Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who replied! This has been fascinating to hear all of this.  I had never seen this game until coming to China and had no idea it was such a popular game with such a long history

Throwing in my two cents: my husband and I played that game as kids and had different names for it since I'm from India and he's from Pakistan. He called it Ludo like the Brits, we called it Chowka Bara.

That is very interesting, given that the game was based on Pachisi which originated in India.  What does Chowka Bara translate as?

Nice! How did the home cooked meals turn out?

Oh, yes, that reminds me.  I forgot to post pictures of my food.

I have no idea what this dish is actually called, but I call it Tuna Huevos Rancheros.  It is grilled tuna and scrambled eggs, with cheese and salsa

J3QOPHX.jpg

This is my interpretation of the mint fish @Tanktimus the Encourager described in his thread a while back.  It sounded really good so I gave it a go.  It was, in fact, quite tasty, but I probably should have used a little less mint

KBD9zlv.jpg

This is grilled rosemary chicken and coleslaw based on another recipe in Tank's thread.  I know traditional coleslaw is made with green cabbage, but I was in the mood for purple cabbage so I went with that instead

p0q5r3E.jpg

These are supposed to be apple cinnamon caveman cookies that I got from this recipe at Nom Nom Paleo.  They didn't turn out like the pictures in the recipe, and I didn't think they were nearly as tasty as advertised, but they weren't terrible either.

I also made a pot of chili, but I didn't take a picture of that because it wasn't very photogenic.  I also made another batch of granola today, but didn't take a picture of that either.

Not sure... I know there's a variation of Parchisi called Chaupar in India, which is what Chowka Bara is more closely based on.

But why have purple cole slaw when you can have purple sauerkraut?

Seriously tho, I've made it before, and the purple pigment, anthocyanin, is also a good pH indicator. It's turns the water/juice in the sauerkraut blue in the beginning. Then, as it turns sour from the lactic acid it goes back to purple. So you always know when it's done (of course you could taste it, but that involves less science).

Addit: I think my job this challenge is to troll all instances of cole slaw talk with sauerkraut talk.

Thanks, this whole thing has been very interesting.  I would never have imagined that one game would have so many names across the world.

I think about half of the food I make is inspired by your thread.  Even when I go in there not hungry I come out hungry :D Luckily you have pretty detailed descriptions so I can attempt to approximate :)

There is a time and a place for coleslaw and a time and a place for sauerkraut.  For those that aren't clear, the time and place for coleslaw is always and everywhere, while for sauerkraut it is nowhere and never :P

Ghostlet was homesick yesterday, because he woke up with an upset stomach, together with vomiting and diarrhea.  Gross but fascinating details (to me anyway) in the spoiler

Spoiler

It was really weird because he threw up his lunch from the day before, which was barely digested at all.  However, his dinner (which obviously was consumed later) was already gone, though.  My guess is that his lunch (which we had ordered from Yoshinoya) was made with very susbstandard ingredients, and I would not be surprised if they are actually fake (i.e. made with non-food/synthetic substances).  I have heard of fake vegetables before but had never encountered them before (that I knew about), but I have a feeling that these were.  Needless to say, we will not be ordering from Yoshinoya again :( Such is life in China

Mi Vieja has been talking recently that she wants to get active again, because she has gained a bit of weight over the last couple of years.  For most of our relationship she was always in better shape than me, and it has only been in the last year or so, that I have been able to reverse that dynamic.  She has been talking about getting back in shape for months, but given her schedule I didn't expect she would actually put her words into action.  I was pleasantly surprised that as of this week, she has committed to a food and exercise plan.  I am super excited because I think it will be good for her, but also because, although she is quite good looking anyway, when she is in shape she is the hottest of the hottest :)

Update time:

Fitness - Yesterday was supposed to be my run day, but because I was staying home with the sick Ghostlet I switched it up and did my ATW workout instead.  I then tried to do some mobility stuff afterwards but was too burned out from the workout so I gave up.

Fartleks - Run done this morning.  I went a little further than usual because extra miles count towards both the Assassin mini and the House Cup (Go Slytherin!), but my TomTom took forever to find the GPS so I missed out on almost 1km.  I will try to calculate manually how far that part was exactly.

Focus - I didn't go to work so I miss out on those points

Fuel - I had Chili for dinner (added some cheese and a hotdog because CHEESE and HOTDOGS!) and also had a few caveman cookies

Fruit - I only had one piece of fruit, so I gave myself half a point

Flexibility - Did my stretching and have been quite pleased with the progress on the front fold.  I can tell I have been making some good progress there and at this rate it won't be long before I will be reaching my toes.  Side split has regressed a bit though, because my adductor is still tender and sore, so I have been going easy on stretching it.

Files - Everything recorded in MFP

Fingering - I spent some more time on the Ukulele trying to relearn how to play Katyusha (the Soviet folk song)

Even though I was home all day with Ghostlet, we didn't get any fun in.  He spent all morning sleeping and then in the afternoon he was feeling better we got the homework from his teacher so he had to do that.

Points stand at 22.95, which puts me at 22% for the week and 23% of the challenge total

Kimchi is pretty good but I am pretty picky about what I like.  Most of the stuff I come across is pretty so-so, but the good stuff, when I can find it, is AMAZING!

As a lover of cabbage AND vinegary things AND Korean food, I have to admit… kimchi doesn’t do it for me. Things that taste fermented really turn off my taste buds. (See: beer, kombucha, etc.)

I hear you an things that taste fermented, but if you get some of the good stuff you don't have the fermented taste, just snappy, spicy deliciousness

This is likely my problem, I’ve only ever had kimchi at a couple takeout places and restaurants. Not sure where to score the good stuff…

Unfortunately the only advice I have is to ask a Korean where they think has really good kimchi. Even in the Korean parts of town here it can be really hit or miss, and the places I have found that were excellent were all referrals.

Haha, not really, I think they taste pretty different still! But fermentation is grand. Plus, when your kimchi is more ripe, you can taste it a lot better when you use it for cooking stews and kimchi pancakes and the like. :)
