Actually, I think I might have picked it up at a similar age and tried to read it but not finished it because I was angry about it in a similar way to you. I wanted to read it properly to see how far ahead of its time it was and to appreciate it properly from an adult perspective. But it was also interesting to evaluate what has changed, which is also quite a lot? Like, something that struck me as very outdated was the thesis of “abuse is inevitable in these sports because tiny children are just naturally better at these movements so the desire for medals will always drive the sport towards younger and smaller competitors.” I think that was the part of the book that was the most bleak— Joan Ryan seemed to truly believe that the drive for success in the highest levels of gymnastics and skating is by definition incompatible with athlete welfare. We now know, or at least suspect, that that isn’t true— at least not in an open-ended code— but to be fair there weren’t a lot of examples to the contrary at the time.

Yeah, a lot has changed with the sport since then, and a lot had changed before that era to get to that point. Women's gymnastics was full of adult women until maybe the mid-1980s -- when after so many winners were tiny, it really warped the composition of all the teams -- and now it is again. It's awesome to see Chuso still in the game, of course, but even without her as an outlier, the overall age at the games is much higher than it was in the Romanian-rules-everything heyday (which of course was the Karyolis again... TROUBLING TRENDSETTERS...).

All of the high performing countries also probably had it worse than our US gymnastics, which is just awful. Korbut, the start of the rise of the really young, tiny gymnasts taking over, was both physical and sexually abused by her coach, so the whole thing came about from very sordid, sad origins. Supposedly, Bogey had a great relationship with her coach but she is one of the only big names I can think of from that era that seemed to be relatively unscathed. You have the Romanians, the Chinese, and the Soviets at the top as well during this period as well... the stories that come out of their programs have not been pretty. I was such a strong advocate that things had gotten much better here in the U.S. and while I still think that is true to a certain extent, the Nassar news really took the wind out of of my stan sails and man, it's hard not to just be furious all of the time.

I do agree that opening up the code has had a huge positive impact. It lets older gymnasts stay in the sport because there are more ways to be competitive. Stuffing your routine full of higher difficulty skills means that the more aesthetically biased judging (see: LINES, SWANLIKE GRACE, etc.) gets dulled a bit overall as well, so that people who don't have that ideal "european" style (aka skinny and white) can't be bullied out of the sport by judges.

Sorry, gymrant (and I'm sure you know a lot of these things, but I'm expounding on some points for our non-gymnerd readers. ;) ). I'm about to read Chalked Up for our gymnastics book club, so I'm sure I'll have plenty more to rant about soon. Jennifer Sey really had a rough go of things.

Day 3.3

This felt fine,  you guys! The only time my trap bothered me was when I was wriggling into my bench set-up, but it felt good during the actual movements. I'm stoked. Also, I hadn't squatted or benched for two weeks, so unsurprisingly, I'm super sore today. My friend had to stay late at work so we didn't get to meet up after all -- probably not a bad thing. I went to the grocery store to pick up some things for the carrot cake, made dinner, watched like one episode of TV, showered, and then it was pretty much bed time.

Day 3.4

Thursday practice was a great departure from Monday. It didn't start out great because it took be about 25 minutes of front tumbling to work up to my double salto pass, but I did actually throw it and it was surprisingly quite good rather than a struggle bus. My front layouts weren't amazing but they were serviceable.

Uprises went well on uneven bars.

And I hit two beam routines.

Deadlifting went okay!  It was all I really had time to do before heading back into town to say hi to CM and get over to my friend's house to help prepare for the team party on Saturday.

Day 3.6

Saturday practice was sufficient. Did a floor routine (and royally messed it up) but beam routines went well. That was really all I worked on. Spent the afternoon finalizing this season's HYPE VIDEO.

The party went really well and really late. I absolutely drank too much.

Day 3.7

Do not leave the couch, do not pass GO, do not collect $200. I accidentally slept through brunch plans with a friend of mine. Binged S3 of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, took a nap, and ordered Indian food. I didn't feel all that bad honestly (no headache, nausea or anything) but had noooo motivation to do anything.

Is that a legit move in 1:46?! The bum bounce on the lower bar? I love it! It's brilliant!

How does the trap feel? still sulking or in a better mood?

Yes! I can't remember what it is actually called but we also just call it a butt bounce. There is a full twisting version that I think is technically banned, but the regular salto version still allowed.

It's doing a bit better. I can move my head more without pain, which is good. During my physical therapy consultation, she decided to do soft tissue manipulation and cupping to try to break up some of the trigger points up the chain for me for now just to make sure I'm as good as I can be for Nationals. I boned an octopus, you guys

6147ad2b9a5edea9563ad6ceb7a52dff.png

Actual exercises and trying to fix my imbalances will start next week. She confirmed my suspicion that my lower trap and rhomboid are not really working together or even at all, so everything has to move up chain into my upper trap, which isn't supposed to have to work that hard to get the things done I want done. Fixing the source will hopefully stop all the random trap strains and the dull pain that's always between my spine and shoulder blade.

Day 4.1

tumblr_m0yircUiJK1qcv2z3o1_500.gif

Pressure makes diamonds, you guys.

Last practice before I leave! I decided to do a bit of everything, but especially focused on my front handspring + front layouts because they were a little off in practice on Saturday. Tumbling felt really solid, though, I am at the point where random body parts are starting to hurt a little bit just from the consistent beating -- like bones in my feet?! What! It's good that there is just one more week of competition season.

After floor, I did a competition style warm-up (where you only get a couple of touches and just a few minutes on the beam to get yourself together) and then straight into a bunch of routines. I fell on the first two, didn't get my series on the next 2, and then the following 3 actually went well. I just need to convince the judges to let me do 4 routines real quick and only judge me on my 5th. :P

Finished up practice with a quick bout of uneven bars -- just doing the skills in my routine. I did two bars routines with "all" of my scant handful of skills and called it a day.

I have seen this move quite a bit in parkour/tricking stuff, but without the bounce part (basically just springing off the bar as you roll backwards into a back flip).  I haven't found a place to practice that particular move yet, but it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult.

We dooo have some satellite members in California that come compete with us at Nationals!  Most are former Boston-area folks that have moved away, but ya know, still an option! America has a lot of pitfalls... especially of late, but Massachusetts isn't that bad. ;)

I've noticed that there tend to be circus gyms, parkour programs, and america ninja warrior gyms in a lot of areas that don't have adult gymnastics. While they are not the same, they develop a lot of similar strengths and also have the benefit of LOOKING COOL! Are those an option near you?

If there's nothing around or their classes are too expensive -- this is one of the biggest barriers to entry, IMO! I'm lucky my gym is only $10 for open gym -- I recommend working on a handstand progression program to get started with fun human tricks. It's a really good baseline strength to have before trying to move on to more advanced gymnastics skills. It's something you can do at home or in an open workout room or studio at a regular gym or outside when the weather is nice. Once you've pursued some handstand work, I know there are a few people on the forums who have made their own parallettes and have been pursuing fun parallette-based training! @@mu for example. :)

8 hours ago, @mu said:

Activation and strengthening work for the rhomboid and lower trap, mostly! If it turns out something else is going weird when I am working on these with her, we'll probably include other things as well.

Haha, yeah, bar starzz type training/competitions tend to be a lot of gymnastics without any of the rules. The bounce would probably be impractical for their kinds of bars -- our bars are flexible + springy. Sounds like you need a bar over a pit to play with. :)

We did one static cup and then the rest was moving/gliding over the totally busted/knotted area between my shoulder blade and spine. I bruise like a peach, so I don't think most people would have the same response/coloration  to the gliding cup section. We only really did it to try to smooth things out for Friday's competition -- it doesn't address any of my underlying movement problems, but supposedly helps clear up some of the tightness I get as a result of them. The shoulder is moving a bit better and the upper trap area feels a good deal better, but the core area that is always bothering me feels about the same.

Just a cool 250... for 3. EEEeeee. I was so, so nervous, but I guess I psyched myself up enough for it because it was much less of a grind than 245# was a few weeks ago. I actually took a little bit of a spot on 145# x 3 but might move it up to 148# next week anyway just because of the principle of the thing.
