Experiments in Rangering [Owlet]

Hi Rangers! I'm new here :) I've been hanging out in the Druids forum but it occurred to me that I have so many goals I'm constantly trying to hit, maybe a stint in Rangers could help me.. feel free to share your rangery wisdom with me!

So here's the deal... I have a sedentary job and it's a constant battle to keep my body mobile enough that I don't seize up completely and topple over. Meanwhile, I have a passion for hiking but the best hikes are long and hard, and it really does help to be fit! I also really want to change jobs but before I can even apply I need to do some serious up-skilling, in my own time.

Here's the plan:

1 minute plank, daily - core strength makes everything better and I used to be good at this but I've let it slip over the last year. Time to bring back abs of steel!

6000 steps, 5/7 days - unless I go for a walk, it is really hard to hit 6000 steps in a day - and frankly, 6000 isn't even that many so I really need to at least hit 6000. This will require a lunchtime walk or run, or parking further from work and doing it that way.

physio exercises 2/7 days - to help with my neck and back which get sore from sitting at a desk all day

run 1/7 days - I've been doing this for a while now and ideally want to move up to 2 runs a week but as winter is approaching, it will be weather dependant.

up-skilling 5 hours/week - this is the bare minimum, ideally I will do more on this goal but I'm keeping it low at this stage so I don't freak out and skip it altogether. I want to try and do an hour after work at least 2 evenings a week and the rest on weekends when I have more time. Lately I've been very lazy during weeknights though and I think I could utilise that time much better.

5 hours/week5 hours/week

And because I've not had much success with vague goals in the past, here's a rough timetable to make sure I hit goals:

Monday - plank, 6000, physio

Tuesday - plank, up-skilling

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Thursday - plank, 6000, run

Friday - plank, 6000

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio, up-skilling

Sunday - plank, up-skilling

Obviously the timetable is a bit flexible, I just want to try and keep track of when I'm doing my goals so it's not a mad dash at the end of each week, or skipping them altogether. Wish me luck!

And finally, what's your number one tip on DOING ALL THE THINGS as well as having time to relax, eat, sleep, socialise, work and call your mum XD

Yep, your a Ranger!  but as many us know- Most of all the NF rebels are & they just don't know it.

my #1 tip.  Watch the time!  Everything EVERYTHING seems to boils around to managing time.  wake up Without hitting the snooze and moping around Half dead- and you have a morning workout.  Eat efficiently & you can walk or run during lunch.  Clean the Clutter in the House WHILE talking to mum and you get an evening workout.

etc

etc

etc

Not easily done and a constant battle. but its so worth it!

I'll have to look up "up-skiing"- I've never heard of it...

I feel you on the daily steps. My fitbit goal is 8000 and I never hit it consistently. I usually hit it on weekends by accident, but I'm so sedentary during the work week. I like your idea of scheduling yourself so that you don't have to play catch up at the end of the week!

Sweet, well I've already got the lunchtime walk/run thing down (maybe too much... everyone else in my office hangs out at lunch but I see that as wasted time so I think I have a reputation for being antisocial XD) Waking up... well I do ok at that but I only wake up early enough to beat the traffic and get to work, not to do a workout... Thanks for the tips!

huh

google is struggling with that.  "upskiing" means gaining new skills at work , then there is 'taking UP skiing', 'growing up skiiing', and 'UP michigan skiing',etc

?

:curious

Lol, well it'll make slightly more sense if you put some L's in there, but it's still a nonsense word, kinda like 'up-cycling' I guess. Basically I need to learn some new skills so I am better qualified for the job I want. If it involved skiing I'd be much happier about it, believe me!

Yeah weekends are much easier!

Thanks for the welcome everyone :) Week zero is going well so far!

Monday - plank, 6000, physio, run

Tuesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling, run

Thursday - plank, 6000

Friday - plank, 6000

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio, up-skilling

Sunday - plank, up-skilling

Considering I hadn't worked out my timetable until yesterday, I'm not worried I missed physio and one session of up-skilling, and I got a bonus run in on Monday. I moved my Thursday run to Wednesday as I have a work commitment during Thursday lunch and I managed to set a new PB for 5km :D So today I will do my plank and 6000 steps, and a physio workout after work.

Busy weekend but I'll try remember enough to update:

Monday - plank, 6000, physio, run

Tuesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling, run

Thursday - plank, 6000, physio

Friday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio

Sunday - plank, up-skilling, 6000

Did really well with steps on the weekend - 16000 and 21000! Not so well with other goals though and now I'm really tired. Been struggling to get that plank in too, will try keep that one as a priority this week.

Good luck for this challenge!

Hahaha fair point. Luckily they are not all so bad but I am the only female in my office so I get bored of their talk sometimes...

Camping sounds fun.Way to go on getting those steps in.

Thanks! It was mostly due to going to a concert haha. Music really is good for your health ;)

Didn't quite manage to hit 6000 steps yesterday, was just a couple of hundred off. Could have walked around a bit in the evening to get them but honestly I was just so tired I could barely even stay awake. Today I plan to be super productive though and tick off all my goals!

Very happy with how week 1 went :) The software-learning is coming along well and I actually feel motivated to keep going with it for once - in the past when I've tried I've given up fairly quickly. Here's to week 2!

Weekend was a bit of a right-off... suddenly started feeling very stressed and overwhelmed. I made some progress on saturday but then hit a problem with the software-learning on sunday and it took me until Wednesday to work out how to fix, despite hours of research and trying different options. A good feeling once I got there but it really threw me for a few days. I've also been feeling very fatigued and actually thought I might be getting sick. After 2 days off work I am finally starting to feel a bit more normal (and therefore positive), thank goodness. So here's a summary of last week's goals:

Monday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Tuesday - plank, 6000,  physio

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Thursday - plank, 6000

Friday - plank, 6000, run

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio, up-skilling

Sunday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

And for this week so far:

Monday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Tuesday - plank, 6000,  physio, up-skilling

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Thursday - plank, 6000

Friday - plank, 6000, run

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio, up-skilling

Sunday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Great persistence with the software learning.  Hopefully you fought off whatever plague was trying to get you.

Thanks :) So far I have not succumbed to the plague. I'm still really struggling with energy levels though. I felt ok on saturday morning but by early evening I was so tired I felt faint at times (and unfortunately wasn't able to stay home and go to bed early) tried to take it easy all weekend but ended up feeling pretty dispirited as a result. Fingers crossed for a better week this week.

Goals:

Monday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Tuesday - plank, 6000,  physio, up-skilling

Wednesday - plank, 6000, up-skilling

Thursday - plank, 6000

Friday - plank, 6000, run

Saturday - plank, 6000, physio, up-skilling

Sunday - plank, 6000, up-skilling
