iatetheyeti: growl and go i

Recommended Posts

The words 'growl and go' were reportedly one of Shackleton's favoured expressions, and whether or not this is true, I've come to love the phrase. Do the whining, then do the thing anyway. Suits me down to the ground, and believe me, over the coming months I'm going to have some amount of growling to do.

But I'll go.

I know not where this journey ends but I damn well know where I need to start.

Time to growl and go.

i.

It doesn't matter how much I plan and train and attempt to adapt, if I don't fuel myself properly then I will never make progress. I will always be hindered by weakness and exhaustion. It isn't a matter of motivation, not anymore. It's a case of putting my nose to the grindstone, embracing the suck, and doing what needs to be done.

And that's to eat right.

That is the only focus of this challenge.

One:  The Ingredients

Meat (beef, poultry, pork), veg, fruit, eggs, seeds, nuts. To a lesser extent pasta and rice (until what I have runs out, then will begin a trail run to see whether I do better with or without the extra source of carbs), coffee, soy milk, and any assorted pills and powders (by which I mean things like protein shakes and vitamins).

***If it is perishable and in my home then I will eat it, even if it is not on that list. What I will not do is replace it afterwards.***

That's it. More than enough to have a healthy, varied diet.

...I do suspect I will be miserable for the majority of this challenge as I'm going cold turkey on everything else. Chocolate, sweets, assorted junk, fruit juice, even Irn Bru.

But I will not deviate from this list.

(though I do take suggestions and constructive criticism)

(any deviation will be met with a great many burpees)

Two: Planning

Without a firm plan I will not make it through. Five weeks (ish, considering we're already about halfway through zero week), five plans. Shopping lists (more guidance than anything else, considering some of the random things that can be found in the reduced section), what meals I make, how much I eat per day. All of this will be planned in advance to ensure I don't burn valuable willpower on avoiding bad decisions.

(failure to plan will be met with a great many burpees)

Three: Proof

Saying I'll post consistent photographic proof of what I'm eating is a pretty good way to help keep myself accountable, as is detailing my plans here. If I don't do it, by all means give me hell. I need to whip myself into shape and I'm going to struggle to do it alone.

(not providing said proof will result in a great many burpees)

And there we have it. A simple plan, and it needs to be if I'm to have any chance of success. All I have to do is keep going, build up some momentum, create better habits, and that will be that. In theory. I will be running, doing bodyweight workouts, and doing mobility work, but that is far from my main focus right now. Getting my eating habits sorted takes priority. I can figure out calories and the like later, right now I need to make sure I'm eating the right stuff.

I love that attitude! That is exactly what is needed to see things through and make real progress!

I also love the simplicity of the challenge. One goal to rule them all! I really encourage self experimentation. It's easy to get bogged down with what other people think you should do but finding out what works for you is most important.

Ready to whip you into shape, Yeti! we expect photos, that plan of yours and for you to stick to that pan!

Nothing to do with the food, but one thing comes to mind. It might be in the realms of far, far too cruel or it might be something that helps keep you on track and that would be proof of burpees :pirate:

Although in all sincerity, I'd much rather never see you do another burpee ever again (or you see me do another burpee for that matter) so you are going to stick to your challenge, right? You can growl about it all you like so long as you keep going.

I've been putting this off for far too long, and I figure that I know I have to get it going, so why not use that fire that RRDW lit to give me a good push towards actually making progress? By the end of this I'm hoping to have a better understanding of how I need to fuel myself.

I like burpees because of what they do to me (improve stamina and core strength), but I don't like actually like doing them. We did well over 100 burpees at BMF tonight. Not fun!

Zero Week - Thursday

Well, I did mean to post this yesterday, but my computer decided it wanted to update and take forever about it. So here we are today. We're already off to a not so fantastic start because my body has decided now is a great time to be ill, but I'm in the process of denying that it's happening in the hope that it'll go away, so we'll see how that goes...

Though there may not be much left of today, I do have a list:

  • Do a damned big load of dishes
  • Unearth the floor in the living room (I started trying to reorganise things whilst the computer was updating yesterday and got distracted and now I have no floor)
  • Go for a walk
  • Catch up on here
  • Do some yoga
  • Refill water bottles and store them in the fridge
  • Water the plants
  • Cook something half decent for dinner
  • Concoct plan for tomorrow

I think it's all doable. Admittedly for the rest of this week my focus will swing heavily towards getting my flat in a presentable order as I have an inspection on Monday (that I got notified of yesterday. So much for the whole 'must be notified at least one week in advance' thing...). Thankfully I have Saturday off and I'm only doing a five hour open on Sunday, which means I will have plenty of time to make things ship shape. And once that source of stress has passed, things will get a tiny bit easier.

As far as tomorrow's plan goes:

I'm working a 12-8. I will be getting a bus around 11am. Therefore I will get up at 7am and go for a short run. Once that is done, I will check in here no later than 8:30am (if I don't make an appearance, feel free to start the prodding and/or kicking. Sometime before I go to work I will consume a meal. I'm not great at eating solid food before going to work, and it usually ends with me going far longer than is healthy without actually eating anything. When I get back from work, around 9pm, I will eat something, check in here, and then be in bed no later than 11pm. Regular sleeping patterns really need to be a thing in my life...

Well, I'm here....

==========

I am here and deeply unhappy about it. Got maybe an hour or two of sleep thanks to a decidedly unpleasant flare up of the same kind of leg pain I had a few years back. But. Still went for my short run and now the pain is 90% gone, so we'll see what happens for the rest of today. It does alter my plans for tomorrow slightly. I will be spending a little longer in bed! Proper update to follow after I've got back from work.

Appreciate it guys, though to be perfectly honest, after the day I've just had, I actually wish the pain had stuck around instead... We are now in that kind of full crisis mode that tends to come about at least once a year. Full update will come tomorrow, right now I just want to go to sleep and try to forget this shitshow ever happened, just for a little while.

Zero Week - Saturday

Right. So. Things are not quite going as planned. Fortunately today I'm in a far better mindset and better able to concoct a plan to deal with it all. Yesterday I was running on next to no sleep, work and personal stress, too long in the sun, and not much in the way of food or water. So there were emotions, most of which were angry ones.

Basically what's happened is that my bank card has stopped working. I found this out trying to take money out of a cash machine in order to buy a bus ticket to get to work (because am I hell cycling in twenty degree heat). Didn't work. Now, that cash machine breaks down fairly regularly, so I went inside (it's attached to a Tesco) to pick up a drink and get some cash back. And it didn't work. Machine said there was no chip, which was funny, because both myself and the cashier could see the undamaged chip exactly where it should be. So, peeved, I made my way back to my flat whilst trying to get hold of a manager at work. I figured if I had to walk in such high heat, I was damn well changing into shorts first. Except when I finally got hold of the Overlord and explained the situation, he sent Cod to come and pick me up.

I did try calling the bank helpline during my break, but I was on hold forever, and I was tired, stressed, and pissed off so I ended up hanging up.

After work I was able to get a bus home by clearing out the small change in my locker (an excess of 1p and 2p coins...). This morning I considered phoning the helpline again, but the fact that I had barely any money drove me to spend said money on a bus into Edinburgh in the hope that I'd be able to get some cash from the bank itself as well as getting a new card sent out. When I got there, they told me that their system didn't show a problem, but after a few tests it became very clear it was not just my card being anti-Tesco and that there was actually something wrong. And that's where problem number two comes in. Because my card was due to expire next month anyway, the system wouldn't let them order me a new card. At best, this means I'll have a new card around the 30th/31st. At worst, and this is apparently the most likely scenario, a new card will be sent out at the end of May and I'll get it somewhere around June 7th/8th.

I have £20 in actual cash.

It's not the worst spot I've ever been in, but it's not exactly what I was hoping for right now, you know?

I've got a rough idea of how to deal with this, but it needs some work. I'm going to de-stress and come back later tonight to update.

That's ridiculous. In the states they'd just issue a new card with the expiration date adjusted accordingly. It's ridiculous they are making you wait.

Unfortunately there's pretty much nothing I can do to avoid some kind of wait. It takes a few days for the card to arrive anyway, and nothing is getting done until Monday at the least. I guess if it doesn't come by the end of the week I can go back in, but there's not really anything I can do to speed the process up, unfortunately.

That is completely kooky. Can you withdraw cash from your bank account if you go to the branch in person? If you have money in your account, it seems like it would be good to carry some extra cash until this gets resolved.

I'm sorry that was so stressful!

As far as the nighttime leg pain, do you know the cause?

That really sucks. I don't know if this'll help but something similar happened to me a few months back (they cancelled the card without ever telling me and there was a great debacle getting the replacement) but while the card wasn't working I was still able to access the website and banking app to move money around until i got the replacement
