We had a hiking goals thread for 2017, let's do one for 2018. I set a goal to go 5 miles in 2017 (which I did) and I haven't set a specific goal for 2018 yet. So I'd love to hear your goals and trip ideas!

I'm in! These are my two goals for 2018, The trip is in October / November. Making the full payment once I'm below 100 kg, hopefully this month / early next month :chuncky:. It's been a great motivation so far! Looking forward to see what everyone else is upto!

I have a trail I want to scope out. It's almost too hot to do anything about it until November now though. Otherwise I don't really have any hiking goals per se. I just want to go out and go hiking. I am sort of on a longer term goal of trying to do all the trails in my area. Or at least all that are day hikes. However hiking has taking a back seat to other goals lately.

That's an awesome motivation! What are you doing to train for it? I'm curious how other hikers train for harder hikes/climbs.

What area are you in? It's just now not freezing out where I am in the northern united states. But I do agree that I prefer winter hikes. no bugs AND no heat!

I'm also not super athletic. Adventurous yes, capable, no. I mainly do day hikes but have a couple overnight things this year. What do you think the next step will be for you?

I want to try to get to atleast 50% of the state parks this summer and hike their trails.

That's awesome! I also tend to treat parks like pokemon, gotta hike them all.

Arizona. We have almost hit 100 a couple times already. July and August has some chance of hiking, but you have to watch out for flash floods. We usually have people who die in June cause they went hiking and got lost and/or ran out of water. 4 in one day last year.

yeah, that absolutely makes sense. 100 degrees is hot hot hot. Even when the high here is above 80 I try to only hike in the early morning. Basically i try not to hike above 80-85 degrees, lol.

My hiking goal is more about getting out there regularly, at least once a month, sometimes once a week in the summer. At some point in my life I'd like to hike the El Camino from Paris, but for now several miles on the Appalachian Trail or its equivalent sound really great.

I have a basic pack that I take everywhere, and I almost always wear the same thing -- my family and I refer to it as my uniform. It works for me. Frankly, I don't know that I would take much that would be different for a multi-day or multi-month long hike.

I tend to keep updates on hikes in my current thread as they happen. A comprehensive list of hikes sort of ends up on the Hiking label on my blog.
