Saturday - we cleaned the house for the Missus return. I was able to get an evening ride in.  I tried the new hill again.  It starts with a 1.2 mile / 2 km section with a consistent grade that happens to be a Strava segment. I’m going to use this as a power benchmark. I did it in just under 7 minutes, which Starva estimates as a sustained 170 Watts.  I really don’t know if that’s good or not. Probably not; fastest time up it this year so far, but about halfway down the leaderboard for all time.

I did a hill workout. About 4 or 5 miles to the hill - it’s about 4/10 mile long / .6km.  I did 6 repeats and then the legs slowed down and I rode home, about 18 miles / 30 km. Strava estimated my power at 216-260 Watts, with one hill at 308 Watts. If you disregard the 308, that puts me at a beginner road racer level, which makes more sense. My overly large ego feels good again. I’ll have to get a power meter if I really want to know how much power I produce, but that’s a bit rich for me.

 

Hmmm....a leisurely lunch followed by errands doesn't sound like much of a euphemism.

A spaniel of some sort. I don’t know her story, she came in on her own which usually means an owner surrender, she was very grubby (she got a bath today, we usually let them settle in first), is a bit underfed, just had puppies, and has a leg that was broken and never set or set badly. Sheep dog X Spaniel? Beautiful none-the-less. Either back yard breeder or some one who didn't care enough to have their animal sterilised (or injuries treated) to not have any unwanted puppies, and when it happened for the "how many-ith time" they gave the dog up. That happens in certain communities here. At least now she has a chance at a better home.

Lucy looks a bit like a liver and white Brittany I used to have, but they usually get their tails docked as pups. If she does have some Brittany in her, she'll be super curious, love hanging out with people more than dogs, be great around kids and need lots of exercise or will get herself into lots of trouble. At least, that's been my experience with the three Brittanies I've had over the years but I've never had one that was a rescue. So, I'm not sure who well they do in that situation.

Haha. Ain’t that the truth. I don’t mind so much when they mine my cookies, but I get really creeped out when ads show up about things I’ve discussed on email or worse in person.

I actually think he was hoping I’d turn around and “talk” to him. Guys are overly creepy sometimes. 

 

I think you’re right. She has some household skills. She was probably a neglected pet that they tired of or they didn’t want, or couldn’t, deal with the vet bills for her leg and spaying.

6/19/18 Tuesday

 

Another rainy day. I wouldn’t mind if we had a few sunny days and the trails dried up enough to ride.  

 

It’s been raining up north too.  The trails for the race I’ve been debating about have to be a mud pile. That settled it for me, I don’t want the trouble and expense of replacing the chain and gears and having to repack the bearings so I’m officially staying home. This will be a busy weekend anyway and Mrs. Sloth will appreciate my presence. 

 

It rained all morning. I had a giant coffee which zonked me out and I fell asleep right after I dropped the kids off (it’s a rough life). After it stopped rain8ng long enough for the roads to dry off I went for a ride - 2 hours at a recovery pace, I got 25 miles in. I went somewhere new; I went through the city’s industrial zone - past the port of Minneapolis and rode over the train yard - and came back through the university. It was an interesting ride, but I won’t repeat it any time soon.  I got rained on for the last half hour or so.  

 

@The Most Loathed and his lovely wife stopped by and checked out Lucy. They seemed to like each other.

Boy howdy has it! 10-11 inches of rain in a 24 hour period?!? Granted that's not Houston during a hurricane like totals, but it's still a lot of water in a short amount of time. I think you made the right choice.

She looks a lot like the internet’s pictures of chocolate border collies and her fur is different from the Brittany/springer we had, but the thing is she’s little, maybe 30# filled out and has stumpy legs.  Oh well, TML can figure it out. 

 

Yeah, I have relatives that live by Ashland. They’re stranded because the highway was washed out. Wisconsin was hit crazy bad.

Need.  No.  We have many bins of stuffed animals.  I have no idea how.  I put a moratorium on new stuffy purchases when we filled the first bin.  It’s insane. That one is cool though, maybe even cooler than the four other sloth stuffies we have.

6/20/18 Wednesday. 

 

We’ve entered the summer chill zone. My belly has stopped acting up even though I haven’t cleaned up my diet much. I may have been underestimating how much stress affects it.

 

 More driving the kids around today.  The kids had their ballet dress rehearsal today. We’re going to let Slothgirl drop ballet and focus on circus.  She loves to dance, but she had a string of unfortunate teacher experiences and is turned off of it right now. Slothboy will continue. He seems to have been born to dance, which is weird, considering his parents.  Like most boys, he would like to drop everything and focus on Minecraft. 

 

I got in a 2 hr ride.  I wanted to ride tempo, but my legs said meh, so I focused on leg speed and riding smoothly.  I think I got 28 miles in. My legs could use a day off, but I don’t want to take one, because if I do there will be a deluge or a family crisis and I’ll end up with a long string of days without riding.

That was what I was thinking too, what we call shepherd dogs (skaaphonde/sheep dogs) in South Africa. But as long as she finds a loving home, her heritage is not that important. She is at least a proper dog

Yeah when I saw that dog I thought "Border Collie!!!!"  They're the best.  I'd adopt her if you didn't live in Minnesota.  I had one that flirted with 30# all the time, but never really stayed above that weight.  She was a small one but they do exist.

 

Cool that both your kids dance.  And while circus is rough, it's definitely fun.  What apparatus does little girl like?  And good for your son for sticking with the ballet.  It's hard at that age.

Completely understand. As you know my legs are also trashed. And I run on lots of days that I could skip for similar reasons.

She seems to have a good home lined up. We’ll have her for a while either way - which is fine, Mrs. Sloth loves her - she needs to get spayed and her leg needs to get looked. Since they use donated and discounted services everything takes time.

Slothgirl used to love the idea of flying trapeze, but now that she’s old enough to start on that she is getting cold feet. Right now her love is Moroccan pyramid (tumbling and human pyramids). She would love to do silks, but she’s too young. She’s already done rings and a couple of types of static trapeze. 

 

Slothboy is sticking it out because we’re making him. He really loves dance, but this year it became weird for him to be the only boy in his classes. I’m insisting he has at least one physical outlet and he doesn’t like typical sports so he might be stuck with it forever. Eventually he’ll like being surrounded by girls.

I’m not sure what to do about the belly. I don’t see my job stress ending any time soon. 

 

I think we’re similar in a lot of ways. You just need more wheels and Lycra in your life.

6/21/18 Thursday - Happy Solstice. 

 

The kids had their dance recital today. It went well. You could tell they were nervous, but they looked good. Slothgirl was surprisingly elegant; I’m always shocked when she looks or acts grown up. 

 

I thought today would would be the day I yogaed and TRXed, instead I cleaned up the yard and set up the kid’s pool.

 

I haven’t been sleeping because Ewok dog barks every time anything goes by the house (car, pedestrian, leaf blowing down the street). She does this all night long and it takes me forever to fall back asleep. Getting up and getting moving is extremely hard now. She also bites people’s toes when she is displeased. She has one last vet visit on Sunday and we can hand her off. I won’t miss this one. 

 

I had planned on hills today, but I think the MtBike trails will finally be open tomorrow. I did an easy hour long ride today so that I can hit it hard tomorrow.

6/22/18 Friday - 

 

Mrs. Sloth invited some of the kid’s friends along to the Children’s Museum which seriously limited my time at the trail. I managed one lap, ~6 miles, but it was slow. 

 

My knee has been bothering me. I adjusted my seat until it went away when riding the road bike, but off-road I couldn’t turn left well or apply much force. I don’t think it’s related to biking, but instead it’s my janky hips radiating out dysfunction. 

 

Also, it’s tiny frog season. I rescued this one from the parking lot before she fried. 

 

 

This evening I’m going to a graduation/ birthday party. I was going to wear shorts, but it’s being thrown by a Mexican family and thinking about some advice I gave [mention=3096]Elastigirl[/mention] I’ll instead wear pants like an adult

Not the dressing like an adult specifically, I’m sure you’re always lovely. I meant the advice to fit in with the local mores. I’ve never been to an event with Mexican families where the men weren’t dressed swanky.

Ah, I suppose  that makes sense. As for how I dress it's pretty much mom attire- so I guess that fits the advice

Also, I was in a PD yesterday about the site flocabulary (really great site) but one of their videos was a rap teaching kids the parts of a non fiction book...and the book was called "all about sloths." It made me think of you, ha.
