Silmarilliane's Eighteenth Challenge

Silmarilliane

Hey folks!

Good to be back :D

I've built up some good habits over the past few years doing challenges on and (mainly) off, but have found the weight/size creeping back up and not shifting as it once did. Coming up to summer I have a bunch of clothes that don't fit as they once did, and I don't feel like the strength and health is as on track as it has been. My weight was a fairly steady 11-11.5 stone for a good long while, but it's crept up to 12 stone in the last year, and then over in the last few months. Currently at just under 12 stone (168lbs) and wanting to get down below 11.5 by my birthday at the end of July.

I started a Step into Health course through work which has modules of exercise, nutrition and stress management. It's helped me get a bit more focused, so I'm formalising it by putting it on the interwebs so I have to do it. Plus I miss y'all innit.

Exercise plan, current habit followed by ~ what I'm adding

Working days:

- 20 press-ups with my feet on the bed ~ increase to 25

- 10 min jog around the block ~ sprint (or at least speed up) the last section on each run

- 3x10 dumbbell reps of two exercises (bicep curl + lat flies OR bent over rows + military press) ~ dumbbells for curl & miltary upped in weight

All days:

- 3 min squat while teeth brushing (I try to hold the full amount of time, but sometimes have to stand and squat again) ~ lower squat and get length of time back on track

Additions:

+ 10,000 steps every day (I usually do this during the week so need to get this sorted for weekends)

+ I joined (and paid for) a pilates course each Monday evening, so will have to do these!

+ I haven't used my pull-up bar in ages, so I'm going to add 15 'negative' chin-ups on days I'm not washing hair (alternate days)

Food plan

I track calories on myfitnesspal, and I've set it to 1600 per day. My problem is on days I go over, I go way over bcuz tasty. I've looked ahead and there are a few days that may scupper eating healthy - niece's birthday this weekend and going to Newcastle for a singing competition for the weekend of 12th May. I'm aware there are days I go over a few cals, so as long any rolling 3 days averages under 1600, that's fine. I'm allowing myself four separate days over calories within the challenge.

Points and scoring

I have a tendency to be quite harsh on myself and this is possibly not helpful for the long term (i.e. if I fail within one week I'll give up on the rest), so although I'm allocating points, final grade will be based on assessment of the challenge as a whole and essentially arbitrarily assigned by myself, though with feedback from others if they offer it!

Complete full exercise plan for a week = 100 points

Reduced run, missed dumbells, not 10,000 steps, missed negative chin-ups = minus 5 points for each

Missed pilates = £10 lost, so I won't take points off too...

Two weeks of 100 points in a row gets me 25 bonus points

All four weeks gets an additional 25 bonus points

Max exercise points = 500 points

Under calories every day for a week = 100 points

Day over 1600 but under 1700 = minus 5 points

Day over 1600 but stayed relatively health = minus 10 points

Day over 1600 and splurged = minus 25 points

Two weeks of 100 points in a row gets me 25 bonus points

All four weeks gets an additional 25 bonus points

Max calorie points = 500 points

Total possible points = 1000

Day one success! Tube line was down so I had to get the bus and a different line (much less walking) but have still managed 10973 steps so far and the day isn't over.

Remembered to up the press-ups to 25, sped up the end of the run and added* negative pull ups.

Discovered the joys of Encona hot sauce with dinner, YUM

*attempted, my word I haven't done those in a good long while!

good to meet you.

I have found that taking advantage of little opportunities for extra exercise is Huge!
Thanks, yes I definitely do better adding little bits in at a time!

Day three and four yay to success also. Today was cutting it fine at exactly 1600 calories, but I've been under a so far so I won't let the lack of 'under her calories' on mfp bother me as it once did!
So needing the weekend right now, this has been a very long week...

Ah, the DOMS have eased off over the week, though I'm still finding the negative chin-ups more like flailing fall downs tbh...

However, day five is a success, and I even went to the pub after work - one g&t and then lime and soda. I'm out most of tomorrow doing this random thing so I'm hoping some breakfast and a protein bar for the walking will do me until dinner time (I usually only do two meals a day at weekends). Wish me luck!

Week 1 end summary. Today was the niece's birthday, so as expected I didn't eat great (all the cheeses) and also spent most of the day on my bum. I attempted to do 10,000 steps and have got to 7,000 marching in front of the TV but I need sleep more than I need that full 100 points. Tbf I got back from the party on less than 2,000 so I feel I've done well!
All other exercises complete this week, point score 95
All days under calories, except one where I forgot I ate a custard creme and it put me over, and today where I splurged, point score 70
Week 1 total 165

Monday and Tuesday success, despite having to march around for about 1000 steps before I got into bed this eve. Listening to every version of Whiter Shade of Pale on Spotify, just bcuz.

Was my singing convention dress rehearsal this eve, so looking forward to the competition next weekend!

Wednesday to Friday all successes, woohoo!

Today was tricky as doughnuts were brought in this morning, the team went out for Franco Manca for lunch and I had a Guinness waiting for me when I joined the team for drinks after work, but still made it in under calories by not eating ALL THE FOODS, yeay me [emoji3]

Way to go!! Work parties are tough and I still haven't mastered not eating ALL THE FOODS - so good for you!!

How are your other goals going? I just saw that you have a singing competition next week - that's so cool! How is your prep going for that?

Thanks, work party struggles are real!

Singing prep is going really well, had our last full rehearsal this evening and I'm super excited to be heading up to Newcastle for it (also because 1. I have a spa session booked for when I arrive and 2. One of my allowed over calorie days will be at a beer and meat place after the competition)

Oh yes, forgot to do a week-end-summary. So I did all the exercises with the exception of Saturday which didn't get over 10,000 steps, though I did plant a cherry tree and repaint the kitchen so I don't feel too bad about that. Total points 95 I believe.
Food wise, I was under calories every day except Sunday, which was a bit of a day out and nice food. This was probably a splurge day so minus 25. I think there was another day very slightly over calories, so I put down 70 for the week.
Total points for week two: 165

Nice weekend. Even if you didn't get your steps in, that was a lot of movement and you made your world prettier too.

So, long weekend of BARBERSHOP! Ahh so much fun, and we WON the small chorus category, woohoo!

Challenge-wise, I definitely had the Saturday over calories with celebratory food and drink, but the other days I largely ate well despite not fully calorie counting (and the hotel had a breakfast buffet - I should get extra points just for that!) Due to this, I'm going to dock myself the 25 for splurge day, but only a further 5 for the other days combined. Total 70 points.

Exercises - I did a run/weights etc and additional chin-up-negs on Thursday even though I technically didn't need to (I was off work Thursday-today and Thursday was a hair washing day) and although my pedometer says I only did 8752 steps on Saturday, as I was in chorus outfit (no pockets) I definitely did more than this, and Sunday I did 20,000+ so I'm not going to dock myself any exercise points this week. I also did a bunch of swimming on Thursday and won a singing competition so... 100 points

Total points for the week 170

Total points so far = 500

This is out of a possible 700 putting me at just over 70% so far

Sorry, I didn't get a notification for this (or I missed it bcuz this week has been pretty manic!)

Thanks for the congrats, it was so much fun and we put loads of effort in so I'm glad it paid off!
The steps was because I had an extra hour or so in Newcastle after everyone else left so I decided to walk up to a pretty park, took loads of photos and misjudged getting back so had to pretty much run haha! Oh yes, also because in the morning I walked off a hangover...

Final summary of the challenge time!

Monday was a bank holiday, so although I stayed under calories, I only did half the steps I should have. The rest of the week was on track under calories, exercise and steps except yesterday - day with the bf and birthday drinks in the eve so neither steps nor calories successful!
Today I'm not convinced I was under calories but the end was at a buffet and I selected a few choice items and did not eat a the foods, yeay me! Steps are only just under (9500) but I don't want to march around my bedroom for 500 steps as it's late and work tomoz.

So points wise, I give myself 70 for calories and 90 for exercise = 160 total for the week

Total points for the challenge = 660

I'm aware I had planned an original total possible points of 1000 based on combo week bonus, but this hasn't been helpful as it meant one day over ballsed up future week bonuses. Therefore I'll count it out of 800 instead which gives me 82.5% and a grade of B- and a level up!

Thanks for the comments and feedback guys, hope to see you in the next challenge :)
