RogueLibrarian: Assassin Training Camp

Recommended Posts

Nothing Is True, so we must find our own path to success.

Everything Is Permitted, so we are responsible for our own actions and their consequences.

Hoods are Hot as Balls, and I live in Georgia, so this challenge will not be conducted wearing traditional Assassin robes.

If you’re just tuning in: I’m in my 40s, librarian and sometimes writer, a little bit obsessed with rogue/thief/assassin characters.

Assassin’s Creed is not only my favorite game series, but it’s become surprisingly inspirational to my fitness journey. The fact that NF has an Assassin path probably has a lot to do with why I got interested and stuck around at the beginning. And of course, the Assassin forum has become my Brotherhood. Um, Siblinghood.

BODY

Assassins-Creed-IV-Edward-Kenway-on-a-Wh

Assassins have to be able to run, climb, fight, infiltrate, escape. The Assassin’s main weapon is his body, so here’s the workout plan.

Four days per week. The routine I’m shooting for this month: One day of climbing, one day of yoga (I need to work on my flexibility), one day of strength (usually TRX), one day of kickboxing. Substitutions permitted as necessity dictates. I’m running the Pride 5K in mid-June and that will definitely count as a workout! My knees are kind of for shit and I want to look good in a tank top so I’m doing more upper body, arms, and core lately.

I have a work gym, a kickboxing gym and a backyard gym, so I have no excuses for not keeping to this one. I haven’t yet found a yoga class at the work gym that works with my summer schedule, but I can do some solo stretches at least.

MIND

Image result for assassin's creed eagle vision

Maintain clear vision. Keep synchronized. Stay on task. Here’s how we do that this month.

I’m gearing up for a conference presentation (boss fight) on June 8, so every weekday I’ll spend an hour on that. After that, I’ll switch this one to a writing goal to be named later.

Meditate every day (I’m not tracking the numbers on this one, just mentioning it in case anyone wants to talk about it). Lately I'm using Calm, but I'm mostly doing 5-minute silent meditations.

DIET

240x170xsalad-club-geeksdreamgirl.png.pa

Make a couple of salads per week. Enough said.

We will continue to strive toward a Platonic ideal definition of "salad," but we begin with the premise that it's mostly green.

OPTIONAL OBJECTIVES

  • Try a new class: aerial silks or karate
  • Add a new thing to the backyard gym
  • Do a workout with simulated weapons
  • Longer meditations
  • ...?

SCORECARD

  • Workouts: (X/4)
  • Presentation prep: (X/5)
  • Salad Club: (X/2)

That gets my vote too! :D Because you know what builds gunz and abz? Yeah that's right, silks.

Thanks guys! Ms Rogue has taken them before, for a few months a while back, and she says if I want to try it she'll probably go back with me. She also keeps telling me it's an intense core workout and likes to reference this scene from Always Sunny.

tumblr_owqkcaO1hM1wrraimo5_400.gif

They don't have regular classes this weekend because of Memorial Day, but I'll look at silks next week.

Non-fitness victory: Today I had to make a difficult/stressful phone call, so I just DID IT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING before I'd even had my first cup of coffee and now it's done.

Today's plan: Mid-morning meditation break, work on presentation for an hour before lunch, gym break after lunch. More aching muscles than usual this week. Maybe I will try a yoga sesh today? Anyone got a recommendation for a solo novice yoga workout?

It is pouring down rain. (I was grouchy about my damp feet until I rode up in an elevator with a guy who had biked in and was drenched head to foot.) I really wanted to take a mental health sick day, but I took last Friday off to hang with my friend from out of town and I got shit to do today.

Afternoon check-in:

Meditated

Worked an hour on the presentation (at least once started to type "assass-" instead of "assessment")

Did the yoga for climbers video below. @raptron, thanks for the recommendation! At the time I didn't think it was too strenuous, but I can feel it in my arms now that I'm sitting down at my desk again. But I could totally do that on my own a couple of days a week at home, and it would probably be a good way to stretch me out on recovery days.

Did not remember that yoga is often a balance challenge. My balance needs work.

Deciding whether to stop at the store tonight or tomorrow. Meal planning is kind of tiring sometimes, guys.

So: I took a dose of anti-anxiety medicine to help get through working on the presentation today, and I've been mildly dizzy and sleepy for the last four hours. This doesn't usually happen.

However, discipline being greater than motivation, I went to the gym anyway and did a suspension routine. (I forgot my kickboxing gloves.) Tomorrow's a rest day and Saturday is exercise party (h/t @karinajean).

I had veg sushi and a fat-free yogurt for lunch today, a pear as a post-gym snack, and made roasted vegetables last night. I am wearing my skinny pants.

Oops. But hey you made it to the gym, that's a big win considering!

I feel pretty good about doing it, and it did help me shake off the cobwebs. So, half dose next time.

Today's a rest day. My KB gym is closed for memorial day weekend, but they're having a special Crossfit workout tomorrow morning that I'm going to go to (Ms Rogue opts out of anything Crossfit-related, but I'm game to try it).

Ordinarily on a rest day with a light work schedule I'd think about going for a walk around downtown after lunch, but it's likely to thunderstorm all day, so probably not. My plan for the long weekend was to put up another monkey bar on Sunday and do a bars workout on Monday, but right now the prediction is rain for the next week or so.

Next weekend I plan to go pick up some fabric and start working on cosplay projects. It's already so hot and humid at the end of May that I hate to think what Labor Day weekend is going to be like in Jedi robes and Assassin's coats.

oh god that was a lot

Started with a mile/mile and a half run, and then  we started with the pull-ups, push-ups and squats. The gym managers knew I was the only (?) kickboxer venturing over to the Crossfit side, so it was funny how they kept checking on me. "You can do ring rows instead of pull-ups if you want" (oh yes I did). Etc.

Making pizza and a big-ass salad tonight, and picking up stuff for broccoli & noodles tomorrow.

Running first? Definitely sadists.

I was both insulted and reassured by the fact that all three of the trainers checked in on me at various points. "Yeah *pant* just *pant* takin' a minute *pant* something something water break"

Yesterday I did a Yoga With Adriene stretch (thanks @Mad Hatter). I also put up a third monkey bar so I think I officially have a set now. Today it was supposed to rain all day, but it seems to have stopped temporarily and it's kind of lovely and cool at the moment, so I'm going to head out to the back yard shortly and do a monkey bars workout. I'll be experimenting based on this (https://redefiningstrength.com/monkey-bar-exercises-fun-9-moves/) and some other online articles to figure out a regular routine.

Then shower, meditation and grocery store. Broccoli sesame noodles and salad tonight. Roasted vegetables in the fridge for tomorrow's lunch.

I know it's the last thing you want to think of while way from it, but - please let me know about your presentation pleeeeeeeeeeeease!!

My favorite medication app is Insight timer. Lots of good guided meditations, music, singing bowls, etc. Really easily searchable.

I also just like the idea of a Rogue Librarian, because they'll make any excuse for a costume party.
