Just curious, everyone:

What kind of music do you listen to while working/studying? Or do you prefer silence? Do you work/study better when the music has no words? Quiet music or loud music? Post some of your favorites below.

I must confess, as a coffee shop/bookstore nerd, I love listening to playlists with the kind of jams you might here in these two places. I do better with instrumental music, so my search is usually something like "coffee shop instrumental" like the one below:

Great group! Epic music makes me want to do something awesome, like go into battle or storm the gates of a castle or something. I usually reserve this kind of music for my workouts rather than work/study. :D

If I really need to focus then I resort to asoftmurmur.com, but otherwise I like to listen to instrumental indie/rock, electro-swing or classical. I usually just load a random playlist like this one:

Level 1 Dwarven Ranger

STR 0 | DEX 0 | CON | STA 0 | WIS 0 |CHA 0

Battlelog | NF Character Sheet Template 2.0 (stats system) | NF Character Sheet Template v3.0 (XP system)

SILENCE!

I don't mind background music, and I sometimes I really enjoy it if it is on, but I almost never put it on of my own volition. It just rarely occurs to me to put on any music at all unless there is something else I am trying to drown out the sound of, or if it is a piece I am trying to memorize. My old housemate was boggled that my partner and I would frequently just sit in complete silence on long car rides, not even talking, just lost in our own thoughts.

In the past I've occasionally used to have a "pomodoro method" type ticking timer when I was doing computer work - to remind me to work and not screw around - but it tweaks my partner out.

This varies wildly depending on my state of mind, environment, and the work at hand.

Common go-tos are:

Silence (SO HARD TO FIND I often put on music to drown out co-workers)

Cat Stevens

The Beatles

Gaelic Storm

Dropkick Murphys

Metallica

Monster Magnet

Irish trad

Enya

Clannad

Deep Forest

Fellowship of the Rings Soundtrack

Braveheart Soundtrack

Star Wars Soundtrack

1920s jazz (I have a mixed list)

Ella Fitzgerald

Cab Calloway

Coffitivity: https://coffitivity.com/

Rain sounds (I have an app)

Or, whatever I'm obsessing over at the moment. Most recent favorites include:

The Pierces

Eliza Rickman

Ok, as a big fan of Bennie Goodman, Cab Calloway, and Ella Fitzgerald, I'm stoked for some free time to google this "electro-swing" thing. I may have heard some of it before, not knowing that is what it was called, as I have heard a smattering of more modern cats.

I’m currently rereading the Dead West books by J. Patrick Allen, West of Pale and Bond of Blood, in anticipation of the release of the third book.

I’m also reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, Imaginary Friends Amalia Dillin, and I'm finishing up The Power Broker (the bio of Robert Moses).

I can dig on some Gladwell. I love how intelligent and funny his writing is sometimes, like I feel like I learn something and get a good chuckle. The Tipping Point really changed the way I looked at a lot of things, especially children's shows and advertising.

It was a gift from my sister and brother-in-law, along with a book about antique furniture restoration. I’m enjoying it so far.

Currently reading:

Children of Hurin

Cooking For Geeks (yes, still. I've been slowly picking away at this one for a long time)

Living With Intensity

Britain's Real Heritage Pubs

Frommer's Edinburgh & Glasgow

Bien Dit! (French text book)

Women in Pants: Manly Maidens, Cowgirls, and Other Renegades

There's also a baseball program from the local AAA team on my night stand, because I'm studying the system for recording plays shorthand, or whatever you call it.

Plus rpg books. We relatively recently started a new system (Starfinder) so I have a universe to learn.  I made it extra hard on myself by designing an academic character, so... yeah.

I try not to pick up too many books at a time, but I'm not always successful...

I just posted somewhere. Something Wicked This Way Comes is my current book. I read the first one in the "series" and enjoyed Bradbury's ramblings.

Side note: is anyone else so tired of every flipping book becoming part of a "series"?

Something Wicked... is fantastic, isn't it?!  Bradbury is one of my favorites, and especially that one!! See, I'm even adding extra exclamation points!!

I have mixed feelings about the film adaptation of books... I always have. But I'd much rather they go nuts on book adaptations than continue the trend of just re-making every movie we've already seen. At least that way we have new-ish things to watch.

Semantics question for all you language nerds:

The phrase "future outlook" seems to be commonly accepted lexicon, but isn't it redundant? Regardless of common use, should it just be "outlook" or something similarly simple? I'm putting together a presentation for work and every time I see "future outlook" it grates. I am wondering if I should change it. I know it's a small thing, but I've also enjoyed meetings that completely revolved around arguments over commas. We're a picky bunch over here.

I would need to see the context of the sentence to determine which is best, but yeah, you could remove "future" unless it's necessary. I hesitate to tell people to cut words, even if they do seem redundant, because sometimes keeping the word has a better impact on fluency. That's why written language and spoken language follow different rules sometimes.

From a definitions point of view, outlook doesn't necessarily pertain to the future, so it's not technically redundant by itself. Though without the full sentence context, it is hard to 100% say.

That being said, it grates on me too. I have a deep seeded hatred of "business jargon". So depending on your audience, get it out of there.

I'd say that it depends on context, but there is probably a more clear and concise way to say it.
