Shoe angst is so annoying! I'll try and get back to you about my thoughts on them as soon after my run as I can. Drop me a message FB or a text or something if I forget. This is good actually, it means I have an added reason to run on Monday!

Did you manage to get out on your long run on Monday? Your walk up Snowdon looked fairly epic at any rate ;)

Well, the challenge started yesterday and so far I'm at.......zero points. Not a great start! My plans for yesterday completely fell apart for various reasons. But, I promised to focus on the positive, so I'm going to talk about the trip to Wales that happened over the weekend first.

The trip didn't start off great. We got stuck in some horrendous traffic and it took nearly 7 hours to do a 4.5 hour journey. That messed up our plans to go exploring the area when we arrived, but luckily the campsite we were staying on was right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park so we only had to look out of our camping pod to see waterfalls. We took a little walk along the trail that ran alongside the camp site which was really beautiful. We had an early-ish dinner, a few beers and then hit the sack, ready to get up early and tackle the mountain in the morning.

The weather on Sunday started off really nice. It was a little overcast, but the air was really warm. This nice weather lasted for about 5 minutes of our walk and suddenly turned to high winds. We took the Rhyd Ddu path up Snowdon which takes you up the south side of the mountain. You spend a bit of time on flattish ground before you get to the foot of the mountain, then it's constant climbing from there. The winds at the foot of the mountain were bad enough - enough for me to have to duck to avoid being blown over - so we knew we were in for a tough climb. About half way up, the wind got worse and then the rain showers that had been on and off all morning suddenly turned to hail. They aren't kidding when they say the mountain makes it's own weather! At this point, a few people ahead of us had enough and turned around, which was the sensible thing to do. We, unfortunately, were not sensible.

We continued our ascent through the rain and occasional rumbles of thunder (yep, we kept going up a mountain in a thunder storm) till we got to the point where you can see the summit. Or I should say, where you can usually see the summit when it's not obstructed by fog! And this is where things got much worse! Once you got to the top of the mountain on the Rhyd Ddu path, you have to walk along a ridge to do the final ascent to the summit. Like this

It didn't look like that when we were there! It was much foggier! As you can see, this is quite exposed, so we took it really slowly, ducking down behind rocks and using our hands where possible to stop us being blown over by the wind. Once we got past the ridge and onto the final scramble to the summit, the fog had got even thicker and we could barely see 10 feet in front of us. But by that point, it seemed stupid not to do the final part and carried on up to the summit. We had planned to sit at the summit a while and grab a coffee in the cafe before heading back down, but when we got there, the cafe was closed! They can only open the cafe when the mountain train is running and I guess they couldn't run the train due to the weather. So we took a very wobbly picture - I'm amazed the phone wasn't blown out of my hand - and headed back down. The fog hadn't cleared and I admitted to Stu that I was actually a little scared and he admitted he was too! Once back at the start of a ridge, we met a group of 3 guys coming the other way. They asked us if it was worth continuing and we told them that firstly, you can't see anything from the summit and secondly the cafe was closed and so they decided to turn around and we all agreed it was safer to stay together. We stuck with them until we were all off the ridge, and then did a fast walk down the mountain. Annoyingly, the winds started to drop and the weather was much more pleasant on the way down (but we could still see the thick fog at the summit so it still would have been a difficult climb if we started later). After about 4.5 hours of walking we finally got back to the car park got in the car and headed to a cafe for a coffee and a bacon sandwich!

Nope! My legs were in no state to run yesterday. My knee and calves are still feeling a little sore today The walk took us 4.5 hours and was constant climbing in high winds. I'm not happy with myself for missing the run, but there's not much I can do about it now. I really shouldn't have planned climbing a mountain in the middle of marathon training!

good job. sometimes its the athletic challenge of it all and not the view.

your too rough on yourself.  that seems like a great way to start a challenge.  An athletic hard-core push to the top of the mountain.  how is that not a win?

Completely understandable. It may not have been a run but a hike up Snowdon is hardly a rest day either! One could argue that you got a really decent long effort aerobic workout and I dare say that there are going to be some points where we are probably just going to be walking our way up the side of a fell so you can't even claim that it wasn't race specific ;)

Not that it helps with my shoe buying woes but I'm sure I'll get over it!

I wasn't too worried about the view as it wasn't my first time up there. It was Stu's first time though, so I was disappointed for him. It just means we have to go back and do it another day!

I am being a little hard on myself I guess. Maybe I can give myself 5 bonus points for completing this walk.

You've just reminded me that I forgot to get a picture outside the Snowdon Ranger hostel! Damn, must do that next time! I threw my buff on about 2 minutes before the pics were taken. Before then my hair was sticking up everywhere from all the times I'd pulled my hood on and off!

We really need to arrange a Ranger trip to North Wales for some walking and adventures at some point. After we've done our hiking in Belgium with @Mr_Willes of course!

That thought did cross my mind. At the end of the day, it's not like I did nothing, I did 4.5 hours of exercise and covered 1085 meters of elevation! At one point we were going up a particularly steep section with the wind blowing against us and I thought 'if Man vs Lakes is this windy, I quit!'

Week 1 - Tuesday

BMF = 5 sparkles

Star Sparkle Total = 10 (adding 5 for the weekend hike)

I very nearly didn't go to BMF last night due to the weather. The rain was pouring down at lunchtime and there were a few thunderstorms too. If it had continued into the evening I might not have gone, but it stopped raining and I couldn't use 'it'll be really muddy' as a valid excuse not to go! It actually turned out not to be very muddy, just very wet. It was a leg heavy session which my legs weren't happy with - especially when we started doing pistol squats!

I didn't manage to prep a lunch for yesterday so I had to buy food from M&S. I picked a salad and roasted chicken legs, so it was a healthy choice at least. I took a trip to the supermarket after BMF and picked up stuff to prep lunch for the rest of my office based days this week, which is only 2 more days.

Yeah, there was just no way I was going to be able to get to Surry this weekend. I really want fix that next year some time but I've got a couple of really major purchases to get done before I can even think about getting another car.

I get how hard it is being a one car household. I'm still not sure if I can get to Spartan Windsor in October as Stu is away that weekend. He can borrow cars through work as he works for a car leasing company, but it's not always guaranteed. I don't want to pay out for a race I might not be able to get to!

If it had been that bad, I wouldn't have gone. Not because I don't like training in the rain, more that I'd have to then do the journey home on the train while soaking wet and probably covered in mud!

We were driving on the M6 when the torrential rain that caused all the flooding hit. The wipers couldn't clear the windows even on the fastest setting and we had to crawl along at 15mph with hazard lights on because you couldn't see 10 feet in front of the car. I'm so glad Stu was driving, it was unbelievably scary.

I get how hard it is being a one car household. I'm still not sure if I can get to Spartan Windsor in October as Stu is away that weekend. He can borrow cars through work as he works for a car leasing company, but it's not always guaranteed. I don't want to pay out for a race I might not be able to get to!

Yeah that's actually pretty much the reason why I've not signed up to any of the Maverick Races this year. I just can't guarantee I can get out to them. Also wanting a second car just because 'it'll make getting to races easier' just seems like a terrible reason. I really just don't need it day to day. The Windsor Spartan is one of the races I have no worries about getting to at all. I don't want to put her on the spot by tagging her (or suggest that I'm volunteering her) but you know that Rho is going?

If it had been that bad, I wouldn't have gone. Not because I don't like training in the rain, more that I'd have to then do the journey home on the train while soaking wet and probably covered in mud!

It's not the rain so much as the lightning that would worry me.

Maybe you could get a motorbike instead! :D

I'm not sure what BMF do in that situation. They say they don't cancel classes because of the weather, but if it's a safety risk I'm sure they'd have no choice.

I have thought about that but when you factor in that the overriding motivation for it really is just to make it easier to do races a motorbike doesn't help all that much with things like RRDW ;)

Yeah there is a real difference between it being cold, wet and uncomfortable and actually dangerous to be out.
