12-13 (one glider with 2 harnesses), it was beautiful and an amazing feeling, but also scary. (I know... I enjoy aerial stuff but I still get the shakes when things get higher up...-_-)

Cool drawing! Are you illustrating your stories? I used to draw little comics, but I've totally lost the habit these days. How much time do you set aside for a writing session (or is it open ended?)

Well, I know absolutely nothing about hang gliding, and I've never been sky diving or anything either! But my old PhD supervisor used to hang glide in the UK, and I've found a place in Derbyshire that does it, so I'm sure it must be possible! I am planning a tandem flight at first, where they take you up with a plane rather than jumping off a cliff. Seems like a good starting point to me. I don't have any problem with heights when climbing/mountaineering... Rather I love looking over the edge. But I don't suppose I'll know how scared I will be until I try it!

I will set aside 2 hours, because that's a good pomodoro block. Long enough to get something done, but not too long that it seems impossible. The drawings are just to help me explore the characters, I'd never be good enough to illustrate!

I have been doing aerial hoop for five weeks. Woop! XD

Here is my training plan for the week. I'm visiting a friend for the weekend, so I've had to cram everything into five days! She does like yoga though, so there's a chance we will get to do some yoga together, and will probably go for a hike too. Want a bit of a rest day on Monday, as I was climbing today and it's so much more exhausting than bouldering when you aren't used to the longer climb!

NEW PLAN

Mon: Swimming, yoga

Tue: Yoga, aerial hoop

Wed: Laughter yoga

Thu: Bodyweight 7A, Yoga

Fri: Auto belay training, climbing

Sat: yoga

Well, things on surged forward on the find a new job front... just not in the way we expected. Husband was targetting Scotland, but he's been offered a job in Liverpool instead, so it turns out we're going there! We're pretty sure this is to do with the political situation in the UK at the moment. Scotland has been protected from changes to the junior doctors' contract by devolution... making it a very popular destination. Oh well.

Thanks @Mu for doing all that legwork about aerial arts in Edinburgh, but it turns out I'm not going there. Sorry. :apologetic:

Kind of a moment where I need to see the opportunity in a really unexpected situation. I will need to shift tactics.

No problem at all. You might still want to check EAAC, if you want to go up for an aerial week-end. Pretty sure they will have hoop.

So re your own job search, you have to do it all over again? Tough

I suppose I do have to start all over again :( But I hadn't really done much for Glasgow. Put some feelers out, that's all. So now, I'm asking around for people who work in Liverpool, who can tell me a bit about the science there. I'm hearing good things!

I stupidly thought today was a rest day (knackered after hoop!) but no, actually today is bodyweight day. I'd best get into my workout gear!

Edit: Changed my mind. Today is a rest day. My shoulders are destroyed after hoop yesterday! Will just need to figure out how to work out at the weekend.

Well, I can't seem to add the strikethroughs while editing on my phone! But I have managed week one of my workouts OK. Had to change plans a few times. I didn't end up working out while on the move, but I accidentally went to my autobelay induction early, and the trainer was so awesome he gave me a little session on improving my technique and we chatted about the peaks. It was nice.

In addition to my planned exercise, I also went for a hike with my friends yesterday. And in addition to my two hour writing session, I researched the science for my story on the train.

Well, some stuff I did differently... but as long as I do my yoga before bed tonight, I will have still hit all my workout goals! The different thing I did this week was a handstands and walkovers workshop, and omg was it hard. However, some new firsts were achieved. My first freestanding headstand, and a flip from a handstand into a bridge (onto quite a high mat haha). It was great fun, and I went with a friend of mine, which was a good plan, as there was a lot of partner work, and I'm very glad I didn't have to do all that touchy-feely stuff with a complete stranger.

No pics this week from hoop, but I did some cool stuff. Played on the high hoop, which was fun. Did my first spin (birdie spin), and also did some deliahs on the top bar, and also an invert spin thing (not sure if it has a name) on the top bar, which was like waaaaahhh, so awesome.

In writing, have been doing lots of research for the novel, coming up with themes and plot points. Have realised that I very much don't have a proper ending worked out, so my goal for next week is to work on at least where I want the character arc to end up. Oh, I also wrote a blog post about going bald.

I have researched into hang gliding. They are taking people up right now, but recommend June for a nice flight. My friend is being a bit 'meh' about it, so I need to figure out if I'm going to wait for her, or just take the plunge and book it for myself.

And finally... I did NO WORK on my care certificate, BUT I did apply for a job in Liverpool, which I feel is a pretty positive step forward.

I also practised a bit on my recorder, and practised hula hoop, and did some walking and stuff. So, a busy week, full of lots of fun.

Mon: Swimming, yoga

Tue: Yoga, aerial hoop

Wed: Yoga, writing

Thu: Yoga

Fri: Yoga

Sat: Yoga, climbing

Sun: Bodyweight yoga

With my nursing job on Thursday and Friday I just find that I can't do anything too hard those days. The hours are long, I spend an hour each way commuting, and the work is exhausting. So I just have to do two strengthy-like days in a row, and hope it's OK. I did it this weekend, and it was totally fine.

Yoga is going good, hoop is going good, went climbing this week which was fun. I just find it impossible to do anything on my nursing days. And I've only done two sections of work for my care certificate. I hate doing it. It's so boring. I'm glad the move is going to take me out of that industry.

I have done some more job finding things though. Had lunch today with a friend who works in medical writing. He and another colleague are going to recommend me for a job interview, which would hopefully lead to a job which I could do remotely, which please please please. Anyway. I'm trying!!

Re-arranging the time I do hoop, because otherwise all my strength workouts are bunched together and it gets intense

Vixen cursed as she tried to snatch at the vines. She'd made good progress when she started, but now everything seemed rather more tricky now she was in the thick of it, and not on the cliff. Through sheer determination, she made it to the other side, but as she stood bent over, hands on knees, gasping, she realised that if she was going to attempt that again, she was going to need to take on board some serious advice.

RIght, I'm awarding myself a level up for this month, even though things didn't go quite as I planned. You can see in my last week I slacked off on the exercise a fair bit. I came down with a cold on Sunday, and I've been off work ever since, so that may be the reason. I'm just trying to rest for this week now. It's driving me nuts though.

LESSONS LEARNED

  1. Exercising on nursing days just isn't going to happen. This job does not fit with my goals or my hobbies, and so once it's time to move, I am going to leave the healthcare sector. My priority is to find a job with a regular eight hour day, which will allow me to exercise before work.
  2. Yoga every day is pretty cool for a month, but hard to sustain long-term. If I am working out on any given day, I will also be stretching. It's much easier to incorporate the yoga into my workout than to do two workout sessions a day.
  3. The day after aerial hoop or climbing I am broken and need a rest day. But I can stack up two bodyweight days or do one before hoop or climbing no problem.
  4. The Healthcare Certificate is a huge amount of work, and I totally underestimated it!!
  5. I have no motivation to spend hours reading up on how to learn rings and handstands. This is the biggest lesson. I thought I could go it alone, but actually, I'm totally clueless on what to do. So I decided to buy the NF courses instead (hubby wasn't pleased). Even with the courses, I feel pretty lost. At least now I have some guidance, and some financial motivation to get going!
  6. Another big lesson... when I'm twatting around hula hooping and practising my handstands it doesn't feel like a workout, it feels like FUN. I really really really love gymnastics. Why oh why did it take me 33 years to work that out?

WINS

  1. Attended a handstand workshop, and did my first ever headstand.
  2. Transformed my new found love for aerial hoop into a weekly practice. Did plenty of new moves!
  3. Bought a hula hoop and learned how to spin it in reverse, turn while spinning, and how to spin it on my hands.
  4. Wrote a blog post that strangers read!
  5. Got offered a job interview.
  6. Planned out my novel!!!

Some really unflattering hoop progress pictures... this straddle thing, and the move of the week called 'baboon in the moon'.

Gymnastics is loveee! It's so crazy to me how it's taken so long to be acceptable for adults to do. A fun workout is a workout you'll keep doing. :D
