Anyone had a torn ligament in the foot? Any good exercises that avoid aggravating it?

Recommended Posts

Last New Years, as I was watching the fireworks, leaning against Beaumaris castle, thinking about exploding objects at high velocity, I developed a sudden pain in my foot. I assumed someone had stepped on it, and ignored it.

I didn't know it then, but the past 7 months has been hampered by that moment.

Now my left foot will swell up after any sufficiently intense run or collisions into the bit to the side of the 'knuckle' of my big toe. After initial fears it was gout, and an x-ray incase it was a bone spur of some kind, my doctor has told me what it is...

A torn ligament at the base of the toe. Lovely.

Right. So, what that means is, I gotta take it easy on the foot whenever it swells up, and that's a big problem for me- 90% of all my exercise is running, and only recently have I changed to rowing and crosstrainer machine-eryness.

But I'm not sure what else to swap out for.

Anyone got any good exercises that don't involve me slapping my footmeats against the ground at high speed?

Yikes. Well, in this kind of case, the best option is usually to go to the professionals: talk to your doctor about what treatment plan they recommend (eg. rest, rehab, surgery, PRP injections, etc) - and find a physio with a decent fitness background and experience with connective tissue injuries to help you put together a program.

Failing that, rowing & stationary/airdyne bike are potential options, as well as the obvious options within the weightlifting spectrum. You may also enjoy looking at something with gymnastics rings, which should limit foot contact.

...but I'm adorable! Ask anyone who doesn't know me...
