Sooooooo......

 

I've just come off a little push/pull meet (Benched 112.5kg for a new meet PR and Deadlifted 200kg for a bodyweight PR - competed at 93kg) and now I have 2 weeks before I wander off on a long holiday.... Yay.

 

So I have zero goals for this challenge except (for the first half) to push really damned hard on the gym stuff so I can go into my holidays as strong as I possibly can be - bearing in mind my holiday is 4 weeks and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do ANY lifting while I'm away, so I would like to minimise the losses for when I come back. The second half of the challenge will just be me posting holiday snaps and gloating because holiday...

Monday 16 Apr:

 

True to my word, I did whatever I wanted in the gym...

 

Box squats with Safety Squat Bar + reverse bands + single ply suit: Top single of 220kg (probs about 190kg in the hole). I used all the cheating to do this because I've never had 5 plates on a squat bar before. It was deeply fulfilling. Also worth noting that I can't physically fit any more weight on my safety squat bar.

Sumo Deadlifts: 150kg for 3 x 3

Assistance work: Leg Pressing and back extensions.

 

Still haven't even thought about packing for the trip and will probably do it the day before and hope for the best.

Holiday plans: We leave on the 29th for Russia - couple of days in Hong Kong, 3 weeks in Russia split between St Petersburg and Moscow, then a coupleof days in Dubai on the way back. Holiday is gonna be epic... but.... can't say I'm looking forward to the travel - there are several 12-13hr flights in there...

 

Re: longer bar... I'm not sure Mrs Blocky will let me spend more money on gym toys... My regular squat bar will take 700lbs so that should last me for a while... silly safety squat bar only fits 500lbs but I can probably find a way to add chains (or maybe wear a backpack)...

Wed 18 Apr:

 

Still doing whatever I feel like...

 

Reverse band Bench (+20kg at lockout): Top single of 115kg, then 8 singles at 90%ish or 102.5kg

Closegrip Bench vs 10kg chains: sets of 3 up to 2 sets at 90kg + chains, then 1 x 8 at 70kg.

Assistance: TRX rows, DB bench, pushdowns

 

Mrs Blocky found some low-carb dark-chocolate almond milk whilst shopping... and it is amazing... roughly 50Cal per glass... Also mixes well with my protein powder (which is nice - I've been avoiding it a little because I hates it when it's made on water).

 

Also.... a Blocky health update... My adductor tear seems to have healed ok and so has my bulging disc... my shoulder is just being an annoying shoulder (not bad enough for surgery, but bad enough that benching is a PITA - however it's not getting any worse so I'm hoping the holiday is enough time to get some healing done) the only real issue I have right now is I popped my SI joint in the week leading up to the meet, so I'm going to get in to see my Chiro a couple of times before my holiday to get that fixed.

Soooo..... I got some dissapointing news today... I got myself another DXA scan and after 3 months of hard fucking work and above average protein intake... I made zero gains muscle wise. Like 0% difference. Every single number was the same.

 

So it looks like I'm a hardgainer and since it doesn't work, I'm ditching the higher rep hypertrophy stuff in favour of lower reps strength stuff and I'm just going to focus on strength.

 - which, to be fair, I prefer doing anyway.

 

My wife's doc has started doing functional medicine, so I'll get him to run a hormone panel and try and nail down why I can't build muscle. There has to be reason, I just need to find it.

Friday 20 Apr:

 

Box squats with Safety Squat Bar: Top single of 160kg, then 16 (not a typo) sets of 2 at weights between 80 - 105kg with 45 secs rest, focusing on speed.

Conventional Deadlifts: 150kg for 5 sets of 2

Assistance work: Lunging and back extensions.

Pause Bench: top single of 112.5kg, 4 reps at 100kg

Dips: 4 x 6

OHP: 30kg x 8, 40kg x 8, 45kg x 8

Pullups: 4 x 3

Pushups x lots

 

Apparently the lunges yesterday were NOT a good idea... I have all the ass DOMs... I can't even sit down without pain.

4 week vacation!?!?! I am ridiculously jealous! Can't wait to see those pics from Russia! Ive been dying to go to Northern Ireland, but its so damn expensive.

Interesting on the DXA scan... very hard to believe you haven't gained any muscle?! good idea to get opinions from other docs and different tests.

If you buy thinner plates you can fit more weight onto EVERY bar. Clearly a better investment than a new SSB.

 

How long between DXA scans for zero results?

I'm already using thinnish iron plates... it's just has short sleeves... If I used my bumpers I'd only get 3 on each end.

Holiday... Day 1 - Dubai

 

13.5 hr flight... ugh... wasn't the worst. Watched some sci-fi for 4 hours, slept for 6 and a bit (thanks to some sleeping tabs) and a little more tv until landing.

 

Dropped our shit off at the hotel and had brekky. Was able to keep it keto with some roast chicken, cheese, cold cuts and coffee.

 

Then.... LEGOLAND!!!!!!

 

Good day out, back to hotel, went for walk, saw a sweet McLaren and then a Lamborghini, now back at the hotel with vodka...
