Teancum forms a PACT

I'm back!!

My time away from the forums was needed, but not as I had anticipated. There was at least some sense of accountability here, which I now realize I really  need. Also, I decided to leave for a bit because I was getting into the mode of failing half way through the challenge and thinking "oh well, I'll just give up and start again next challenge", which was not a healthy attitude. The problem was, when I wasn't on the forums there wasn't even the "next challenge" to encourage me to start again!!! So I'm back, but this time with a plan to have each challenge build on the last, helping me focus on the long term, and not just month to month.

As some background, I've been involved with Nerd Fitness for over 2 years now, and haven't made a lot of progress. I guess I shouldn't say that. At some times I've made pretty good progress, I just always end up backtracking again. This most recent backtrack started in November, where for some reason I just subconsciously decided to completely give up, and then all of a sudden I'm back up to my highest weight ever a few months later and am essentially starting over.

I'm turning 30 in just over a year, and have been thinking about the kind of man I want to be in all areas of my life. By far my biggest challenge is physically, where I cannot seem to sustain my weight loss progress, but there are other areas of my life I would like to improve too. I've been inspired recently by the words of Paul "But when I became a man, I put away childish things." There are a lot of childish things I still hold on to, most notably over eating and bingeing on junk food. I also don't use my time as effectively as I would like. Hence I decided I needed to make a contract with myself to Put Away Childish Things (PACT). This consists of an 18 month plan to be more of the man I want to be before I turn 30. It consists of goals to accomplish and habits to develop each month, which build and expand upon each other. This plan is living - I will update it and shift the goals as necessary and appropriate, but what it does is help me to be forward thinking - to have the end in mind, and a rough outline of how I plan to get there day by day. I am trying to take into account events and challenges that come up each month, so I can anticipate a way to maintain or adjust my goals accordingly (ex. big vacations, change in work schedule, special events, etc.). This way I hope to start small, plan to succeed, and let the momentum build. When it is more complete, I might post the full plan if anyone's interested.

So that's the intro post. I hope that you and I will see a transformation in myself over this next year and a half. I appreciate the support and accountability you provide. Sorry for the essay, see my goals for the first month below!

APRIL GOALS

  • Post here daily for accountability - YES/NO
  • Eat less than 2750 calories/day - YES/NO
  • Go for a walk daily - YES/NO
  • Complete the overview for my PACT plan by end of April - Pending/Completed/Not completed

I'm going to try to get into the habit of daily posting for accountability. The posts won't be flashy, especially this challenge as I'm not going to worry about a theme or anything, but they will be daily.

2750 calories is too much for me, but on my bad days recently I've been eating over 3000, so I'm starting off with an easy limit that I can get used to sticking to and will hopefully halt some bad habits

It's (FINALLY) spring after 6 months of winter!!! I've been walking a lot more and I want to keep it up as I enjoy it and now that the cold is gone I have no excuse not to.

I've been using Habitica the past few months, and have enjoyed it fairly well, so I will use that and this forum to keep track of my goals.

Not the ideal start... Made some poor choices early in the day which caused me to be hungry and overeat at night. Better tomorrow!

Looking good! Way to go on hitting all the goals 2 in a row :)

Thanks! I cut it a bit close today on calories, but managed to hang in there!

Over-ate again. But I also learned some things:

1. I feel crappy when I eat too much, especially junk

2. I feel crappy when I have too much sugar - I've been cutting back on sugar recently, and today's indulgence was a very good reminder of why cutting back is important

3. I need a plan for high risk situations, or else I will fail. My parents came by today - bringing doughnuts, chocolate, and pizza. A formula for distaster. If I had a plan beforehand I may have done better

In other news, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow for the first time in years. I assume we'll get some blood work and see how bad things really are. Hard to know, but I have to admit I'm a little worried...

Somehow I have the feeling there should be a Nerd Fitness blog post about this... Maybe check the usual suspects for advice: Mark Sisson, Tim Ferriss, etc. There should be some strategies to find...

That's a good idea! I think Steve was looking for suggestions recently

Doctor was fine today, but I wasn't really worried about that part. Got the req for blood work which is what I'm actually nervous about seeing the results for. If it's bad hopefully it'll be the kick in the pants I need though.

Had some delicious souvlaki seasoned pork chops from Costco today, with homemade Greek salad. It was super tasty!!

It's weird how our mind works, isn't it?

Way to go, you are rocking this!

Thank you! The goals are pretty easy, but that's the point this month. Honestly I was hoping for a perfect score, but I can live with a couple slip ups.

That is always a big problem for me: One the one hand I want to give my best and really try to do everything perfectly. On the other hand I cannot allow myself to cling to failure.

Yeah I struggle with it too. In some ways it was good to get a slip up out of the way early though, cause I find if I'm perfect for 2 weeks and then mess up I have a tendency to give up for the rest of the challenge (which is obviously silly, but it is what it is)

Cut it close with calories today and did a quick walk at like 11pm, but got it in. I'm hoping to flesh out the rest of my plan a bit tomorrow.

Did a midnight walk again. I need to finish my plan tomorrow I guess, but I'm also studying for a big test on Wednesday, so there's a chance I might extend it.

Tonight we were at my in laws, and although I had a bit more sugar than I intended, I didn't go crazy like I normally do, and I held off earlier in the day knowing it was coming up. I forgot to make an actual plan, but I'm glad it worked out pretty well.

Also the scale finally decided to catch up to my actions today, which is always nice!

I'll report tomorrow and then slightly new goals on the way for May!
