Rangers Gonna Take the OWLs Mini Challenge

Alright students - you've been preparing for the Ordinary Wizarding Levels over your five years at Hogwarts, and  ready or not it's finally time to test your knowledge and magical abilities!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-32706-1386194477-24

As you know, the OWLs are the most important test of your life thus far.  They will determine what subjects you will study in the future as well what type of career you may have once your education here is complete.

You will each be tested on the four subjects you have been taking classes in this year.  Due to every students unique set of electives, we have been able to condense the schedule so two simultaneous exams will be ran each week without anyone needing a Time Turner.  Please remember that anti-cheating spells have been applied to all exam papers and any attempt at cheating will not be tolerated.

The exam schedule will be as follows:

Week One: Herbology and History of Magic

Week Two: Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration

Week Three: Defense Against the Dark Arts and Divination

Week Four: Charms and Ancient Runes

Please ensure you report to the correct room for the subject you have been studying.  We have arranged it such that none of you are taking both of the exam subjects being tested in any given week.  The contents of each test will not be revealed until the start of the exam period for that test (ie the start of each week).

You have some time to finalize your preparations for these exams - use this time wisely as your first subject will be begin testing on March 19th!

Translation:

Each week there will be two mini challenge goals to choose from - one will be an active goal and one will be a recovery goal.  Based on where ever you are in your challenge and/or life you can pick which ever one works for you that week. Post which goal you will be going after, how you will be achieving it, and your results in this thread!

Remember participation is purely optional - and don't forget to have fun!

Week One OWLsHerbology and History of Magic

Welcome students to your first week of the OWLs!  For those of you who have chosen to study Herbology please make your way to the Greenhouse for your exam, and those of you studying History of Magic will be tested in the Great Hall.  Good luck!

Herbology Exam

For the herbology exam, you will be working with mandrakes - each work area has 15 mandrakes that require repotting each of which you need to successfully relocate to pass your exam.  All equipment you require can be found in the supply room, you have 3 hours.  Good luck!

BlankGraveAngwantibo-size_restricted.gif

Pulling mandrakes out of their pots is hard work - in order to pass this exam you must add a pulling exercise to one or more of your workouts this week (e.g. pull ups, dead lifts or dead lift variations, rows).

History of Magic Exam

This exam will focus on the goblin rebellions and the final exam question will require a 5 foot parchment essay at a minimum in order to be accepted.

adbe0e4b35f2cb5d9bc426eb815cc23be1b7a403

The History of Magic is a fascinating subject for those who choose to study it, however it requires long hours slumped over desks and parchment.  After hours pouring over 5+ feet of parchment for the OWLs, you will surely be stiff.  In order to recover you'll have to stretch!  For the recovery mini this week, add a recovery based stretch routine into your week.  This can be yoga, ROMWOD, a stretch routine from Fitness Blender or anything else you feel is appropriate and works for you.

---------------------------------------

Once you have chosen your subject for the week, post your plans here and keep us updated on when you accomplish it! In all cases these are in addition to what you already have planned for your challenge and I encourage you to use the opportunity to try out something new. Don't be shy about questions either.  Have fun!

Week Two OWLs: Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration

Welcome students to your second week of exams in the OWLs! I hope all of you did well last week, but remember each subject is graded independently so don't hesitate to try your best even if you did not do as well as you had hoped last week.  Today we begin your Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration exams.  Students of Care of Magical Creatures please proceed to Hagrid's garden, and the Transfiguration exam will take place in the Great Hall.  Good luck!

Care of Magical Creatures Exam

For the Care of Magical Creatures Exam, you will be working with blast-ended skrewts.  If you plan to have a job in the Department of the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, you will often encounter dangerous and sometimes illegally bred beasts.  These blast ended skrewts are a good example of what you might meet in the field, and to proceed with your training towards such a career you must demonstrate excellence in the OWLs here by capturing five of the skrewts with minimal harm to yourself.  You have two hours.  Note that we have Madam Pomfrey on location in case of any grievous injuries.

TriwizardMaze_PM_B4C31M1_SkrewtInTriwiza

Blast-ended skrewts are dangerous creatures capable of shooting fire far distances to prevent capture.  Doge and roll around their manticore pincers and fire crab fire blasts in order to capture them and incorporate some agility work into your workouts this week!

Transfiguration Exam

Today you will be tested on one of the tougher transfiguration spells you have learned in your time here at Hogwarts, Vera Verto.  This spell, as you know, transforms an animal into a water goblet.  You will be graded on the completeness and accuracy of your transfiguration, with extra points granted for creativity and style of your goblet.  Each of you has a different animal in front of you, any remnants of fur, feathers, tails, eyes, etc in your goblet will result in a loss of points.  You have a half hour to accomplish this transfiguration spell successfully, and you are allowed ONE replacement animal if you cannot fix a transfiguration you have incorrectly transformed.  Good luck!

Water is an often under utilized aspect of recovery, you may surprised at how much less stiff you are after a workout when you hydrate properly!  This week for your recovery mini, be a better hydrater!  Will you try to drink a full glass before leaving in the morning?  Will you bring an extra bottle of water to work, or drink a glass of water before every meal?  Share your approach for increasing your water intake here, and post your success (or troubles) here.

---------------------------------------

Once you have chosen your subject for the week, post your plans here and keep us updated on when you accomplish it! In all cases these are in addition to what you already have planned for your challenge and I encourage you to use the opportunity to try out something new. Don't be shy about questions either.  Have fun!

Week Three OWLs: Defense Against the Dark Arts and Divination

It appears all of our students are performing quite well this year, great job!  You're halfway there., please continue to push forward with excellence as your future careers depend on your results.  The next two exams will be Defense Against the Dark Arts and Divination.  Defense Against the Dark Arts students, please proceed to the Great Hall.  Those taking the Divination exam will need to find their way to the North Tower.  Good luck!

Defense Against the Dark Arts Exam

For this exam, you will be tested on the disarming spell Expelliarmus.  As you are hopefully aware, this spell can be incredibly useful as without their wand, your opponent is effectively useless.  This can give you time to retreat, as at your age you should not be engaging in dueling anyway. You will first be tested on your proficiency at this spell and will need to execute it correctly.  Once you have done this you must demonstrate your ability to block this spell, and your proctor will attempt to perform the spell on you and you must block the spell in order to pass.  You will have a half hour for each task.

tumblr_nsfaooAocV1sfmnojo1_500.gif

Expelliarmus blasts your opponents wand away from them - in order to successfully push away both their want and their incoming spells, you must incorporate an extra push exercise into one or more of your workouts this week.

Divination Exam

Hello students.  Today you will be tested on tessomancy.  You must read your proctor's tea leaves and tell them their fate.  Once you are done you will be graded on the accuracy of the figures you have identified in the leaves.  You may take as long as you wish for this exam, just be sure to finish before your next exam begins.

giphy.gif

Tessomancy requires deep concentration - this week for your recovery mini you must incorporate meditation into your routine at least once. This can be as short as five or ten minutes, and can be whatever meditation means to you as everyone requires different levels of guidance and focus. Personally I really enjoy Headspace and Calm.com, and YouTube has many guided meditations as well if you are looking for some help.  If you already meditate regularly, use this opportunity to try out a different type of meditation - for example I usually use techniques that focus on my breathing but I recently tried out some guided imagery meditations and thought it was a really nice change that I now incorporate on occasion - this is a nice one where you are on a beach for example.

---------------------------------------

Once you have chosen your subject for the week, post your plans here and keep us updated on when you accomplish it! In all cases these are in addition to what you already have planned for your challenge and I encourage you to use the opportunity to try out something new. Don't be shy about questions either.  Have fun!

Week Four OWLs: Charms and Ancient Runes

Great job students, you are so close to the end! Unfortunately this last week involves the two toughest subjects to be tested thus far, so don't become lackadaisical quite yet.  Your Charms exam will be held in the Quiddich field, and Ancient Runes will be in the Great Hall.  Stay focused, don't give up, and you are sure to succeed.

Charms Exam

Students, if you look all the way across the field at the end the lanes painted in front of each of you, you will see a quaffle. Your task is to use the Accio charm to summon it across the field, past the line immediately in front of you. It is not required that you catch the quaffle as your athletic skill is not what is being graded, however demonstrating that you have utilized the spell with enough delicacy that you would be able to catch the ball if you had the proper coordination is required for a grade of Outstanding.  You have thirty minutes to complete this task.

HandyConcernedIcterinewarbler-max-1mb.gi

Go the distance and get that quaffle across the field! This week for your active mini, incorporate a distance-based workout into your routine.  This can be anything from rucking, to the erg, or swimming, hiking, skipping, running, or even some animal crawling work (like frog jumps, bear walks, crab walks, etc).

The Study of Ancient Runes Exam

The study of ancient runes is a difficult subject that most choose to pass up.  Many think it is just a simple exercise in translation to be a good Runologist, however you all (hopefully) know this is not true.  The discipline involved in deciphering the original texts of ancient spells and lore requires finesse and focus.  Today's exam will not only require you to translate text from Ancient Runes into English, but will also include some words and phrases you have not yet been taught and would not be found in any of your texts - just like a Runologist in the field you will have to use context and your knowledge of the rune alphabet to suggest a translation.  You will also need to identify the time period and location the text originated in.  Good luck!

original.gif

Just like Runology, listening to our body's messages is not always a simple translation.  Our bodies are weird, and sometimes the cues it gives are hard to read.   They require regular care and maintenance that sometimes requires attention to detail to figure out the problem. This week for your recovery mini you need to incorporate soft tissue release into your routine.  This can be done with foam rolling, using a lacrosse ball on trigger points, active release therapy, or you can get fancy and go get a real massage (#treatyoself).  If you've never done this before and aren't sure where to begin, here are some beginner foam rolling techniques.  Also if you don't have access to any of these tools you can always do self massage, which is also really effective.  Keep in mind it can sometimes be a bit painful so don't over do it! Also pay attention while you do this, as sometimes you'll find knots in areas you didn't even know about which may be affecting other parts of your body (for example I recently found a knot forming in my quad that I realized had been giving me hip pain).

I personally am a huge fan of myofascial release (I am currently sitting on a lacrosse ball at my desk while writing this) and don't think I'd be able to recover as quickly as I do without it, so if you have any questions please reach out!

YES! I have a Ravenclaw cardigan from Torrid that I wear every Tuesday. It's so subtle and nice-looking that only real Harry Potter fans will actually pick up on it ;D

I'm googling it now and I can't find anything.  Where did this tradition come from?

I've got a Ravenclaw colors hat and scarf that I knitted myself.  They're ugly but I'm very proud of them anyway.  :-)
