hi friends. I've been feeling kind of lost, and not very assassiny for the last month+. I think I have a stress-hangover? after the last year with my dad's illness and the hard work I'm doing at my day job, and then taking over instructing tkd.... it's been kind of a lot.

 

so, I did a yoga challenge in january, and I've been going to tkd, and that's about it.

 

but I miss you, and I miss moving my body! the problem is -- nothing seems awesome. running doesn't sound awesome (I know, I know, you told me so, multiple assassins!), I am not interested in coming up with my own programming w body weight stuff, and I talked to the dojo owner about heavy weights and the timing isn't right for me to be able to come in and do them (he's out on my best days). 

 

but wednesday I 20-SOCed and went to a local gym advertising as functional fitness and talked to the guy, and today I went at 5AM and had a trial class, and signed up. 

 

so this challenge my goal is to go to classes at least 3x a week. that's it! I'm still teaching tkd. We still have dojo sat. I just need someone else to tell me what to do for a while. 

 

also YO I am so late.

Are the classes going to be always at 5am or you get to choose another hour?

There's several classes firing the day, but the 5am is the only one I can really commit to. I need to leave for work at 7am to get there by start time of 8. We go until 5pm but I don't get a dedicated lunch hour (too busy usually, and trying to work with people in multiple time zones). It takes 45 min/1 hr to get home and I have tkd 2x a week in the evenings from 630-730... with a 9pm bedtime there's not much room to squeeze anything in!

I'd much prefer a 530am class but this will work! I hope.... I may be a giant zombie after a couple of weeks and change my mind.

this weekend was great. dojo sat. was FREAKING INTENSE. I may have gotten popped in the face and my jaw started to get really sore by sunday morning, so I'm trying to get an appt with my chiropractor.my husband was like: "I think it's hilarious how something hurts and you're like, oh yeah, maybe I got punched in the face and that's why." he's really sweet and honestly I think he believes I'm a superhero and while a tiny bit embarrassed by that I'm also kind of ok with it. 

 

after dojo sat we drove into Flushing Queens and met my BGG and her beau at a chinese restaurant that they often go to with his family, and ate lots of chinese food. I'd been having a craving for a big family style / lazy susan in the middle of the table / lots of dishes that I can't get at my local storefront chinese food restaurant style meal. We brought Fourteen, who hadn't ever had that kind of sit-down chinese food experience either (where we live it's mostly take-out chinese food). I'm trying to broaden his horizons. ALSO I didn't know that he knew how to eat with chopsticks!!! he'd been refusing to use them at our house for years, I just assumed that he couldn't! it's just not FAST enough for him! 

 

we also bought some delicious buns at a bakery before leaving flushing.

 

Sunday was a long slow rainy day. I baked bread, so got up early and got the sourdough going - I'm getting MUCH better at the timing. it takes all freakin' day long, though. helped fourteen study history. read a book. did some laundry. ate a bunch of leftovers. 

 

so this weekend was all about food, pretty much.

 

Today I was up at 430 and at the gym by 5AM (JUST BARELY). I think this guy follows the cross-fit WODs, but am not sure. we did a warm-up with rowing, and then dumbbell standing rows and then presses (10 lbs), and he taught me how to do snatches, which I have never ever done before and had a really hard time mentally talking my body through it. after that was 7 minutes of dumbbell power snatches (I think?). I felt really limited by my hamstrings, which was so frustrating. they were really stiff, and it's hard for me to push my butt back when I squat, and then I noticed that they're actually pretty weak, I think I've been cheating in all things with my quads. that was a lot of things to observe about myself while trying to learn a new movement at the same time. but, it's 5AM so there's not a lot of room for overthinking things, that's a plus.

 

also my legs were pretty shot and it was wobbly walking down the stairs after my post-workout shower.

 

I'm HUNGRY, I forgot how ravenous I get after starting a new exercise program! so I'm tracking food again -- I haven't, for weeks -- but will being really kind to myself with restriction this week and refine my diet a little more next week.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF ON THIS FOR A LOT OF REASONS. New workout program will take some adjustments to get used to on the dietary front, especially if it is eating into what was formerly sleep time.

DEFINATELY GOING TO DIE AFTER TODAYS WORKOUT. SEND TOAST.

(I left my toast downstairs and walking down to get it seems insurmountable.)

(Totally possible tomorrow will be a gentle stretching and relaxation WOD, right? Like, AMRAP naps? I'm going to own it tomorrow.)

I went to class again this morning. I WAS SOOOOO STIFF.

 

the coach asked me how I was feeling and I was like: "I"m really sore. Actually, I died. after class. I am dead now. I have no corporeal form. I can't touch anything, I'm just here to hang out with you. I can't pick up heavy things." and he and his gf laughed and laughed like I was a little bit weird. (they're not wrong.)

 

class today was good but not as terrible. we did an AMRAP for 14 minutes of 25 sit-ups, 15 box dips, and 25 kettle bell swings. so, today I learned how to do ketlle bell swings! I'm learning so much, you guys.

 

aaaaannnnnnnd I didn't get too much stiffer, so there's that.

 

work is hectic and tough. I realized my secret super power is actually being incredibly genuinely earnest. like, so earnest and sincere that people are caught by surprise and feel a little awkward about it, but there's no recourse, because you just have to be kind to a very sincere person!

 

 

so far I've been doing great on the food thing. yesterday after dying I had a protein shake and a piece of buttery buttery toast for breakfast. I baked sourdough bread last weekend so I'm a having big PBJs for lunch, and last night avocado toast on sourdough. man that was good. today was yogurt with jam in it and some buttery toast for breakfast. I'm having a piece of fruit for afternoon snack and getting crazy hungry at around dinner time.

 

oh and also I went to the chiropractor and she laughed so hard at me when I told her that I got popped in the face at tkd on sat. and I thought my jaw was out of alignment. and then she was like.... wait, this side is pushed in and the opposite side is pushed out and are you sure you aren't having problems eating?!  ummmmmm. nah, I just needed a hot pad and some aleve. no problem.

 

tomorrow is hectic thursday but I'm going to go to class, then rush home and shower, then rush to a colleagues house and give him a ride to work, and then go to my construction site, and take a bunch of calls, and then go to the office and make some science, and then rush home to teach tkd. PHEW.

 

I'm worried about friday b/c I want to go to class but I also have a work physical scheduled for 10AM and that's SO FREAKING LATE and I don't know if I will survive without eating (they do fasting blood work).

I was thinking today about how I'm not 100% sure how much food I should be eating! I have been flirting with calorie tracking for so long. I think I need to eat more. I'm going to have 2 lunches today.

Thursday went well. Class was good and I learned how to do front squats w barbell. This guy spends a lot of time on technique, which I am reassured by. I did all the things and had 2 lunches (which isn't a lot of food, really, it's like, 800 calories) and taught the class and got home and ate a big dinner w avocado toast and shredded pork to try and manage my blood sugar until work physical / fasting blood work at 10am today.

We are having weather today so my am class is cancelled. Honestly I needed a rest day. I'm so stiff and sore. I did a bunch of extra stretching before tkd and a tricky form sloooooowly to warm up before class yesterday and it helped, but I need to basically stay still and apply avocado toast directly to my muscles I think!

weather is frightful, but I came in to work and went to my physical. Highlights: the EKG person said that I am the most calm person she's performed a test on, and the RN confirmed I was a runner because "your pulse is 47." UMMMM. I was like: is that too low? but she said no, not unless I get dizzy sometimes. Ok then! 

 

I couldn't eat until I got back to the office (at 1120) so I had my breakfast (avocado toast -- I wasn't kidding) and lunch (pork, rice, and arugula) right after each other. delicious.

 

Tonight I'm going into NYC to meet my husband and some college classmates for dinner. one of our classmates passed away last week, and he was such a private person - we didn't even know he was sick. it emphasized that we need to be more deliberate about seeing each other. HOWEVER, it's terrible weather outside, the snow is starting to stick on the roads, and I haven't gotten anything done today. I'll be working this weekend for sure (because I need to leave soon to beat wintery weather rush hour traffic).

Had a late night out, woke up tired, went to the dojo and .... no one was there. I went grocery shopping instead but it's also lady time and I had a bad case of the blue meanies* and felt so sorry for myself BC no one let me know class was cancelled. Also I hate going grocery shopping when I feel like it's unplanned. I got over everything in time for the 1130 class that I teach, but it was a rough morning.

* this is a thing that happened as I got older. I have, like, 4 hours of hormonally-caused pitifulness. Not a fan, but fully recognize that I have an easy time of things overall.

:D The "maybe I got punched there" thing puzzles people but it is what it is. Sometimes I find a bruise in my arm or an itchy wound in my feet and I don't recall being hit there. I obviously was, at some point, but...

this was a really necessary and really great restful weekend.

1. I got a real rest day on friday

2. I didn't have to shovel snow because miraculously, even though there were 12 inches to the west of us and 12 inches to the east of us, we had nothing to speak of.

3. Even though my feelings got hurt that no one remembered me to tell me class was cancelled on sat., it was really really good to not push myself that day.

4. I read a bunch of books and took a bath on sat. afternoon, and we made a beef stew in the instapot that came out amazing (pro tip carrots are sweet enough we were 110% correct to ignore the recipe and NOT add sugar to the recipe. [[we joke b/c my husband's dad's family are all from ohio and THEY all love super sweet things that this is a very ohio recipe.]])

5. I got almost all of my work done that needed to be done sunday afternoon, and also bonus: made coconut cookies and black beans in the instant pot, and then this quinoa bean enchilada casserole that I love for dinner.

 

Today I got up for exercise party and my body felt INCREDIBLE but then the warmup had all these hip lateral movements (OUCH) and also burpees, which I'm ok with, but there was a jump between burpees, and I am NOT ok with that jumping bit. it's cool though. I did it.

it turns out that this is NOT a common experience, zenLara. you and I are superheros. :D

OH GOOD. I am glad you guys didn't get aggressively Weathered (TM) from the freak storm and that you found  your rest. Also alllll the good cooking! I love it.

Not gonna lie - got super excited and then confused that you could make coconut cookies in the instant pot. 

 

Reading comprehension is hard...

 

Glad you got an easy day in! Sometimes it is hard to remember how important those are until a sneaky one shows up and proves us wrong.
