C_Q: The Quest for the Sphere of Light

The waffles are a good idea. I'm going with cliff bars for my "please no more gels or chews," fix. I hear you with something savoury too but I am going to just deal with whatever RR have at their aid stations. How often are you looking to eat? My current plan is to have something approximately every three miles and try and factor in the aid stations into that as best as I can but I'm just going to be practicing and adjusting over the next couple of long runs though.

They are quite calorie dense and are lighter to carry than an energy bar! I've honestly contemplated taking a little bag of gherkins with me on a run as I get cravings for that strong vinegar/salt taste after so much sweet stuff. I'm pretty sure that would end in nasty heartburn though!

On my training runs I've been having something approximately every 4 miles. I tried the Margarita flavour shot bloks on Sunday. They're amazing! They've got 3 times as much sodium as regular ones though, so I need to be careful if I'm taking an electrolyte drink as well. I may just use those if it's going to be a hot day.

I know I've heard about ultra runners drinking the brine that gherkins are pickled in before (aka pickle juice as the American's like to call it). I really like gherkins but I'd also worry about the whole heart burn thing. That would be quite nasty 12 miles into a 28 mile run!

I've got to do some number crunching in regards to salt intake to see what my strategy is going to be there. It's going to mean trying to take into account all of the salt in the gels, bars, shot blocks and electrolytes and leaving some head room for the aid stations.

I've heard that too, but I think they do it to help with cramp. I'd be eating them to deal with a craving. I've heard of ultra runners craving pickled onion Monster Munch, so it must be a common thing! Probably because you crave what your body lacks. I'm probably going to take some Gaviscon stick packs with me, as I do get heartburn while exercising and sometimes when I'm nervous, which I'm 100% going to be!

I have a GoPro (well, I have a cheaper Toshiba knock-off) but the battery is pretty lame. I've not taken it around many OCR's as it's a nuisance  to carry and the head/chest mounts get in the way. It might be a possible to bring it for Nuclear Fallout as there will be a few of us there that can take the camera while obstacles are climbed, if @jonfirestar and @Rhovaniel don't mind sharing camera carrying duties?

Or the other option is to join in with us! 'Nerd Fitness European OCR take over' needs to happen!!

Week 4.........ahhh whatever

angry GIF

I'm still kind of on track for this week, despite being very meh about everything. As always, I've already mentally moved onto the next challenge, especially as next challenge will be THE ONE - Man v Lakes happens mid way through the next challenge.

Running was done, albeit very painfully! My legs and feet were feeling a bit beat up so I didn't manage the full 40 minute run, but made it to 35 minutes before deciding I'd had enough.

I was going climb tonight, but I'm not feeling up for it. So I'm going to lift a little instead.

I've got a bit further into my book (after re-reading a chapter and making notes) and I've worked out some base numbers for carbs and protein for various running sessions and rest days. Long story short, I need to eat way more carbs! Even the rest days have me eating more carbs than I am right now. I've got a rough idea of how to get these into my system without resorting to inhaling a dozen Krispy Kremes, but the day before my long run is going to be an interesting one. I need to be eating roughly 400g of carbs to fuel my long run! Sunday will be my long run day so tomorrow is going to be...... interesting!

Yeah I have not got that far but my base intake should be around 500-600g and I don’t even get half of that! Gonna be interesting to figure this one out interesting though is when I roughly crunched the numbers the total calories came out to what I had figured out for myself.

Things did not go well with my training this weekend. Saturday was a rest day before my long run on Sunday and following my new nutrition guidelines, I increased my carbohydrate intake. I erred on the side of caution and didn't go as high as the recommended amount (400g), instead I finished the day at around 250g of carbs. I did this as sensibly as I could, by eating little and often and choosing healthier options (fruit, wholemeal bread and pasta). I did have one slice of cake from a bakery that we've been wanting to try for a while (it was a bit of a let down) but that was the only unhealthy option all day. I went to bed feeling a little full, but overall I felt good about my run the next day.

The good feeling ended pretty quickly. I woke up feeling bloated and sluggish. I headed out for my run at 7:30am and after about 45 minutes, I started getting stomach cramps. I pushed on, but I simply couldn't get a steady pace going as my stomach would flare up every time I did. After about 9 miles I started to worry about being far away from a toilet. I turned around, called Stu and asked him to pick me up from outside a nearby pub (which was closed because it was so early in the morning, if it had been open, I might have been able to use the facilities and carry on). So instead of a 20 mile run, I only managed around 11. Not good.

This could be a sign that I need to adjust the amount of food I eat the day before a long run, or it could just be that I got very unlucky and I ate something that didn't agree with me. I did eat dinner quite late on Saturday which may not have helped. Next challenge is going to involve a lot of experimentation with calories and carbs to see what works for me.

I'm not completely freaking out about abandoning one of my long runs this close to Man vs Lakes, but I'm not feeling great about it. Mostly I'm worried for the even longer run that I'm supposed to do this weekend, especially as it will be happening the day after an OCR! I'm in 2 minds whether doing the OCR is a good idea. I really really want to do it, but I don't want to fuck myself up for the longest run on my training plan.

Right now, my plan is to do it, but not race it as planned. I think I'm going to take it slow and steady and not push myself too hard. Then when I get home that evening, I'll foam roll and stretch the heck out of my body (maybe even have a cold bath) and get a very early night for the next day. I need to just do the distance. It doesn't matter how long it takes me - it doesn't matter if I'm out all bloody day - I just need to get it done.

I'm going to review this plan on Thursday this week as by then I will have done my hill session for the week. If on Thursday I feel like I'm not going to be able to manage a 12km OCR and a 20-22 mile run, I'm going to pull out of doing Judgement Day.

The big problem with trying to increase your carb intake by eating a ton of veg and whole grains is that you also massively increase your fibre intake which is going to have a bit of a knock on affect, especially if you aren't used to eating like that. I'm really in two minds about experimenting close to MvL although we are far enough out right now to take the chance with experimenting a little.

I couldn't believe how warm it was at 7:30. This is why summer marathons are rare! I'm hoping the fells are like Snowdon, where "the mountain makes it's own weather". It can be hot as hell on the ground but rain and fog the further up you go. And also, it's the north! :D

I did think about this, and it was one of the reasons I didn't go the whole hog and attempt 400g of carbs! I eat multigrain bread, wholewheat pasta and my 5 a day anyway, so I wasn't expecting such a minor increase to have such a drastic effect. Then again, my stomach does like to throw a hissy fit at the slightest things! I'm fairly certain that the late dinner was the main contributor, or at least it was the straw that broke the camel. I won't make that mistake again.

Thanks Lizz. Yeah, I'll adjust slightly and see how things go. I think I'll leave experimenting till after MvL now. I don't want to risk messing up my last long run and after that I'll be tapering down to half/quarter distances so I won't need as much fuel.

Hey CQ!

Sorry you had a rough training run. From what I listened to on the podcast, a lot of race nutrition is trial and error. Eating a lot of carbs sounds sensible but if you're not used to it...

I had a similar thing on Sunday. I went out in the evening with the intention of running 5k. I got 2.6miles, and whilst my legs and lungs could have carried on, my stomach couldn't. It felt like I was carrying out a large weight in there and like you said, I wanted a toilet to be close to hand. Not sure why that was, maybe heat is a contributing factor?

Also, try not to worry or stress about JD. Race it, take it easy, pull out altogether... you know your body best, and half-way through my run this weekend I was actually worried about holding you up. Just let me know which option you take before the weekend lol :D

That's exactly how I felt. I know I could have easily done the 20 miles (well, maybe not 'easily' but I would have got it done) but I just couldn't keep moving. Heat could play a part as dehydration can cause an upset stomach. Mine was definitely food related though.

Also, try not to worry or stress about JD. Race it, take it easy, pull out altogether... you know your body best, and half-way through my run this weekend I was actually worried about holding you up. Just let me know which option you take before the weekend lol

I'm still planning on doing it, I've just changed my mind about trying to run it fast. I think the weather would have put a stop to any 'fast' times anyway. Don't worry, if this changes, I'll let you know (although I'd probably still come along and spectate). I'll message you about travel soon. Might be worth heading down together as there is a parking charge.

I dropped off the radar this week. I now know for certain what caused my stomach issues on my run last Sunday. I've had the worst stomach bug all week that's kept me off my feet for most of it. I tried running mid-week but that resulted in me running back home after 10 minutes! So I've done no training this week, only resting.

The good news is, I'm starting to feel a lot better today. I should be OK to run the OCR tomorrow, albeit very slowly and I plan on doing my long run on Sunday.
