Had HIIT this morning. We had a different instructor to the previous couple I've done, and she decided to do a pure cardio session. No weights at all, just tons of jumping and tons and tons of burpees. Eugh. I thought I was going to be sick by the end! It's probably good for me to do some more intense cardio work, but if I thought it was going to be like that every week I think I'd be looking for something else!

No Warrior comments on this yet? Wow...

(We should totally plan a Skype game and get that in before you start DM'ing.  I'm sure we could make it work just once... time zones be damned!    We play with a friend who is in Singapore!!)

Here if you need some extra input.

In other news, I ordered the D&D starter set on Sunday, it arrived on Monday and I started reading the campaign guide on Tuesday. So looks like I might end up DMing a game for a couple of friends soon. I'm very excited at the thought, if a bit scared!

Or if you need an extra one-off player in the first week of May ;)

If you're up for it we might be able to make something work. Probably via Skype though. I'll let you know.

Oh man. I need to start lifting more regularly! You are making swift ground on me!

I'm pretty sure 5.5 miles still counts as a workout! That many intervals in the morning sounds horrendous, so well done for getting out and doing them.

On 14/02/2018 at 12:37 PM, Jarric said:

Thanks! The thing is though, when the intervals are half a mile long they're not actually that fast! I think most of them were about 9'15" pace, with a couple of slower ones when I went off road. I can definitely do half a mile faster, but I can't do it 8 times in a row!

They sound like cruise intervals which are a kind of tempo (or threshold) workout. I'm going to say though that 9'15'' sounds like it would be a little too slow for you to be a tempo workout.

How are you determining the pace to hit these intervals at?

Well I'm trying :P . I'm still only lifting twice per week though, so I doubt I'll catch up that fast.

For the paces I'm just following a pre-made Runkeeper plan very loosely. The actual plan called for 9'45"-9'55" pace on those intervals, but I was finding 9'15" pretty comfortable on-road so I stuck with it. That said, I find it really hard to determine an appropriate pace because as soon as I hit muddy hills or boggy fields my pace falls off a cliff. Any ideas how to determine paces for on and off road? Or should I perhaps just focus on perceived effort?

Tonight I will likely actually spend some of my budget, as it's a night out drinking with my team at work. Should be a really good laugh though. Saturday is Parkrun in the morning followed by getting my life together, and Sunday is bouldering in the morning and long run in the afternoon, as well as meal prep for the week.

That makes sense. Are you still doing the sub-2:30 plan? I wish I could help you but I do all of my speed work on pavement just to eliminate those variables and I just let my off road pace be what it is (slow). You could use HR zones to figure out your effort but you do need to actually test your max heart rate for that to be useful (at least in my experience). Otherwise perceived effort might work. Threshold runs should be comfortably hard, or something around your 10k pace (for peeps of our general speed. It should be a pace you can hold for about an hour). Of course that pace on mud is going to be vastly different than on pavement.

It's a sub 2:15 plan now. That's good to know, thanks. I might mess around with heart rate at some point, but in the meantime that's kind of what I've been doing with effort so I think I'm on the right track (ish). It probably would be easier to work out on road, but I prefer getting muddy!

Last night was, as predicted, a fairly heavy one that used up almost all of my budget for the week. Had a really fun night though drinking with work people, so I'm happy with it. I did fail my preparation goal though, although luckily on a Saturday I don't really have a problem getting up and ready to run.

This morning I decided to take it easy at Parkrun given the heavy night last night and that I had less than 5 hours of sleep. Still got round in 28:35, which I think is pretty good considering.

This afternoon I went round my dad's to sort some stuff on my car - new front brake pads and discs, tightened the handbrake, basically it now stops and it now stays stopped!

And tonight I plan to engage in some intense relaxation in front of the TV.

Today's been a good day. Climbed in the morning, did most of a new circuit of climbs they've put up and had really good fun with them. I may need to work on my finger strength though. Something to think about.

This afternoon was my long run - was on for 10 miles today. Annoyingly my GPS stopped working, twice, but I looked up the route when I got home and handily enough it was spot on 10 miles.

This evening I made cottage pie, which was lovely and had enough left over for lunch tomorrow. And now I'm watching Shield of Tomorrow and contemplating going to bed.

It's better than the usual hand grips as it gets you used to working each finger independently.

(Seriously though, does that make my superpower making people able to run with a hangover, or giving people a hangover when they have no choice but to run?)

My finger strength is pretty much back to how it was before I broke my finger, so it must be doing something right. I haven't climbed enough in the last few weeks to really test properly.

The other option is to use the hangboards at the climbing gym. I don't know about you, but I find it too much to try and use these after climbing for a few hours and I don't have the time to go to the climbing place just to do hangboard training. I'd love to be able to put up a hangboard at home, but I don't think my walls are strong enough!

Stats for Week 1

Prepare for Battle: 5/28 (71.4% so far)

Do Battle!: 7/28 (100% so far) (+1 bonus session)

Star Fleet Rations: 5/20 (100% so far)

Gold Pressed Latinum: 1/4 (£44.30 of £50 budget spent)

Ten Forward: 7/28 (100% so far)

So all going very well in fact. The prepare for battle is interesting - it's not so necessary for the weekends as I'm getting up later and don't have the time pressure of exercising before work, which is how I ended up forgetting it twice. I do want to stick with it however - it's more about the intent of saying "I will exercise tomorrow morning" than anything.

The thing I'm most surprised about is hitting my budget for the week. Given that I spent about 80% of it on a single round of drinks on Friday I thought I would blow it that night, let alone over the weekend. Goes to show what is possible if I try.

======

On to this morning - Squat day!

Joint Mobility

OHP: 20kg x 2 x 5, 30kg: 5, 3, 35kg (~77#) x 5**

Squats: 20kg x 2 x 5, 40kg x 5, 45kg x 3, 55kg x 1, 60kg (~132#) x 12*

Leg press: 50kg (~110#) x 4 x 12

Leg curl: 32kg x 4 x 12

Stretched

*Increase squat working max to 80kg

**Increase OHP working max to 38.85kg

***Increase leg press to 60kg next time

======

Between yesterday's climbing and running and that^ today my left hip is not very happy with me! I'm sure it'll come around though. I also feeling a bit rough today in general; not sure if that's related. I hope it clears up anyway as I have snooker matches today, tomorrow and Wednesday, a free evening to watch Crit Role on Thursday and then I'm at a beer festival on Friday.

Good to know. I have the same problem with hang boards. I was considering getting rock grips (picture in spoiler) and hanging them from my pullup bar, which might have a similar effect. Still need to decide which is the best way to put the money on grip strength!

I looked at those too but I think they might be a bit too advanced for me. If you hang them from a pull up bar, that means they are swinging freely. Surely that makes them harder to hold onto with your fingers? I'm sure I'd just slip off them and land on my arse!

(Seriously though, does that make my superpower making people able to run with a hangover, or giving people a hangover when they have no choice but to run?)

Nah, I'll take responsibility for my own hangover. (if only because the exact details of that night are vague at best ;) ) I'm going to try and save my best drinking for until after we've run 20 miles at RRDW!

Wow, you're nailing it Jarric!  Well, freaking, done my friend.  How exciting!!    So when you watch Crit Role live--- (do you ever?) does it come on at like 4am your time Friday morning?  Or do I have it reversed?       I am anxious to see the episode that gets put on youtube tonight!   Can't wait!

Super bravo on the budget!  I've been slacking on mine... I don't think I am going over on it much, I am just not actually tracking it, which totally needs to stop.     What method are you using to keep track of stuff?
