karinajean is cruisin' to her birthday

I'm still trying to get my feet back underneath me and don't want to be overly ambitious this challenge. here's the deal:

SPRING IS COMING. (she says as she sits watching the snow fall).

MY BIRTHDAY IS COMING! it's April 15. YAY.

MY 4 YEAR NERDIVERSARY IS COMING! that day is April 14th.

so, what am I going to do about it?

* think about what my yard plan will be for the year. THIS IS A TRICK QUESTION. I have never succeeded at yarn planning or any kind of large scale yard work / maintenance program. we'll see what happens.

* keep going to the gym classes. Last year  challenge I signed up for the non-crossfit crossfit gym down the road, and I've been doing classes pretty regular. I want to go on average 4x a week.

* keep tracking food and thinking about what I'm eating. I don't want to worry about cutting or whatever. I do want to worry about eating good for me, generally whole foods, without a boatload of beers.

figure out how to fit in running. there's a 10K in late May that I'd like to do, kinda. THAT SAID, if I'm doing exercise party in the mornings, I'll have to run at other times. figure that out. I haven't run in.... months. let's just say that.

other standard stuff applies: I'm still doing tkd 3x a week (teaching 2x, helping out 1x, and then attending / practicing on dojo saturday as often as that instructor can make it).

ok! let's do this, zero week!

so zero week is going good.

* exercise party yesterday. I learned how to bench press!

* exercise party today. I learned how to deadlift!

there were other things in there too.

but, I'm flippin exhausted right now.

party DST, partly just being so tired because I wake up at 430 AM.

today I'm working at home today because it's snowing, and the roads were a little weird (but probably ok), and I'm so tired.

I'm planning to eat everything in the house.

but, to better facilitate my understanding of FOOD, I did bake 2 loaves of sourdough bread last night (I got them all set on sunday, and did a fridge retard for 24 hours so I could cook them last night), and weighted them both this morning so I could calculate a calories / gram of bread and understand a little better how much I'm eating. I was WAY OFF, I think, probably only considering 50% of the bread calories I had been eating.

so far I've had fried eggs, arugula, and some bread with the leftover drippings / butter / garlic from a roasted 40 cloves of garlic chicken. wow, that was delicious.

I'm about to go fetch some avocado toast.

#bestlife

today in exercise party news, there were some hangs from bar and knees to chest that resulted in a really ugly big rip on my hand.

y'all everything is so new to me. what do I do for my calluses? file and moisturize? is a little callus ok? how do I know when it's going to be too much? can I just use a nail file, or do I have to buy one of those fancy pedicure foot cheese graters? Is the key just constant maintenance?

also, regarding the knees to chest. exercise party has taught me that my abs are actually really super competent. I can do all the abs things with no problems. the things I can't do are the grippy things and I feel pretty behind on upper body strength. also, in the interests of full disclosure, I will always cheat my squat somehow. I'm working on it. sometimes I literally need to talk to my hamstrings and wake them up so they move in the correct direction.

Filing and moisturizing is good! Having some callus is also good! You’ll kinda feel when it gets too big because it’ll bunch up when you hang.

YaY! you're official now! When I got my first rip on bars at my gymnastics gym, all of the "pro" gymnasts cheered for me LOL. It's apparently a rite of passage.

a little callus is ok but while you have a rip or if you become prone to them (some people just are) you could make a little tape loop that slides over your finger and covers the part of your hand you normally rip (for a lot of people it's their middle finger, for me it happens to be under my ring finger) and you make it tape-inwards so it's not sticky anymore, and then every time you go to do bars, slip it over your finger and tape the bottom end down to your wrist. Then after class you can throw away that tape and keep the little tape loop thing (it'll last a few weeks probably)

I love that you call it exercise party. :D Those loaves are beauties.

Rips/Calluses:

Make sure you moisturize the rip, especially before bed, because they like to crack open again in the wintertime and then you just get this hole in your hand that keeps reopening. If you have a heavy duty hand or foot cream, smear that on before bed. If not, vaseline works really well! If you move a lot in your sleep, you can put athletic tape or something over it after you moisturize/slather it up.

Callus maintenance definitely depends on the person, but yeah, like @tei_ said, if it bunches on you, that's a good cue to give it a good scrub. After a shower or bath, you can take a pumice to it or if you're feeling Miss Jackson, you can use a butter knife and scrape some layers off (this sounds really gross, but it's very effective). A nail file probably works as well, but I find it a lot easier to deal with calluses when they are soft from being in the water.

For other prevention, they're more likely if you regrip/shift your hands a lot while you are on the bar. For something like pull-ups and toes-to-bar, your hands will eventually not need to move as much (unless you start doing those big swinging pull-ups and toes-to-bar that the crossfit type places prefer) so if you move your hands less on the bar, you'll be less likely to get them in general!

All of my callus rip prevention stuff has pretty much been covered already!  I always have issues with that with deadlifting but all my hanging shenanigans in aerial somehow leave me unscathed (I think it might also be because deadlift bar has ridges and roughness whereas all the circus apparatus are covered in nice non stabby tape?)  But yeah MOISTURIIIZE MOISTURIZE and I try to file down my hands once a week (OK OK lets be honest more like every few weeks because lazy but I try to do it BEFORE I notice any issues forming with too much hard callus build up!) or so in the shower with a pumice stone.
